It Is full of resinous oil, blazes up at once,will burn in any wind, <strong>and</strong> wet sticks can be ignitedwith it.Tinder, <strong>and</strong> methods of getting fire withoutmatches, will be considered in Volume II.Making Fire in the Wet.— It is a good testof one's resourcefulness to make a fire out-of-doorsin rainy weather. The best way to go about it dependsupon local conditions. If fat pine can befound the trick is easy: just split it up, <strong>and</strong> startyour fire under a big fallen log. Dry fuel <strong>and</strong> aplace to build the fire can often be found under biguptilted logs, shelving rocks, <strong>and</strong> similar naturalsiiclters, or in the core of an old stump. In defaultof these,look for a dead softwood tree that leans tothe south. The wood <strong>and</strong> bark on the under sidewill be dry — chop some off, split it fine, <strong>and</strong> buildyour fire under the shelter of the trunk.Lighting a Match.— When there is nothingdry to strike it on, jerk the tip of the match forwardagainst your teeth.To light a match in the wind, face the wind.Cup your h<strong>and</strong>s, with their backs toward the wind,<strong>and</strong> hold the match with its head pointing towardthe rear of the cup — i. e., toward the wind. Removethe right h<strong>and</strong> just long enough to strike thematch on something very close by; then instantlyresume the former position. The flame will runup the match stick, instead of being blown away fromit, <strong>and</strong> so will have something to feed on.Fire Regulations.— On state l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> onNational forest reserves it is forbidden to use anybut fallen timber for firewood. Different Stateshave various other restrictions, some, I believe, notpermitting campers to light a fire in the woods afall unless ac<strong>com</strong>panied by a registered guide.In New York the regulations prescribe that" Fires will be permitted for the purpose of cooking,warmth, <strong>and</strong> insect smudges; but before such firesare kindled sufficient snace around the spot where
