Charlie Ruberg ‘07 is making a difference in Panama“Graduating from Oldenburg Academy in 2007, I was directly admitted to the Kelley School of Business at Indiana UniversityBloomington. I am now going into my senior year pursuing a double major in both Economic Consulting and Public PolicyAnalysis. I decided to help bring Global Business Brigades to campus after hearing about the experiences of a good childhoodfriend’s trip to Panama. After graduation next May, I plan on pursuing a career in business development and strategy.”This past year I helped bring a new student organization to the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, GlobalBusiness Brigades. The goal of this organization is to send students to help educate low-income business owners in povertystricken regions of Panama. As a junior studying Business-Economics and Public Policy, I wanted to find a way to put to useall of my hard work and knowledge that I have gained from school. I am studying to be an economic consultant, and onthis trip I had the chance to be an economic consultant and personally work with an entire community. We helped thesevillagers turn their community farm profitable in order to provide economic stability to the entire village using the skillslearned in our college classrooms. Like the famous proverb says: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teacha man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Over my spring break this year I went on a trip to Panama with 15 otherstudents to teach these farmers “how to fish.”We arrived in Panama City late on March 14th and left forthe village early the next morning. We traveled about sixhours west of the city into a remote jungle village deep inthe Veraguas province. There we stayed at a farm and slepton the floor of a school house. Luckily it was still the dryseason so the bugs were not as bad. With that being said,we did see a poisonous snake near the farm and a scorpionin our sleeping quarters. In the mornings we were able tohelp the six farmers with work, such as planting corn byhand and clearing a field by machete for laying irrigationpipe. Then in the afternoons, we helped teach the sixfarmers basic accounting methods to keep track of costsand plan their harvesting seasons. They were very eager tolearn in order to improve the farm, and along with it thecommunity as a whole. The farmers were onlyeducated to the sixthgrade level and hadnever been exposedto even the most basicmethods of recordingrevenues and expenses.“It was a very humbling experience to help them and itwas very obvious that we were directly making a hugedifference in each of their lives.”“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”In fact, these farmers lived off of only $4 per day and almostall supported a family. It was a very humbling experienceto help them and it was very obvious that we were directlymaking a huge difference in each of their lives. The farmwas the only source of income for the entire communityand there is a great potential for sustainable growth due toits location near a river for irrigation during the dry season.Since everything the farmers did was by hand, with ourinvestment fund we donated a simple machine, increasingthe corn harvesting rate by over 3,000%.Continued on page 9ALUMNI NEWS - 5

We were able to go swimming in theriver near the farm and jump from the cliffs into the water 30 feet below. After our four day stay at the village we returned to Panama City for twodays. While there we went on a jungle tour on Lake Gatun of the panamacanal and saw amazing wildlife such as crocodiles and howler monkeys. Wewere even able to go swimming in the canal after eating lunch on a largehouseboat. After this we saw the canal locks and took a walking tour of thecity which was a startling contrast of new booming skyscrapers of CentralAmerican banks and harsh poverty stricken slums only feet away.“It was a great feeling to leave my own comfort zone to experiencethe realities of poverty and directly make a difference in the livesof that community.”Overall the entire trip was a greatexperience that I will never forget. Mybest memory is when before we left thevillage, the president of the farm read us aheartfelt letter of thanks describing all thecontributions we had made in our onlyfour day stay. In that moment it really hitme of how much we impacted the lives ofeveryone in the community. It was a greatfeeling to leave my own comfort zone toexperience the realities of poverty anddirectly make a difference in the lives ofthat community. We are excited to go backon another trip to that same communitythis upcoming December.ALUMNI NEWS - 9
