Delivering Single Probe to Double-Probe Receiversmale end. When the two ends are joined, the springtensionedsleeve on the outside forces the balls downinto the groove to hold the two ends together. A nipplegasket provides a tight joint when the two endsare joined. A valve, located in the female end, is heldclosed by a heavy spring, and a gasket ensures a tightseal. An operating lever in the male end is linked tothe ring-shaped actuating cam in the male end. Whenthis lever is turned to the open position, the cam isthrust forward, opening the valve in the female end.Because there are both 6-inch (152.4 mm) and 7-inch(177.8 mm) split clamp coupling adapters available forthe female end, the Robb coupling can be used with eitherthe 6-inch (152.4 mm) or 7-inch (177.8 mm) hose.NoteThe Robb coupling quick-trip device (Figure3-11) must be installed on the female end ofthe Robb coupling by the delivery stationprior to sending the rig over.3.7.4.4 Breakable-Spool, NATO Quick-ReleaseCoupling. This coupling, shown in Figure 3-12, isused when fueling NATO ships and MSC ships that arenot equipped with the probe receiver.1. The A-end, rigged by the receiving ship, is acast-iron spool with a standard pipe flange onone end and a slotted flange on the other. Agroove machined around the spool weakens itsufficiently to permit its being broken easily inan emergency by a blow from a sledge hammer.2. The B-end, attached to the end of the hose passedby the delivery ship, is a cast-iron spool with ahose flange on one end and a special floatingringflange with drop bolts on the other. Thefloating-ring flange can be rotated quickly tobring the drop bolts into line with the slots in theA-end. A gasket mounted in the outboard side ofthe B-end ensures an oil-tight fit. A blank flangeis attached to the B-end when the hose is passedto prevent oil from spilling and water from enteringthe hose.3-14 ORIGINAL
