NWP 4-01.4TOTAL LOADLENGTH APPROX-IMATELY 35 FEET(10.6 m) WHENTHREADEDUPPER EYESAPPROXIMATELY29 FEET (8.8 m)WHEN THREADEDTHROUGHLOWEREYESSINGLE LEG THREADEDTHROUGH EYES OFPENDANTS (UPPER EYESNOT SHOWN)SAFETY HOOKHOOKED TO LEGA MINIMUM OFTEN TO TWELVESLINGS WITH LEGSLEFT ATTACHEDWARNINGThe hookup man shall stay clear of theVERTREP platform until the incoming loadis on deck and the pendant clear of the load.As the helicopter moves over the return load, theLSE signals the hookup man to pick up the hoistingsling, hand the pendant to the air crewman positioned inthe open cargo access hatch or place it over the helicopter’shook, and clear the area.On ships with Class 5 VERTREP platforms, there isinsufficient rotor clearance to allow the helicopter tohover low enough to pick up the load in the normalmanner. On such ships, the helicopter hovers at a higheraltitude and the air crewman stationed in the open cargoaccess hatch (1) hooks the eye of a recovery pendant(Mk 92 hoisting sling) to the helicopter’s cargo hookand then (2) lowers the leg of the recovery pendantdown to the cargo load on deck. The hookup man thengoes to the load, attaches the safety hook on the pendantto the load, and clears the area.WARNINGFigure 10-21. Mk 105 Slings Being Returned toUNREP Ship10.10.8.5 Retrograde From a Class 5 VERT-REP Platform. For returns from Class 5 VERTREPplatforms, the helicopter will provide a recovery pendant(Mk 92 hoisting sling) at the time of pickup.Make up return loads in the same manner as above, butdo not attach the hoisting sling. On loads with two, four, or six attachment points, attach the requirednumber of legs to the load. On a load with a single attachmentpoint (nets and pallets), make up in the samemanner as a cargo net (Figure 10-5). On a load ofslings, use only one sling leg.10.10.9 Staging and Pickup of Loads for Return.Any retrograde cargo should be prepared in the samemanner as described for the UNREP ship. When theVERTREP platform is of sufficient size to accommodateseveral loads, place the return load as close to thelineup line as possible on the side of the platform awayfrom the helicopter’s approach. This will leave sufficientroom for the helicopter to deposit the next incomingload on the approach side of the platform and thenmove forward over the return load.Load preparation of retrograde cargo andVERTREP equipment for return to the UN-REP ship is as important as proper loadmakeup by the UNREP ship. Danger to thehelicopter or loss of part or all of the loadcan result if the cargo is not properly securedor if prescribed methods are not followed.VERTREP equipment may be returned internally,if the receiving ship has a landing platform. Normallythis is time-consuming and is not desired unless thedistance is greater than 25 miles (46.3 km) or theequipment is so light that it will be dangerous to carryit externally.WARNINGDo not, under any circumstances, hook anempty net to the helicopter without at least 4wooden or 6 metal pallets or an equivalentweight in the net. To do so would endangerthe helicopter by allowing the net to blowinto the helicopter’s rotors. In questionablecases consult the aircraft commander.10-28 ORIGINAL
