NWP 4-01.43. Breakaway procedures to be used when transfersare completed4. Any required deviations from the receivingship’s desired plan.6.3.5.2 Invoices. Ammunition and missiles transferredat sea are normally accompanied by itemized invoices. Checkand sign original invoices and return them to the delivery shipin the last empty container. If time does not permit this, returnthem by guard mail or regular mail at a later date.6.3.5.3 Reports. It is the delivery ship’s responsibilityto prepare and submit reports required for the lossof or damage to ammunition and missiles during transfer;this responsibility is the receiving ship’s, once ammunitionand missiles safely reach her deck.6.4 TRANSFER OF AMMUNITIONAND MISSILESTransfer ammunition and missiles in accordancewith the procedures in this chapter and Chapter 7 for thetransfer rig selected and the procedures for ammunitionand missile transfer described below. The common proceduresin Chapter 2 also apply. Refer to Chapter 10 forspecial procedures to be followed when ammunitionand missiles are transferred by helicopter (VERTREP).NoteThe requirements in paragraph 6.1.5.1 applyto personnel who transfer and handle ammunitionand missiles.6.4.1 Load Limitations. Loads for transfer mustmeet requirements for the transfer rig used and for thetype of ammunition or missile to be transferred. Thefollowing requirements must be adhered to rigidly:1. Safe transfer loads and load limitations establishedby NAVSEA for the transfer method used(see this chapter and Chapter 7)2. Types of loads, weight limitations, and handlingequipment prescribed in NAVSEA OP 3206 forthe transfer of ammunition and missiles.Limit loads for transfer to those that can be safelyhandled under existing conditions. Commanding officersshould reduce loads below the permissible maximumsduring adverse conditions.6.4.2 Test Loads. Prior to transfer of any type oflive ammunition, test the rig to be used by cycling adummy load. The weight of the dummy load must becomparable to the weight of the load to be transferred.6.4.3 Handling and Transfer Procedures. Usefulsources of information on the transfer of ammunitionand missiles are NAVSEA OP 3206, MIL-STD1326 series, and NAVSEA S9570-AA-MMA-010.The following procedures apply to transfers of ammunitionand missiles:1. Use mechanical handling and strikedown equipment, such as roller conveyors and ammunition slides, whenever they are available. They will reduce thework involved in manually lifting and moving ammunition. They will also decrease the likelihood ofdamage to materials and injury to personnel.2. Transfer missiles and missile components simultaneously;so that, if the replenishment operation is interrupted, missiles that are already on board thecombatant will be complete for operational purposes.3. The order for transfer of missiles and boosters isspecified by the combatant, as determined by itsstrikedown system. For example, the order fortransfer of Terrier/Standard ER missiles to aCG-47 Class ship is:Booster-booster, missile-missile;or,Booster-missile, booster-missile.4. The direction that missiles face during transfer isalso specified by the combatant, since the forwardend of the missile must face the launcher, after the missile has passed through the combatant’sstrikedown system.5. When an awkward or sensitive missile or ammunitionload is to be transferred, use tag lines andsteadying lines or a Mk 1 strongback to preventthe load from rotating and to control the pendulumaction of the load. Refer to paragraphs 6.6.7through 6.6.7.4 and Figures 6-8 through 6-11.6. To expedite transfer of Tartar/Standard MR missiles, the delivery ship must properly align the railcomponents with a standard rail gauge. Thisshould be done prior to sending the dolly to the receivingship for either on-loading or off-loading ofmissiles.6-6 ORIGINAL
