Electra has been primarily a cruiser bicycle company based insouthern California. Electra was founded in the early 1990sby two Germans, Jeano Erforth and Benno Baenziger. <strong>The</strong>irbikes are very hip and fashionable, inspired by the California lifestyle.hot-rod car and chopper motorcycle styles. Electra bikes have hipnames like Rat Rod, Tiki, Straight 8, Suzy Q, Revil and Rally Sport.<strong>The</strong> “Rat Fink” pays homage to the late hot-rod designer and artist BigDaddy Ed Roth.<strong>The</strong> Townie features their trademarked, “Flat Footed Technology"which describes the lower seat so riders can have their feet flaton the ground at a stop. "By mising the comfortable laid-back seatingposition of the odd, but fast recumbent with our smart and swoopycruisers, we created the next generation of bikes, the Townies."After renting a Townie in Cannon Beach, OR at Mikeʼs Bikes duringSpring break, I immediately came home and contacted Electra tosee about getting a test bike or two. Electra was more than accommodatingand we ordered three bikes: a standard 24-speed (Amyʼs testmodel), a matte flat black Nexus 7-speed with coaster brake (for me)and a ladies Nexus 8-speed in pearl white with a step-through framefor my wife. Within one week, son Daniel had commandeered the 7-speed as his own.One perk of being the publisher of RCN is that we have lots ofbikes around. My family has access to many weird and wonderfulbikes. Some are very popular and get ridden a lot, and others donʼt.In the case of the Townies, they have been extremely popular. <strong>The</strong>ycommand more attention around town than almost any other bike (thisside of a recumbent trike). While many of our casual rider friends andneighbors feel recumbents are a bit over-the-top, we could have soldthe Townies several times over.<strong>The</strong> finish quality of the Townie frames is impeccable. <strong>The</strong> welding,paint and finish work is probably done by robots in Taiwan, but itʼs onpar with the best of what we see here — and superior to other low-endrecumbents. Electra builds these bikes on such a huge scale (comparedto recumbents) that many parts are specially designed for each Towniemodel. <strong>The</strong> white and blue Townies had brushed-alloy finish on thebars and seat post, while the matte black 7-speed had flat black finishon the bars, seat post, crank etc. <strong>The</strong> bikes are real lookers — each onein its own right. <strong>The</strong> Townie has the most user-friendly, balanced allarounddesign, geometry and value of any crank forward bike. <strong>The</strong>yjust seem to have done it right.Weʼve had very little trouble with any of the Electras over the pastseveral months. <strong>The</strong> bottom bracket (non-sealed) on the Nexus 8bike came loose and had to be tightened. I adjusted the brakes on the24-speed, and had to tighten the Nexus hub linkage on both the 7- and8- speed. <strong>The</strong> wheels needed more attention that usual when the bikeswere assembled, so be sure your selling dealer checks them.According to Electra, the 24-speed is their best seller at $470.Iʼve ridden the 1- and 3-speed models which are incredible valuesat around $300. Our 7-speed was $570 and the 8-speed was $700— which explains why the 24-speed is the most popular. <strong>The</strong> Nexusbikes donʼt quite have a low enough low gear. Daniel and Marilynneed to plan their routes a bit better (no really steep hills). We planto reduce the size of the chainring on the 8-speed this fall. Due to thegearing limitations, most RCN readers will be interested in the Townie24-speed, which is the bike that Amy reviewed in this issue.TOWNIE VS. FUSIONFrame Geometry: While the more enthusiast-oriented <strong>RANS</strong><strong>Fusion</strong> is lighter and quicker, it is more recumbent than the Townie,which is more of a cruiser bicycle. This difference is immediatelyPondering the TownieBy Bob Bryantdetectable in the recline of the seat tube angle and the seat. Riders arein a more laid-back position on the <strong>Fusion</strong>. Being more laid back ona crank-forward bike doesnʼt always mean more comfortable. <strong>The</strong><strong>RANS</strong> position is more aggressive and the seat is farther away fromthe handlebars, and the handlebars are lower (even with the talleststem).Seats: <strong>The</strong> Townie seat has more padding than the <strong>RANS</strong>, and thehandlebars are taller (more comfy and a bit less performance). Findingthe perfect adjustment on a CF will take just a minute. While I stillprefer the <strong>RANS</strong> <strong>Fusion</strong>, but after riding both bikes, Amy and Marilynpreferred the high bars, more seat foam, and slightly less recumbentposition (more upright seat tube) of the Townie.<strong>The</strong> difference between the <strong>Fusion</strong> and the Townie comes down tohow you will use the bike. If youʼre a casual rider, riding recreationallyor around town or if youʼre on a budget, the Townie is THE bike.If youʼre looking for a lighter and faster crank-forward bike — themore enthusiast <strong>Fusion</strong> is the ticket.CRANK FORWARD COMFORTRecumbent critic that I am, I found the Townieʼs seat less comfythan our reviewers. Itʼs a lightweight seat designed by Electra forthe Townie. I thought the base could be larger and I didnʼt care forthe high center ridge down the center of the seat. Nobody else evennoticed this. Luckily, cruiser seats are readily available at your localbike shop or on the Internet, are relatively cheap and can be mountedin a few minutes. In contrast, the <strong>RANS</strong> <strong>Fusion</strong> seat is wider andflexes, but has minimal foam — which was a negative for some of ourreviewers.With their lower seats and semi-recumbent position, the crankforwardbikes eliminate all the neck and wrist pain that come withtraditional upright cycling. <strong>The</strong> wider cushier saddles eliminate muchof the bottom pain. However, these bikes add distance between theseat and handlebars (more with the <strong>Fusion</strong> than Townie). With thelack of recumbent back support, some riders feel minor lower backpain, and some donʼt (more so on the <strong>Fusion</strong> with the more reclinedseat tube and lower handlebars). Cycling isn't usually 100% pain-free,so you have to make some compromises. According to <strong>RANS</strong>, thisdiscomfort can go away once you build up your tummy muscles more,it depends on the person.Some feel that this Townie-like comfort bike may eventually takeover the entire comfort bike genre, which commands 15% of thebicycle market — this could mean sales in the millions of units.Recumbency has never seen anything close to these sales numbers.So can we afford to ingnore this new half-bent style of bike?My hat is off to the folks from Electra. <strong>The</strong> Townie is a brilliantdesign and is certain to be very popular. Itʼs not just a poser bike, butweʼve proven that it can be a viable transportation, and a stylish one atthat. <strong>The</strong>y've become excellent sellers and many, builders are followingsuit with similar bikes.
