Bridge-to-Bridge (B/B) Phone/Distance Line2.3.6.1 Distance Markers. Distance markers onthe B/B phone/distance line are arranged as shown inFigure 2-11. They are made up as follows:1. In daylight, use colored-cloth, nylon-coated,fabric or painted-canvas markers, each 8 inches(20.3 cm) by 10 inches (25.4 cm), and spaced at20 foot (6.0 m) intervals from 0 to 300 feet (0 to91.4 m). The distance is shown in numerals 5inches (12.7 cm) high. Numerals shall be whiteon red or blue markers, yellow on green markers, green on yellow markers, and blue on whitemarkers. Markers must be sewn, lashed, or otherwisestopped off in such manner that they willnot slide along the line. Pouches are provided oneach side of canvas markers for lashing chemicallights at night to provide an unobstructedview during flapping and twisting of the distanceline.2. At night, use chemical lights as indicated: twoblue chemical lights, one on each side of themarker, at the 60, 100, 140, and 180 foot (18.2,30.4, 42.6, and 54.8 m) markers; one red chemicallight on the approach ship’s side of the othermarkers. (One-cell, pin-on-type, red flashlightsmay be used in lieu of red chemical lights.)2.3.6.2 Passing the Line. Pass the B/B phone/distance line from the approach ship to the control shipusing the lead line messenger (Figure 2-12):1. The control ship attaches the lead line messengerfor the B/B phone/distance line to the mainmessenger of the rig nearest the B/B phone/distanceline’s tending point. If a delay develops, orif the rig being sent over is remote from the tendingpoint, the control ship (approach ship if aCV, LHA, LHD, or LPH) sends over an individualshot line for the B/B phone/distanceline. The lead line messenger is equipped with asnap hook and has a tag marked, “Attach zeroend B/B phone/distance line.”2. The approach ship unhooks the lead line messengerand snaps it on to the zero end of the B/Bphone/distance line. If an individual shot line isused, the approach ship attaches the zero end ofthe B/B phone/distance line to the shot line. Shethen signals the control ship, “Heave around.”3. The control ship hauls in the B/B phone/distanceline and secures it with the zero flag at the outermostrail.2-21 ORIGINAL
