<strong>NWP</strong> 4-<strong>01.4</strong>9. Gradually reduce ship’s speed to reduce the bightof hose in the towed rig. When the hose is tendingforward, ease it overboard and allow the bitter endof the easing-out line to run free when the couplingenters the water. Haul in the easing-out line to preventfouling the rig.10. Cut the small stuff stops (Figure 5-21) securing thebights of the messenger, and allow the messengerand hose to be pulled away from the ship’s side.Stops must be cut in succession from hose end tofloat assembly to reduce the hazard of fouling theship’s propulsion or steering gear. The hose andmessenger are veered as the receiving ship dropsastern and clear of the rig.5.7.6.4 Astern Fuel Hose Cleanout. A piggingsystem, developed for cleanout of the astern fuelinghose, can be used in place of the air blowdown. The piggingsystem consists of a polyethylene pig, launchingand receiving stations, associated hardware, and airsupplied from the delivery ship’s service air system.(See Appendix J for details.)Pigging of the astern fueling hose commences afterfueling has been completed and the receiving ship hassignaled the delivery ship to commence blowdown.The pig is manually inserted into the hose at thequick-disconnect coupling located at the launching stationon the delivery ship. A controlled quantity of air isthen admitted to the hose upstream of the pig, whichcauses the pig to be propelled through the hose. As thepig travels through the hose, it forces the fuel ahead of itfrom the hose and into the receiving ship’s fuel tanks.During this period, the pig travels at a relatively constantrate that is controlled by a fixed orifice located inthe air supply line to the hose.The pig travels through the hose until it reaches thestrainer-like pig receiver mounted in the breakable-spoolcoupling at the end of the hose. The pig receiver catchesthe pig, preventing it from being discharged into the receivingship’s fuel tanks. On catching the pig, the receiverautomatically vents the air past the pig and intothe ship’s fuel tanks. Venting continues until the pressurein the hose is brought to atmospheric pressure, atwhich time the astern fueling hose can be disconnectedfrom the receiving ship’s riser. When the hose is disconnectedfrom the riser, the pig is removed and discarded.5.7.6.5 Emergency Breakaway for Astern FuelingRig. The general emergency breakaway proceduresand requirements outlined in paragraphs 2.2.5through 2.2.5.11 apply to astern fueling operationsfrom a merchant tanker.In general, it is the responsibility of the receivingship in an emergency breakaway situation to expedite anormal breakaway or to use a sledge hammer to breakthe A-end of the breakable-spool coupling. In makingthat determination, the receiving ship must weigh theadvantages of recapping the hose prior to releasing therig as opposed to the distinct hazard in creating a voluminousoil spill when the coupling is broken with ahead of liquid in the hose.The delivery ship must be able to stop pumping instantlywhen there is an emergency or when the “Breakaway”order is given. In the event of a situationrequiring emergency breakaway, the danger signal (atleast five short blasts) shall be sounded on the ship’swhistle by the ship initiating the emergency breakawayto alert all ships in the vicinity.5.7.7 Astern Fueling With 2-1/2-Inch (63.5 mm)Hose5.7.7.1 Delivery Ship Rig Assembly and Preparations.Determine the side of the delivery ship fromwhich the hose will be streamed. On this side, lay outand assemble 400 feet (121.9 m) of 2-1/2-inch (63.5mm) hose lengths. Ensure that all hose gaskets are inplace and that the couplings are tight. Fake the 400 feet(121.9 m) of hose on deck as shown in Figure 5-22. Fita hose cap to the bitter end and connect the other end tothe hose from the fuel riser. A 4-inch (101.6 mm) hosemay be used in the delivery ship from the fuel riser tothe transom; however, the 4-inch (101.6 mm) to 2-1/2-inch (63.5 mm) reducer must always be located inboardof the transom when streaming the rig.Attach the special hose clamp (Figure 5-23) to thehose 9 feet (2.7 m) from the bitter end of the hose assembly.Secure a 3-1/2-inch (88.9 mm) braided nylonsupport line with thimble eye to the inboard end of thespecial hose clamp, using a 5/8-inch (15.8 mm) safetyshackle. Marry the support line to the hose at each hosecoupling with at least four turns of 15-thread, and useintermediate 9-thread stops between the hose couplings,as shown in Figure 5-23. (Ensure that stoppersdo not crush or crimp the hose.) Keep the inboard sectionof the hose assembly free to allow for connectingthe hose to the fuel riser.Insert a becket in the nylon support line adjacent tothe last (inboard) marriage, to receive the 3-inch (76.2mm) nylon riding line. Use the nylon riding line to stopoff the hose and the support line, as shown in Figure5-22.5-25 ORIGINAL
