<strong>NWP</strong> 4-<strong>01.4</strong>CHAPTER 4Liquid Cargo Transfer — Non-STREAMRigging and Operation4.1 SCOPEAlthough STREAM is the preferred method, a nontensionedmethod may be used for the transfer of fuelproducts between ships. During fuel transfer, lubricatingoil (in drums), industrial gases (in cylinders), water,personnel, and cargo may also be transferred.This chapter details the methods for transferring fuelbetween ships using the nontensioned spanwire, closein,and spanline fuel rigs. Chapter 5 covers proceduresemployed when MSC tankers are used for replenishmentof Navy ships. The nontensioned spanwirerig shall be rigged with wire for all saddle whips, includingthe retrieving saddle, whenever winches can bemade available. Otherwise, double-braided nylon lineis substituted for one or more of the normally wireriggedsaddle whips. For substitution of wire whips, a3-1/2-inch (88.9 mm) circumference double-braidednylon line shall be used. Use a length of 450 feet (137.1m) for the retrieving saddle whip. Use lengths to suitthe individual ship’s installation for the other saddlewhips.Hardware for delivery and receiving stations is listedin Figures 4-11 and 4-12 at the end of the chapter.4.9.1 Rigging the Delivery Station for NontensionedSpanwire Fuel Rig4.9.1.1 Hose Assembly. Hose assembly proceduresfor the nontensioned spanwire fuel rig are thesame as the fuel STREAM rig, as specified in paragraph3.9.1.1, with the exceptions noted herein.The nontensioned spanwire fuel rig is approximately245 feet (74.6 m) long with the following fittings andhose lengths coupled in succession, starting with the inboardend.• Two 35-foot (10.6 m) lengths of hose (inboardlength cut to suit)• Flow-through saddle (No. 3)• Two 35-foot (10.6 m) lengths of hose4-1 ORIGINAL
