S t. Mary’s LeadersA Message from the PresidentDear Family of Mary,St. Mary’s High School is a tremendous sign of God’s love at work in theworld. Our dedicated faculty and staff are a tremendous model of what BlessedChaminade first envisioned when he sought to re-Christianize all of his nativeFrance:The object of the vow of teaching (is) to carry out the recommendation ofMary, “Do whatever he tells you,” it extends to all classes of society…butespecially to the young and the poor, and in this it really distinguishes us fromall others who make this vow.”Our faculty and staff have fully embraced this Marianist mission. Many ofour teachers have completed their formation and taken their own vows ascommitted Lay Marianists; others have traveled to Dayton or San Antonio to deepen their knowledgeand commitment to be Marianist educators. Anyone who spends more than a moment in our communitycomes to recognize our love for one another which flows from our commitment to follow Mary. While I have long believed that the education of young men is the most important work in the world, Ihave recently become even more convinced of the vital contribution that a Marianist Education is to ourlarger mission. Only parents and teachers can really appreciate the challenges inherent in the struggle toreach the minds and hearts of young men. Every ounce of discipline must be balanced with equal measureof faith and love; indeed they are in the end one act of sacrifice rooted in our profound respect for thedignity of each young man.On June 23rd I was privileged to attend the first profession of vows of Brother NormanCapinpin, SM. He and three other young men took that next step of their journey asbrothers in the Society of Mary. They together with hundreds of Marianists from aroundthe world gathered in the Spirit of Mary to celebrate our mission together. One of thenovices in the community, Brother Mark Motz will be joining us in the fall for his ministryinternship, following in the footsteps of Brother Norm and Bro. Jose Matos. We aregrateful for the opportunity to welcome another great young man as he continues hisformation in the Marianist family. During the beautiful celebration in June I came toappreciate more deeply the unique gift of the Society of Mary, to us, to the Church and tothe world. If our deepest hope is for the salvation of each young man, that each man findhis unique way of building the Kingdom, then educating each man as a son ofMary is the greatest gift we can offer. Our commitment to be disciples of Maryis not a tangent to our mission of Catholic Education; it is central to the missionitself. It is our Marianist character which makes education possible.I do not hesitate to say we are witnesses to miracles here every day. These youngmen are becoming sons of Mary, men who will change the world, all becauseof the love you give. Please continue to pray for this great mission of St. Mary’sHigh School. You and your intentions are in our prayer every day.Per Matrem Ad Filium,Rev. Mitchell S. LEADERSHIPA Message from the Chairman of the Board of DirectorsHave you ever noticed that when you talk to a St. Mary’s Alum, he alwaysacknowledges that he is a Dragon. Alums from other area high schoolsacknowledge their graduation from the individual institution, but never reallyrefer to themselves as a Junior Billiken, or a Cadet or a Spartan. Why is that? Ibelieve it is because of the life experience that each one of us shared during ourtime on the South Side. I believe that the Marian charism that was impartedto us by the Marianist Family, (the Brothers and Lay Marianists), created anatmosphere that enabled all of us to develop a deep and lasting bond. Some Alums have lost touch. However, once they come in contact with theschool again, the fire is re-kindled. The Honorable Judge Tom Prebil, CircuitJudge in St. Louis County, was recently awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the AlumniAssociation. Prior to the meeting, Judge Prebil took a tour of the campus. He was overwhelmed and wellpleased with what he saw. Now that Judge Prebil has re-connected, I expect to see a lot more from him.For all you who have not been to the South Grand Campus recently, stop by. Re-connect. Feel the fire, and become aware of the wonderful things that are happening at St. Mary’s. You know what greatexperiences you had; now it is necessary for you to step up so that the future Dragons can share the sameexperience. Our young Dragons deserve to share in our experiences and develop the bond that we have developed. But this can only happen if we, the Dragon Nation, step up and support the ongoing efforts of ouradministration and faculty.Your time, your talents, and your treasures are greatly appreciated. Let’s ensure that the Dragon livesforever.Lynn BarnettSPASMS: Judge Tom, Father Mitch, Kevin Hacker, Jane Goff and Frank SohmClarion Summer 2012 • 521094023_Summer_2012.indd 58/10/12 9:09 AM

LEADERSHIPA Message from the PrincipalDear Community of St. Mary’s High School,As we prepare for the 2012-2013 school year, we would like to extend ourbest to the class of 2012. Congratulations, also, to Mike McNiff, longtimeband director, who retired in May. We are grateful for Mike’s 40-plus years ofservice to the school. Congratulations, as well, to Frank Sohm who receivedthe Marian Award in April. This award recognizes Frank’s living exampleof the Marianist charism. It also recognizes his dedication to the mission ofCatholic education at St. Mary’s.This summer, we are preparing the building for another school year.Improvements will include new air conditioning in the Media Resource Center(MRC), gutter replacement for the chapel, new desks in three classrooms, andnew paint on the walls in the corridors, stairwells, and many of the classrooms. This summer, a number of parents and alumni have volunteered their time to paint these areas. Otherschools have experienced success with their volunteer improvement programs, and we anticipate successwith ours, as well. Thanks to Joe Divis for his organization of this project. It is our hope that thesevolunteers will continue to assist us in making improvements to your school.I would like to provide an update on the memorial plaque project for our alums who have sacrificed theirlives in service of our country. At present, the plaque is being created by one of our alums, Mike Nichols(‘91), who is an associate professor of Art at Western Kentucky University. The plaque will be dedicatedthis fall. I will send information out to the St. Mary’s community well in advance of the dedicationceremony. Since my last letter, two more alums’ names have been provided to me for inclusion; they arePaul M. Zielinski (‘52) and Edward A. Rhode (’67). Many thanks go out to all of you who have assistedin this project.I also wanted to include some information in this letter about an organization that has been active at St.Mary’s for many years—the Alumni Fathers’ Club. In the past, the club was moderated by Brother JohnHaug, SM and then by Tim Divis Sr. The members meet on the third Monday of every other month forbusiness purposes as well as fellowship and card playing. The meetings are held in the cafeteria. Thereare no dues, but members participate in the annual poker tournament in November and the Night atthe Races in March. Like the Alumni Association, this group uses the proceeds of these fundraisers tosupport the students and overall mission of the school. Membership has dropped over the years and weare interested in recruiting new members for this valuable organization. If you would like to be a member, please send me contact information, and I will send you details about the meeting dates and activities.Another request—I am interested in obtaining some volunteers; one of the jobswould be to help take care of the plants in and around the school’s greenhouse; another job would be to work in the MRC to assist Jake Parentwith some light duties. An hour or two, once a week, would be a greathelp. Finally, as we begin our 2012-2013 school year, I would like to extenda welcome to the class of 2016 and a thank you to all of you whohave supported and continue to support St. Mary’s and its mission.Kevin HackerClarion Winter 2011 • 721094023_Summer_2012.indd 78/10/12 9:09 AM

Cover S toryFrank SohmPassion and Dedication for More Than 40 YearsBy Kevin HackerFrank Sohm began to serve as a math teacher and coach at St. Mary’s High School in 1968. He is a graduateof Bishop DuBourg High School. While attending DuBourg, he served as student manager to their 1964 StateChampionship basketball team. He received his undergraduate degree, and later, his graduate degree from SaintLouis University. Shortly after Frank began his teaching career, he was called toserve his country in the United States Army. After training, he served as a militarypoliceman in South Korea. After returning to St. Mary’s, he continued his work as amath teacher. He has also taught computer courses, and he has for many years servedas an adjunct instructor of mathematics, teaching St. Mary’s students through SLU’s1818 Program. For more than 40 years, Frank has brought dedication and passionto the classroom. He has provided an excellent foundation for his students as theycontinued their education in college. For many years, Frank has coached basketball and tennis. Much of his basketballwork has been instructional at the “B” and “C” levels. He has demonstrated apassion for his sports and concern for his players. His tennis program has won anumber of league championships.Several years ago, Frank and his wife, Benita, became Lay Marianists. With the other Lay Marianists, Frankstrives to live the Marianist Charism and walk in the footsteps of Father Chaminade. In April, Frank received theMarian Award. The recipient of this award is selected by the faculty, and it is to be a person who exemplifies theMarianist Charism.Frank Sohm has been a blessing to the community of St. Mary’s High School. He has dedicated his life to themission of Catholic education. His students have witnessed this dedication.Math Teacher Frank Sohm Awarded 2012 Marian AwardCongratulations to math teacher Mr. Frank Sohm who was awarded the 2012 Marian Award for Teaching. Therecipient of this award is recommended by faculty and staff as one who exemplifies the five characteristics ofMarianist Education during his or her life and career. The following remarks were made by Mr. Sohm’s peers:“He is a model of passion, hard work and Marianist character.”“He is most deserving of this award.”“His toughness is backed up by his love of his students.”“His values are rooted in Christ.”Congratulations Mr. Sohm! Some of Mr. Sohm’s friends and current and former students wrote in to share their thoughts:Mr. Sohm was instrumental in preparing me for all of the high level math I took in earning my ElectricalEngineering degree in college. I still remember that in my Freshman year Calculus class at the University of NotreDame I was the only student out of over 800 that correctly solved one problem on a test. It was a very difficultproblem and the only way to solve it was to use the “squeeze theorem” – that I learned from Mr. Sohm mysenior year at St. Mary’s High School. I also give Mr. Sohm credit for influencing my decision to study ElectricalEngineering in college. Mr. Sohm’s computer science class in 1983-84 on those vintage (cutting edge at the time)Radio Shack computers was my first introduction to computers.– Tony Simon ’8420 • Clarion Summer 201221094023_Summer_2012.indd 208/10/12 9:09 AM

COVER STORYWhen you look under the faculty and staff tab onthe St. Mary’s website, it lists Mr. Sohm as a teacherof mathematics, which is true, but if you have everhad the opportunity to meet Mr. Sohm or attend hisclasses, you would be well aware that he is a teacherof so much more. I have had Mr. Sohm as a teacherfor two years now. In those two years, I have grownso much, not only as a student, but as a youngman. The values and life lessons that Mr. Sohm hasimplemented into his curriculum are so very crucialnot only inside the classroom, but outside as well. Ican personally say the root of many of my personalsuccesses I have had in high school can be tracedback to principles I have learned from Mr. Sohm.In my opinion, the reason Mr. Sohm has such animpact on his students is because of his full andabsolute dedication in assuring that we, as futureleaders of this world, embrace all of the necessaryknowledge that is put forth in front of us. He is notonly a vocal leader and role model to students, buthe also guides by his actions. By his strong effortsto make it to school every day possible, and hisyearning for even more time to shape our mindsthan the regular eighty-five minutes of class, heshows the students and faculty just how importantour time is to him. He acts in such a humble andcaring way, yet he teaches with passion and vigorbecause he knows that it will help us concentrateand compile the knowledge in our brain more easily.Mr. Sohm is a teacher that is not afraid to step out ofhis comfort zone and act a bit goofy when trying tomake an important point about something so long asit helps us to remember what he is teaching and thepoint he was trying to get across. Whether it is in hisclasses or the sports teams he coaches, Mr. Sohmpushes you to your fullest potential, not because itmakes him look like a better teacher or coach, butbecause we should expect nothing less of ourselvesthan giving it our all. He is a man I have looked upto since I took my first steps through the thresholdof St. Mary’s, and he will be a man I admire andidolize for the rest of my life.– Anthony Cataldo ‘13Current StudentI had been fortunate throughout my grade schooland high school years to have excellent Mathinstructors, and Mr. Sohm is one of the best. He isable to teach to all levels and is always availablebefore and after school to those who need additionalhelp. Thanks to him, I am well prepared forMathematics courses in college along with any othercourses requiring the use of Mathematics. There was an incident where Mr. Sohm almostcracked a smile in class. He had a student at theboard doing a fairly simple multiplication problem. The student forgot the negative sign with his answer.Of course, Mr. Sohm started into a lecture on howimportant it was to get the sign correct in a problem. He said, “Without the negative sign, your answerClarion Summer 2012 • 2121094023_Summer_2012.indd 218/10/12 9:09 AM

We wereboth math majors and had severalclasses together at the university. Weboth went into education and havefollowed each other’s careers forthe last 45 years. Frank definitelydeserves this wonderful honor. He isan excellent teacher who has dedicatedhis life to his students at St. Mary’s. Iknow he has been instrumental overthe years in making sure his studentsearn college credit through the 1818program in calculus. Itwas almost as funny watching Mr. Sohm use everyounce of energy not to laugh.Congratulations on the award. It is well deserving.– Ed Kopff ‘77Mr. Sohm taught me several keys lessons. Asidefrom his insanely simple approach to Algebra whichallowed me to pass college Algebra and ace BusinessCalculus finals with relative ease, Mr. Sohm taughtme to have a purpose...Before Mr. Sohm, athletics was my only challengeand school (math in particular) was something I“did.” I remember the lesson to this day: Mr. Sohmcalled me out during class one day saying to mebluntly “You know, Andy, I think math, to you,is just about doing stuff. Well, it’s not. It meanssomething.” It was such a simple lesson, and it hitme right away. I can honestly say I was not his beststudent but under his watch I gradually grew into aperson who is known for doing things with purpose.Whether it is how I run my business, interact with astranger, or write out a testimonial. Many wonderful stories were swapped before weallowed him to rejoin his family’s table.– Pete Pancella ‘79Because of Frank Sohm, I found an interestin Computer Science when he taught my firstprogramming class. In fact, he made programmingso interesting, that it became my major and led tomy career in IT. Thank you Mr. Sohm.– Steve Cox ‘79I had Mr. Sohm in Algebra and really enjoyed himas a teacher. He also was involved in basketball andcontributed to many kids development.Thank you for everything.– Tom Bilyeu ‘77Mr. Sohm taught me an appreciation for math. Hewas able to break down some of the most difficultproblems and put them into the simplest form soeveryone in the class could follow the material andunderstand what he was trying to show you. He saidone day that Math was his area, outside of Math heis at a loss, English, Science, etc. no good, but mathhe understood.Math was one of my worst subjects until I had himas a teacher my Junior year. I now actually have acareer where I use math every day. S t. Mary’s Sports28 • Clarion Summer 2012Baseball Wrap-UpThe 2012 Baseball season marked many ups and downs. We finished with a record of 12-15, which is the 2nd season in arow with double digit wins. This is saying a lot considering the schedule we play. Being in the highest baseball class (4A) inthe state with 350 students creates many welcomed challenges. 8 of the 15 losses this season were to class 4A teams, most ofwhich triple St. Mary’s in enrollment, including the State Runner-up, Parkway North, and the State Champion, RockwoodSummit, who eliminated us in districts. 11 of the 15 losses wereto teams who finished the season with an above .500 winningpercentage with a combined record of 196-97.Even though we were inconsistent at times, by the second halfof the season we showed much improvement and what “DragonBaseball” is all about, winning 7 of the last 12 and 5 of the last8 games. We opened the 2012 season at Divis Field in the Lindbergh/Mehlville Tournament with an exciting 2-1 victory vs. WebsterGroves.Unfortunately, it went a bit downhill, losing 5 in a row. 1 ofthose losses, however, made history when on March 29th, ColinMcDonough hit an absolute bomb (about 425 feet) over theright field fence for the first high school home run at Divis Field. In 2 seasons, only 3 home runs have been hit there and Colin hit2 out of 3.Maybe that was the spark we needed because after that game,we would go on to win more games than we lost. Two days later,we had a huge Saturday, winning both games of a double headeragainst Hancock and a good team from Chicago, Loyola Academy. After some near misses (3 losses by a combined 4 runs), we beat conference foe, Lutheran St. Charles, 6-4, after being 4-1going into the 4th inning and capped off by a 3 run 7th inning. On an unexpectedly cold Friday in late April, we won an exciting 10 inning game vs. Affton 4-3.Fast forward to May 3rd, in one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of, we gave eventual conference champSt. Dominic’s their only conference loss of the season by a score of 4-1. 6-3 left handed pitcher, junior Adam Bieber threwa no-hitter, striking out 8 and only walking 2 batters. It wasn’t easy to do against St. Dominic’s, always a formidable team, but at the time they were ranked 7th in small schools. The wind was trying to do its part to spoil it but our defense heldup including a couple great plays, a diving catch by centerfielder Jeremy Behnen and a circus catch over the fence in foulterritory by Thomas Garcia. In the 1st round of districts, we beat Lindbergh by a score of 5-4. Lindbergh is a school which has close to one thousandboys enrolled so it was quite an accomplishment … I am extremely proud!Congratulations to the 2012 Archdiocese Athletic Association All-Conference honorees: 1st Team – Adam Bieber (Pitcher),Colin McDonough (Infield); 2nd team – Kevin Hennessy (Infield), Jeremy Behnen (Outfield); Honorable Mention – KevinHennessy (Pitcher), Joe Ross (Pitcher), Thomas Garcia (Infield), Joe Maassen (Outfield), Justin Crump (Outfield), JustinNienhaus (Utility Fielder). For the 3rd year in a row, the St. Mary’s Varsity Baseball Team achieved Academic All-State by the Missouri High SchoolBaseball Coaches Association. The team had to have at least a 3.0 combined grade point average. In 2012, it was 3.37.Individually, Jeremy Behnen won the Award with a 3.94 GPA, class rank of 4, and an ACT of 27 while starting in at least70% of the games. Congratulations to Jeremy and the Team for this special accomplishment! In 2013 season, we will have some conference additions and a new district which will both prove to be extremelycompetitive but I have high expectations. We return a solid mix, including senior leaders and talented juniors making theirdebut, not to mention the bulk of our pitching. Even though we graduated 6 starting seniors, who I will miss both on and offthe field, I am looking forward to continuing the momentum created over the past 2 seasons by the class of 2011 and 2012.Any alumni interested in helping the Baseball Program in any way, please contact me.Varsity Baseball Head Coach - Marko Samardzic“Pride, Passion, Purpose”21094023_Summer_2012.indd 288/10/12 9:10 AM

SPORTSWe had another stellar year. The Hockey Dragonswent all the way to the finals this year. We had someoutstanding seniors, such as Jeff Rearden, Drew Jarvis,Sam Shipp and Tony Montero - we will miss theirleadership. St.Mary’s highest scorer was Drew Jarvis, those are some big skates to fill. The 2012 team is stacked with seniors and, we couldhave our best year yet. Max Watson, Drew Mahanna,Michael Lamb, Billy Lamb, Adam Mecalo and goaliesJosh Shindler and Jacob Kolternbraun-make up a teamthat is loaded with upper class!!!Other players returning are Shaun McConnell, JakeMurphy, Kyle Koelling, Rob Parks, Remington Geeand many more. The guys are already getting someworkouts in.The Founders cup was within our grasp, we had beatenFox in tight games before coming up against Ladue. We lost several key players due to injury and lost thegame in a close contested way!Hockey Wrap-UpWe are bidding farewell to our senior brothers, and our Coach and friend Ralph Magee, who will be greatlymissed. The new coach is Ken Rosenhoeffer. He is a great coach. We will also welcome back Coach Wolf. Most of all we want to thank our fans for coming to the games and our great hope is that we SEE ALL THEFANS IN THE STANDS. Please contact Mr. Schlindler if you are interested in joining our club group. We arelooking forward to seeing all of you.Tennis Wrap-UpThe Dragons lost 10 seniors to graduation and had to rebuild this year. The Dragons started slowly but continued to improve as the season went along. The Dragons finished the year on a strong note by finishing 2nd in DistrictsdefeatingVashon 5-0, defeating Cleveland ROTC 5-0 and losing to DuBourg4-5 in a VERY close match. In the Individual Districts, Drew Jarvis qualified for sectionals by finishingsecond. And the Doubles Team of freshman Isaac Julius & freshman EricClancy won the individual Doubles Tournament and advanced to sectionalplay. This marks the 1st time in at least 24 years that a doubles team from St.Mary’s has won a district Doubles Tournament. Despite losing in sectional playthe Dragons faced the strongest competition in the state. Drew lost to the 2ndplace winner in state and the Doubles team lost to the eventual state championsfrom Clayton. The future for next year’s Dragons appears bright as only Drew Jarvis willgraduate. Returning for next year are Chris Morris (2nd singles), Matt Smith(3rd singles), Isaac Julius (4th singles), Eric Clancy (5th singles) and Doublesplayers Jeremy Kamper & Jordan Champion. Also improved Junior varsityplayers were Matt O’Neil, Tim Kroger and Gabe Santander. With a strongsummer of practice, the Dragons can expect to do well in the 2013 season.Clarion Summer 2012 • 2921094023_Summer_2012.indd 298/10/12 9:10 AM

S t. Mary’s Advancement19Thirty-One MenIt has always been said that there is strength tobe found in numbers. In this case, the number isrelatively small but the impact is life changing.19Thirty-One Men was founded by a group ofindividuals passionate about the value of Catholiceducation andcommitted to makingit available to youngmen from veryincome challengedfamilies. Since St.Mary’s High Schoolopened in 1931, it hasbeen committed toproviding young men,who would otherwisenot have the sameresources for success, the opportunity togrow academically, spiritually, professionally andpersonally andtransforming them forlife. The concept is simple- a circle of thirtypeople committedto giving $31 permonth for four years. The outcome - four years of aSt. Mary’s education for one young man who thenbecomes the ‘center’ of the circle and the thirty-firstman. The money generated by the group will coverall the costs associated with high school educationincluding tuition, books, uniforms and all other fees. The young men who will benefit from the generosityof these circles will be chosen from an ACCESSAcademies sponsored school in the Archdiocese ofSt. Louis (Nativity Miguel schools). There are threeNativity Miguel schools (Central Catholic Academy,Holy Trinity Academy and St. Cecilia Academy),plus three independent Nativity Miguel schools(De La Salle Middle School, Loyola Academy andMarian Middle School) that are designed to providefamilies strugglingin impoverishedneighborhoodswith a high qualityeducation. St. Mary’sHigh School is theideal fit for manyof these studentsdue to its south citylocation, diversity, small class sizeand nurturingenvironment. As a member of19Thirty-One Men,the rewards areendless. ADVANCEMENTDragon Call to ActionAttention all St. Mary’s Alumni! We need your input. We are collecting information on our website for ourCareer Exploration Program (CEP). We are asking all alumni to go to http://www.stmaryshs.com/careerexploration-program.aspxand fill out the online form if you haven’t in the past or need to update because of achange in place of employment and/or position. The larger participation in this endeavor the better even if youare not able to take part in the actual day. Last year’s was a huge success and we are looking to build on thatexperience so these young men can get a sense of those that came before them and what they are out there doing. It will only take a few minutes of your time, God bless & thank you for your time!Planned GivingRecently retired? Generate a source of additional income that can increase and avoid capitalgaintax.People often find themselves in a classic “confined” position in their investment. They wantto convert the value of the investment to a source of income but face serious capital-gain tax.If you face this challenge, consider a charitable remainder unitrust. A charitable remainderunitrust can provide significant tax advantages, increase income, and satisfy charitable goals.Example: Ted and Mary N, both 67, recently retired. They have a number of stock investments that haveappreciated but pay no dividends. Now that they are retired, they would like to increase their annual cash flow. The stock is worth five times the $50,000 they originally paid for it. When they retired, they talked about sellingthe stock and reinvesting the proceeds to produce income because it pays no dividends. However, they werediscouraged to find that $30,000 of the $250,000 selling price would go to pay capital-gain tax.Ted and Mary would like to make a significant charitable gift. In talking with their planned-giving representative, they discovered that they could avoid the capital-gain tax on the initial transfer of the stock to a charitableremainder unitrust. Because the unitrust is tax-exempt, it can sell the stock and owe no tax. This means the entire$250,000 value of the stock will stay at work for Ted and Mary, producing another source of cash flow. Further, their income will grow if the value of the trust increases. At 67 they plan to live a long time, so they decide on a6% unitrust payment. The first year the trust will pay $15,000, but if the trust obtains an average total return of8%, the distribution will be almost $20,000 in 15 years. They also get to deduct $75,390, saving them more than$21,100 in taxes. One of the most attractive features of the charitable remainder unitrust is that the income is based on the value ofthe trust as it changes from year to year. If the value goes up, so does your income. As Ted and Mary discovered, choosing a relatively low unitrust percentageenables the trust to grow faster, therebyincreasing the size of payments in later years. This is especially important to relatively youngdonors. If your situation is similar or interested in justgetting some more information on ways toimprove your specific situation please feel free tocontact The Director of Advancement, Joe Divisat any time. 314-481-8400 ext. 112 or emaildivisj@stmaryshs.com.Clarion Summer 2012 • 3321094023_Summer_2012.indd 338/10/12 9:10 AM
