Nalco will invest aroundRs7000 crore in the alumina refinery and its miningoperations.Business Standard, 11.07.09Aluminium prices gain 19% oninfrastructure spendThe economic stimulus packages announced by variouscountries with a thrust on infrastructure spending seem tohave boosted aluminium prices, which posted a quarterlygain for the first time in the last four quarters. However, the huge stockpiles in the London Metal Exchange(LME) may cap any possibility of sharp spike in prices.Aluminium prices have jumped 19.47 per cent in the secondquarter this year to $1,663 a tonne from $1,392 a tonne inthe first quarter. However, the gain was minuscule comparedwith the price of $3,136-$3,114 that prevailed betweenApril and June 2008.Besides the stimulus packages, the large inventory build-upby China boosted aluminium prices. The Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) accumulated8,82,600 tonnes in the second quarter, resulting in occasionaldeclines in LME monitored stockpiles. The companies that will benefit from the rise in aluminiumprices include the Government-owned National AluminiumCompany and Vedanta Group companies, BharatAluminium Company and Madras Aluminium Company. With the raw material cost declining substantially, theIndian companies are set to post a good performance in thesecond quarter. The average three-month forward price difference in theLME and the SHFE surged to $362 a tonne in May-June,with Shanghai being quoted at a premium. The Good Old Days(Here is a piece of my invaluable experience in Mines. It willbe of great interest to people around us).One day we were in the return Bus from Mines. As usual theenvironment in bus was hilarious. Somebody raised a pointabout type of engines. i.e internal combustion, diesel or petroletc. I suggested coal engines in bus. Entire bus roared intolaughter. I tried to remember coal automotive engines havingread somewhere. I continued to argue that it was there before2nd world war. Some how, I could get one reluctant believer,Mr. Shankar a friend in need at that time inside the bus.Next day in the return bus he revealed the real story of buses.Immediately after reaching the house he had sent an email tohis learned elder brother, who was kind enough to dispel thedoubts with a prompt answer. Here are the e-mails.Respected Anna,Namaste. All are doing well. My colleagues were not believingthe existence of steam bus. They say buses started with ICengines only. My friends have agreed to believe your reply.Hence please give details of STEAM BUS. I remember U sayingabout steam buses of Chatrapur. A cleaner was appointed inOrissa for cleaning the coals from the bus. Pl. give details.Dear Sankar,I am happy to tell you the history of Bus!There is a slight gap in communication or understanding aboutthe buses that were run during Second World War &subsequently for some more time. Those buses were run bycoal gas generated by heating charcoal in the bus itself. Ourfather was at Sambalpur & it was very interesting to know thatthese buses start at 6am at Meramandali & reach only at 6pmin the evening at Sambalpur. The cleaner was to feed the boilerlike heater to generate coal gas, in the middle of the bus wherethe cleaner continuously feeds charcoal & blows a hand bloweragainst driver’s shower of abuses (Gali .. ) to speed up!!Even similar buses were run in between Berhampur &Chatrapur. Grandmother used to buy charcoal from thosecleaners. They were selling smaller sized ones in the name ofdust. (This was his income). Now it is obsolete in view ofavailability of natural gas in plenty. It is used in an internalcombustion engine only but fuel was coal gas generated onthe bus while in motion. If you need I can get more detailsMay - July’ 09Readers WritePARICHAYAlike the filters used before the gas is fed into engine. It wasnightmare for any body to travel by night in those buses. Bye- Anna(It has been quite long since I left Mines and has joinedSmelter at Angul.
