The receiving ship approaches the messengerbuoy from astern and normally maneuvers at aspeed 3 to 4 knots greater than base speed. Theclosure rate (about 300 to 400 feet (91.4 to 121.9m) per minute) is reduced as the buoy comesdown close-aboard, on the port side.2. A 2-1/2-inch (63.5 mm) reeving line messengerwill be laid out from the forward port receivingstation to the bow, outboard of all stanchionsand obstructions.
