The First Viola Joke Ever?Full Credit here given to Martin Butler who says:I found this in a programme note the other day:"The violinist Francesco Geminiani arrived in London in 1714,one of the many expatriate musicians who settled in England inthe late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries..... As ayoung man Geminiani was appointed head of the orchestra inNaples, where according to English music historian CharlesBurney he was "so wild and unsteady a timist, that instead ofregulating and conducting the band, he threw it intoconfusion", and “was demoted to playing the viola".So there you have it! They felt the same way about viola playersin Italy three hundred years ago”...Final Acknowledgement:I would like to thank the help of my wife, without whose helpthis encyclopedia would have been finished three months earlier.Johnstone Sensible Publications 2011
