Events included men’s andwomen’s doubles, mixed doubles, and a junior tournamentfor players 18 and under. It’s as <strong>Easy</strong> as Pie” fundraiser whichis scheduled for November 15-22 at all<strong>Lubbock</strong> United Supermarkets. Unitedcustomers and other <strong>Meals</strong> on <strong>Wheels</strong>’supporters are encouraged to donate atleast five dollars to receive a coupon fora free fresh-baked 8 inch apple or pumpkin pie from United’s in-storebakeries. Donations may be given to the volunteers stationed at the stores’entrances, the check outs, the customer service counter, or at the <strong>Meals</strong>on <strong>Wheels</strong>’ office. The coupons are redeemable at any <strong>Lubbock</strong> UnitedSupermarkets through December 31, 2008. All proceeds benefit <strong>Lubbock</strong><strong>Meals</strong> on <strong>Wheels</strong>. The event kicks-off with a celebrity pie eating conteston Friday, November 14th, at the United Supermarkets Amigos locationat 112 N. University. Thanks to United Supermarkets, KAMC ABC 28,and KLBK CBS 13 for their generous contributions to this event. Manyvolunteers are needed throughout the week to collect donations and handout pie coupons at the nine area United Supermarkets. During thecold winter months, many more people find themselvesin need of our services so the number of volunteersneeded to deliver all of the meals increases. A one-hourorientation is required. All of the routes are within thecity limits, have between 8 and 12 stops, and averageabout 12 miles. It only takes about one hour to delivera route, and you can go as often as you choose. If youare unable to become a volunteer, you can still help bypassing along this information to your friends, family,civic club, Sunday school class, mission group, or otherorganization to help us recruit new volunteers!A special opportunity available for businesses isour Corporate Volunteer Program.Local businesses are encouraged to participate by allowingemployees to deliver meals during their lunchhour. This allows employers to be civic minded withoutexcessive loss of staff time. And a Partridge in a Pear TreeFor the eleventh consecutive year, planning is underwayfor the Twelve Days of Christmas Project. Thanks tothe efforts of many area schools, churches, civic groups,and local businesses, a variety of holiday items are distributedto the <strong>Meals</strong> on <strong>Wheels</strong>’ recipients on each ofthe twelve business days prior to the Christmas holiday.Some of the twelve days’ gifts will include calendars, freshfruit, puzzles, and homemade treats. These special giftswill bring cheer to those who cannot leave their homes toenjoy colorful holiday lights or attend seasonal celebrations.Each day beginning December 8th, <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong>on <strong>Wheels</strong>’ volunteers will deliver the items along withthe regular meal delivery. As usual, this spectacular event will include thirtyfivefood booths (with selections from your favorite local restaurants), live jazzmusic by the Shinn/Turner Dixieland Band, a large silent auction (with itemsfrom various local merchants), a King and Queen in full regal attire, cash bars,plus a large children’s area with a variety of activities and games. Colorful masksand beads will be available to make the evening even more festive. Everyone willalso enjoy entertainment provided by face painters, clowns, magicians, jugglers,and flamboyant decorations in the official colors of purple, green, and gold.The Market Area will feature a variety of items available for purchase such asbeignet mix, , hurricane mix, jewelry, fragrances, body glitter, temporary tattoos, andpet items. Tickets will be available after the first of the year and are $25 foradults, $10 for children under 12 and can be purchased in advance at <strong>Lubbock</strong><strong>Meals</strong> on <strong>Wheels</strong>, any Select-A-Seat location (service charge applies)or for $30 at the door. Thiscommunity service program will bring holidaycheer and gift giving to over 300 senior citizenswho have little or no family with whom to celebratethe holidays or are least likely to receivea present during the holiday season. Individuals,groups, and families are invited to Sponsora Senior. The main Christmas tree will beset up at K-mart Super Center November 13through December 10, decorated with ornamentslisting the first names of needy seniorsand their wishlist of inexpensive items. Laterin the month trees will go up in some SeniorCare Communities - Ventura Place, QuailRidge Alzheimer’s Special Care Center,and Cottage Village, City Bank (82nd &Frankford location). Items frequently requestedare socks, blankets, slippers, and personalcare items. Each donated item will begift-bagged in a holiday sack at our communitywide gift wrapping party, Thursday December11 from 3-6:00p.m. at the LakeridgeUnited Methodist Church, located at 4701-82nd Street. Volunteers will also be needed todeliver the gifts to the homes of these deservingseniors.
