These tankers are operated by shippingcompanies under a contract or a charter with MSC.They have limited FAS equipment installed for transferringpetroleum products at sea by the alongside method.(“Limited” in that they can refuel only those fleet unitsthat can pass a span wire or fuel STREAM rig.)Selected tankers are also equipped for deliveringfuel by the astern method or by the alongside methodusing modular fuel delivery stations that can deliver afuel STREAM rig.The U.S. Navy supports the installation of suchequipment in order to increase national defense capabilities. This FAS capability contributes to fleet readinessand provides increased flexibility duringemergencies. By supplying petroleum products toNavy ships at sea, tankers make it possible for fleetunits to remain on station instead of having to break offoperations and return to port for refueling.5-30 ORIGINAL
