Typical Astern Fueling Station Keeping With 2-1/2-Inch (63.5 mm) HoseSecure a 10-foot (3.0 m) pendant with a 3-inch (76.2mm) by 8-inch (203.2 mm) long link to the special hoseclamp, using a 5/8-inch (15.8 mm) safety shackle, andlead the long link out to the hose cap. Secure 100 feet(30.4 m) of 3-inch (76.2 mm) polypropylene messengerto the special hose clamp, using a 5/8-inch (15.8 mm)shackle, and lead the messenger out through the sternchock and back on deck. Marry the messenger connectingpendant to the hose with 9-thread near the bitter endof the hose. (See Figures 5-22 and 5-23.)Secure a 25-foot (7.6 m) section of 1-inch (25.4 mm)polypropylene to the bitter end of the 100-foot (30.4 m)long 3-inch (76.2 mm) polypropylene messenger. Securethe messenger pick-up float to the end of the25-foot (7.6 m) messenger, and fake the messenger onthe fantail ready for streaming.Note• Paint the outboard 50-foot (15.2 m) length ofhose international orange.• The messenger pickup float may be one ofseveral buoyant objects. Metal spheres, suchas those used on ATF and ARS, are small, light, and ideal for day use. However, thereis no practical way of securing adequatelighting for night refueling. The positionbuoy Mk I is recommended because it is stableand can be fitted with a flagstaff or lights.Prepare the position marker buoy for streaming fromthe opposite side of the ship from which the fueling rigwill be streamed. Attach a flagstaff displaying an internationalorange or red flag to the marker buoy. For nightstreaming, add a minesweeping light. Secure the buoy toa sufficient length of 1-1/2-inch (38.1 mm) circumferencedouble-braided nylon rope to permit streaming theposition marker buoy 300 feet (91.4 m) astern. Place amarker at the 300-foot (91.4 m) point on the 1-1/2-inch(38.1 mm) double-braided nylon to ensure proper positioningof the buoy astern of the delivery ship.5.7.7.2 Streaming Procedures. The OTC will ordercourse and speed for fueling. Stream the rig at 6knots to permit hand streaming. The receiving shipshould be kept well clear of the fueling station while therig is being streamed to avoid possible damage to therig and/or receiving ship should the rig carry away. With the inboard end of the 3-1/2-inch (88.9 mm)support line led to a winch, and the 3-inch (76.2 mm)nylon riding line secured at a point adjacent to the firstinboard hose connection and stopped off at a bitt, streaming can begin. The pickup float is launched andstreamed to the length of the 100-foot (30.4 m) messenger. The hose and support line are lifted by hand andwalked aft until the hose is afloat astern. The hose willthen normally be slowly dragged astern and will runfree until fully streamed. Should the hose fail to easeout, an additional bight can be lifted and walked aft.The light weight of the rig, slow speed of the ship, andshort distance astern when fully streamed will preventthe rig from running away.5-26 ORIGINAL
