268 CAMPING AND WOODCRAFTto go, and can only carry the hide and the choiceiparts of the meat, the best way is to make up anIndian pack, as shown in Fig. 114. Skin the deer, place a stick athwart the inside of the skin, packFig. 114 — Indian Deer Packthe saddles, hams, and tid-bits in the latter, androll up and tie in a convenient bundle.Hanging to Butcher.— It is not necessary tohang a deer up to skin and butcher it ; but that isthe more cleanly way. One man, unassisted, canhang a pretty heavy animal in the following way:Drag it headforemost to a sapling that is just limberenough to bend near the ground when you climbit. Cut three poles, ten or twelve feet long, withcrotches near the ends. Climb the sapling and trimoff the top, leaving the stub of one stout branchnear the top. Tie your belt, or a stout withe orflexible root, into a loop around the deer's antlersor throat. Bend the sapling down until you canslip the loop over the end of the sapling. Thelatter, acting as a spring-pole, will lift part of thedeer's weight. Then place the crotches of the polesunder the fork of the sapling, butts of poles radiatingoutward, thus forming a tripod. First pushon one pole, then on another, and so raise the carcassfree from the ground. If you do not intendto butcher it immediately, raise it up out of reachgf roving dogs and " varmints."
