<strong>NWP</strong> 4-<strong>01.4</strong>7.7 EMERGENCY BREAKAWAY PROCE-DURES FOR BURTON RIGSNoteThe following procedures apply to rigs asindicated.7.7.1 Single Burton. Disconnect the receiving station’swhip and cast it overboard, clear of the deck edge.(If time precludes the return of a suspended load orempty cargo hook, each station shall pay out its wire andendeavor to maintain the load or hook centered betweenthe ships as they separate, until all wires are run off of thewinch drums.) If power is not available to a winch, clearthe station of nonessential personnel. The winch watcherpays out the whip as rapidly as possible, using the magneticor hydraulic hand brake, and controls the payoutrate to prevent birdcaging on the winch drum.7.7.2 Heavy-Lift Burton (Two Double Whips).When two double whips are in use and power is availableto all winches or to one of two winches at eachstation:1. Deposit the load or empty cargo hook at thenearest station. (Do not unhook the load. If thehook is empty, secure it with easing-out line.)2. The other station maintains slack in the whip.3. Cut the other station’s whip, just outboard of therunner block.NoteCutting of the wire rope is required in thiscase, because of the time required to unshacklethe runner blocks from the tie plateand to bend on the rig messenger to returnthe rig.7.7.3 Heavy-Lift Burton (One Wire, Single-Part). When one of the wires in use is single-part andpower is available to all winches or to one winch at thestation using two winches:1. Deposit the load or empty cargo hook at the stationwith the double whip. (Do not unhook the load. Ifthe hook is empty, secure it with easing-out line.)2. The other station maintains slack in the whip.3. Disconnect the single whip from the tie plate andcast the whip overboard, clear of the deck edge.(If time precludes disconnecting the shackle thatholds the single whip to the tie plate, the whipshould be cut close to the end fitting.)7.7.4 Heavy-Lift Burton (Both Wires, Single-Part). When both of the wires in use are single-part,deposit the load at the nearest station. Carry out the proceduresfor one wire, single-part (see paragraph 7.7.3).7.7.5 Heavy-Lift Burton (Power Not Available).When power is not available to retrieve the rig, clear thestation of nonessential personnel.
