Subject VMware Metadata Inconsistency: Q&A
Category Technical Notification
Product Models EonStor Redundant Models
Date June 7, 2011
Document number PN11F065
A number of models in the EonStor family are potentially affected by a VMware metadata
inconsistency issue. In other documents you have received, Infortrend has clarified the
background of this issue and proposed a solution to avoid any problems associated with the
issue.
To provide customers a quick reference to relevant information, Infortrend has prepared this
Q&A document to answer questions you may have regarding this issue. If this Q&A
document, combined with the other documentation we have provided, does not answer all
your questions, please contact Infortrend’s technical support teams.
Q1: From Infortrend’s notification, I understand that the issue involves VMware reporting
metadata inconsistency. However, my VMware systems have not reported this metadata
inconsistency, and my system is operating without any problems. In that case, will it be
necessary to follow the proposed procedures by Infortrend?
A1: Yes, even if VMware has not reported any metadata inconsistency in your
environment, and you’re using your system without any noticeable problems, we still
strongly recommend that you follow the proposed firmware upgrade procedures. The
issue may potentially affect your system in the future, and the proposed firmware upgrade
will prevent that from happening.
Q2: Besides EonStor Redundant models, I’m also using other Infortrend storage
systems. Are they also affected by this issue?
A2: No, only EonStor Redundant models are potentially affected. EonStor Generic
models, as well as systems from other Infortrend product families (EonStor DS, ESVA,
EonNAS), are not affected.
Q&A
Q3: I’m using an EonStor Redundant model that does not have a firmware version 3.64X
or later, but uses an earlier firmware version. Does this issue also affect me?
A3: No, this issue only affects EonStor Redundant models that have a firmware version
3.64X or later. There’s no need to take any action.
Q4: Originally I had not scheduled any firmware upgrades. Can I choose to not upgrade
my firmware and continue to use my existing version?
A4: No, we strongly urge you to upgrade the firmware with the procedure we provided in
order to make sure your EonStor Redundant system will not be affected by the
aforementioned issue.
Q5: Upgrading my firmware will not be a problem. However, I’m wondering whether the
firmware upgrade will be sufficient to guard against any potential problems. Can I skip the
logical drive parity regeneration?
A5: No, as with the firmware upgrade, regenerating logical drive parity is necessary to
make sure your system will not be affected. Please regenerate logical drive parity as
described in the firmware upgrade procedure.
Q6: I’m trying to integrate the firmware upgrade into my schedule. Does Infortrend have
any suggestions as to when the upgrade should be performed?
A6: Yes, we recommend that you upgrade your firmware as soon as practical, but not
later than 90 days following receipt of our notification. Delaying the firmware upgrade
increases the potential for problems associated with the aforementioned issue.
Q7: I understand the importance of logical drive parity regeneration and will conduct
relevant procedures according to Infortrend’s suggestions. Nonetheless, I’m afraid my
applications will suffer a performance impact. Can Infortrend provide any information
about this performance impact?
A7: Logical drive parity regeneration is conducted as a background process, and users
can continue to run their applications while regeneration is conducted. During this
process, you may experience a minor performance impact. For more information, you
can contact Infortrend’s technical support teams. Infortrend sincerely apologizes for any
potential performance impact; we hope you understand that the reason we recommend
this course of action is that you can continue to use your EonStor Redundant system in
the future without any problems.
