The highline winchoperator or automatic ram control takes in and pays outwire only to compensate for any larger change in thedistance between ships. The ram tensioner is shown incross-section in Figure 6-3.WARNINGRam tensioners use a phosphate ester fireresistant hydraulic fluid per MIL-H-19457D.This fluid is safe to use when handledproperly and cautiously. Post in a conspicuousplace the caution described inparagraph B.1, Appendix B. Brief personnelwho may come in contact with this fluid onthe following safety precautions:1. Avoid inhalation, ingestion, skin and eyecontact. If exposed, remove contaminatedclothing. Immediately wash exposed skinwith soap and water, and rinse eyes for 15minutes with water. Seek medical aid.Launder contaminated clothing immediately,using oily clothing method.2. Keep food, smoking material, and drinkaway from areas where fluid is beinghandled or stored.3. Wash hands thoroughly with soap andwater immediately after handling fluid.Discard any contaminated food, smokingmaterials, or drink.4. Respiratory and eye protection isrequired in the area of leaks that result in afine mist or spray in the air.5. Wear protective clothing in keeping withthe work task. Stock numbers of appropriateprotective clothing are listed in NAV-SEAINST 5100.13.6. Follow precautions of NAVSEAINST5100.13 when handling or cleaning up spillsof phosphate ester fluid.WARNINGOlder ram tensioners may still contain fluidmade to MIL-H-19457B, sometimes calledCellulube 220A or Fyrquel 220 PM. This fluidcontains Tri-Orthocresyl-Phosphate (TOCP),which can be absorbed into the body throughthe skin and may affect certain nervefunctions. This older, more hazardous fluidmay be identified by its green color and shouldbe changed to the current nonneurotoxic fluidat the first opportunity. Fluid made toMIL-H-19457C is blue in color.6.6.1.1 Rigging the Highline. The ram tensioneris prepared generally in accordance with proceduresgiven in Appendix B.
