ROUTE SKETCHING 95with practice this method may become pretty ac^curate. On level open country a height can be measuredby shadow. Set up vertically a stick of knownlength; measure the length of its shadow, and thatof the object whose height is required. As thelength of stick's shadow is to stick's length, so is thaiof the object's shadow to the object's height. Forexample: the stick is 5 feet long and its shadow 7,while the shadow of the t^ee is 70 feet; then7;5::7o:x, and x—50 feet.Fig.D22.—Extemporized LevelTo measure a depth with the watch: square thenumber of seconds a stone takes to reach the bottom, and multiply by 16: the result is the depth in feet.Leveling.—^Take a short straight stick or ruler,A B m Fig. 22, mark it exactly in the middle, andsuspend it with a string with loop at C directly overthe middle of the stick, from which latter a littleweight D is suspended to keep the wind from shakingthe level.
