The highline winchoperator or automatic ram control takes in and pays outwire only to compensate for any larger change in thedistance between ships. The ram tensioner is shown incross-section in Figure 6-3.WARNINGRam tensioners use a phosphate ester fireresistant hydraulic fluid per MIL-H-19457D.This fluid is safe to use when handledproperly and cautiously. Post in a conspicuousplace the caution described inparagraph B.1, Appendix B. Brief personnelwho may come in contact with this fluid onthe following safety precautions:1. Avoid inhalation, ingestion, skin and eyecontact. If exposed, remove contaminatedclothing. Immediately wash exposed skinwith soap and water, and rinse eyes for 15minutes with water. Seek medical aid.Launder contaminated clothing immediately,using oily clothing method.2. Keep food, smoking material, and drinkaway from areas where fluid is beinghandled or stored.3. Wash hands thoroughly with soap andwater immediately after handling fluid.Discard any contaminated food, smokingmaterials, or drink.4. Respiratory and eye protection isrequired in the area of leaks that result in afine mist or spray in the air.5. Wear protective clothing in keeping withthe work task. Stock numbers of appropriateprotective clothing are listed in NAV-SEAINST 5100.13.6. Follow precautions of NAVSEAINST5100.13 when handling or cleaning up spillsof phosphate ester fluid.WARNINGOlder ram tensioners may still contain fluidmade to MIL-H-19457B, sometimes calledCellulube 220A or Fyrquel 220 PM. This fluidcontains Tri-Orthocresyl-Phosphate (TOCP),which can be absorbed into the body throughthe skin and may affect certain nervefunctions. This older, more hazardous fluidmay be identified by its green color and shouldbe changed to the current nonneurotoxic fluidat the first opportunity. Fluid made toMIL-H-19457C is blue in color.6.6.1.1 Rigging the Highline. The ram tensioneris prepared generally in accordance with proceduresgiven in Appendix B. The ram is extended to its full-up6-8 ORIGINAL
NWP 4-01.4position and remains extended while the highline ispassed. The highline winch operator pays out wirethrough the ram until the highline reaches the receivingstation (see Figure 6-4). When the highlineis connected at the receiving station, the highlinewinch operator takes in wire and compresses the ram toabout midstroke. The highline ASD should be turnedOFF. Tension is set in the highline as soon as the ramstarts compressing. The predetermined ram pressureprovides the amount of tension in the highline.6.6.1.3 Operating the Highline. Once the ram isdepressed to midstroke, the highline will haul in withany upward movement of the ram and pay out with anydownward movement of the ram. This action compensatesfor normal ship motion. The ram compresses topay out wire when the ships move apart and extends tohaul in wire when the ships move closer together. Thehighline winch operator hauls in or pays out wire onlyto keep the ram within the safety zone.The amount of tension in the highline can be variedto suit (1) the static-tested load of the padeye at the receivingstation and (2) the weight of the load to betransferred. Increasing or decreasing the weight of theload on the trolley will increase or decrease thehighline’s catenary, but will not change the tension inthe highline.NoteBe sure that the air pressure and volume arein accordance with operating instructions.Ensure ram operating air valves are fullyopen. Partially closed valves will causerelief valve to lift.The amount of tension in the highline depends on thepressure of the air in the ram tensioner’s accumulator.For every 100 psi (689 kPa) of air, there is about 1,000lb (454 kg) of tension in the highline. For example,1,950 psi (13,443 kPa) of air will put about 19,500 lb(8,845 kg) of tension in the highline.6.6.2 Inhaul and Outhaul Winches.
