<strong>NWP</strong> 4-<strong>01.4</strong>DECK DEPARTMENT1. Purge and check telemotor system2. Check steering system and gyroerror (all steering stations)3. Have megaphone ready for use on thebridge and fueling station4. Lead out and inspect necessaryfirefighting equipment5. Take ullages and temperatures of cargotanks6. Rig in life boats, and remove seapainter on fueling side7. Have all men on deck wear life jacketsand protective helmets14. Use red, green and amber paddles/flags or flashlights/wands at each station forhand signals.15. Prior to using a hose, check it visuallyand test it by compressed air for leaks16. Rig a temporary manila lifeline when asection of the railing is removed17. Prepare sound-powered telephoneswith watertight jackboxes for use betweenfueling stations and bridge18. Connect length of hose to cargo manifoldif required for a straight lead, more flexibility,or for jumper hose from one side ofthe tanker to the other side19. In the event of icy conditions, have sandor other suitable material ready8. Clear unnecessary men from fuelingstations9. Provide anti-chafing gear in the areawhere hoses come across. (Old canvas,cargo nets, used manila line or boat fenderswill suffice.)10. Provide tools at each station for makingconnections, for opening valves, and for cuttingthe lines and breaking the rigs in caseof emergency.11. Mark transfer stations with 3-foot (91.4cm) square pieces of bunting: red for fuel oil,blue for diesel oil, yellow-blue triangles forF44, red-blue triangles for F76, green withwhite vertical stripes for stores, and white forwater12. Illuminate transfer stations for night operationswith lights having yellow lenses orfilters. Never use white lights at night becauseof their blinding effect.13. Have drip pans, rags, sawdust, and soforth ready for controlling oil spillageENGINE DEPARTMENT1. Have maximum power available2. Test and have pumps ready3. Cut in steam and warm up deckmachinery4. Check that there is air pressure forblowing through hoses and that there are noleaks5. Subject cargo pipeline system andvalves to a hydrostatic test of approximately75 psi (517.1 kPa) for tightness on the ballastleg of the voyage prior to leading cargofor transfer at sea. This is necessary becausethe cargo tanks, pipelines, and valvesmust be tight to prevent contamination bysea water which may be loaded as ballast tomaintain trim during refueling.Figure 5-29.
