<strong>NWP</strong> 4-<strong>01.4</strong>APPENDIX HMetric Weights and MeasuresThe International System of Units (SI) is a modernversion of the metric system established by internationalagreement. The units of metric measurementused in <strong>NWP</strong> 4-<strong>01.4</strong> are:1. The meter (m), centimeter (cm), and millimeter(mm) — for length.2. The kilogram (kg) and the metric ton (t) — forweight.3. The cubic meter (m 3 ) — for volume.In addition, two SI units are used:1. The Pascal (Pa) — for pressure2. The watt (W) — for power.All metric and SI units are written with lower caseletters, except for those named after a person. Periodsare never used. Figure H-1 provides a table of metricunits. Figure H-2 provides a table for converting nonmetricunits into metric units. Nautical mile, knot, andtime remain the same under the metric system.H-1 ORIGINAL
