NWP 4-01.4CHAPTER 6Solid Cargo Transfer — STREAMRigging and Operation6.1 BASIC CONSIDERATIONSA number of different methods can be used for transferof solid cargo between ships. The preferred methodis STREAM, when both the delivery ship and the receivingship have the capability to use it.This chapter covers transfers of solid cargo betweenU.S. Navy ships, including MSC ships, and selectedmerchant ships using the STREAM rig. This chapteralso covers transfers of ammunition, missiles, and theircomponents. Solid cargo may also be transferred usingone of the Burton methods in Chapter 5. For transfers ofsolid cargo between ships of the NATO nations, seeATP 16.6.1.1 Rig Selection. Select the rig to be used for aparticular replenishment operation on the followingbases:1. Type and quantity of cargo2. Capacity of the rig and associated fittings3. Weight of the heaviest load and size of the largestload4. Weather and sea conditions at the time oftransfer5. Type and location of receiving station.STREAM rigs in order of preference are:1. STREAM with all-tensioned wiresa. Traveling SURFb.
