The Westchester Guardian THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010Page 3COMMUNITYRemembering the 9-11 “Day of Infamy”By Peggy GodfreyThe flag hungconspicuously onthe New RochelleArmory Buildingon September ll andseveral rows of Firemen and officialsstood closely by. Units from the PoliceDepartment and Armed Forces werealso present. The President of the UnitedVeterans of New Rochelle, Peter Parente, set the tone of the evening by saying thiswas “very much a moving event,” and itwas organized to “never forget” the tragicevents of 2001 to the Twin Towers, inPennsylvania and Washington, D.C.Thanking various people who cooperatedto make this remembrance possible,Parente continued by recalling how thisArmory was “used as a staging area forground zero citing that supplies werestored here. He recounted this Armory’suse for the Marine reserves in the late 80’sand 90’s, including his unit’s activation toDesert Storm. With a touch of sadness,Parente mentioned Michael Curtin. atrue hero, who answered the called ofduty on 9-11 only to have it become hislast day on earth. Police and Firemen puttheir “lives on the line every day,” Parentereminded the crowd of several hundredthat had gathered. The next speaker, NewRochelle Mayor Noam Bramson, felthonored to be at this ceremony honoringthe dead. He felt “Americans can not beintimidated and added, “values that havemade America a light of the world,”should be upheld. The keynote speaker, former NewYork State Assemblyman Ronald Tocci, recalled in l941 there was another “dayof infamy” which will never be forgotten.“9-11 will be our day of infamy and neverforgotten.” He said it was “surreal towatch the towers crumble. No one couldimagine that could happen in America.”While a “dark cloud” was present forweeks, Americans handled their wounds“with a sense of patriotism. But as thecloud disappeared, patriotism waned.”The result was “We realized we were notas secure as we once were, a beacon forfreedom. We’ve paid dearly” with 3,000dead. He saluted the heroism displayed bymany, especially on flight 93 which “probablysaved our capital.”The USO Liberty Bells bank planeda musical interlude and several songswere sung. Next Jim Killoran, ExecutiveDirector of Habitat for Humanity, called the evening “a blessed night.” Hesuggested if everyone “worked together, imagine what we can all do.” This prayerservice is being held on holy ground. The last speaker was Fire LieutenantMcLean who thanked the crowd that hadcome “to honor and remember” as well asthose who put their lives on the line and“made the ultimate sacrifice nine yearsago.” Candles were lit and a moment ofsilence followed. Names of people fromthe area and Iona graduates who had diedwere read by John D’Alois who had beenintroduced as a true American. A violinplayed soft music in the background as heread. This was followed by people in theaudience who had a message or commentto make. The bagpiper band played andthe audience sang Amazing Grace as theprogram ended. After the ceremony , Jerri Smith, thewidow of firefighter Kevin Smith, saidher sister had been telling her about thisceremony so she drove 70 miles to attendthis service. Proudly she claimed she hadeight children, two of whom were serving,in the Marines and the Navy. Her familyis “all military” and patriotic.

The Westchester Guardian THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010Page 5GOVERNMENTMayor Marvin’s ColumnBy Mary C. MarvinI compiled alist of the mostcommonly askedquestions that havecome my way asMayor. I thought a global response tosome of them might be helpful to manyother Village residents. I could also titlethis column, “Things I Never Knew UntilI Became Mayor.”Why do the parking enforcement officerswatch drivers cross double yellow lines orengage in other driving infractions and donothing about it?The Parking Enforcement Officersor PEOs are not police officers, nor evenpeace officers and are only authorized andtrained to issue parking tickets and invery limited cases an appearance ticket forminor violations. New York State Vehicleand Traffic Laws can only be enforced bytrained police officers. Traffic stops areactually the most dangerous duty of apolice officer because stops often lead tomore serious charges such as stolen carcases or outstanding criminal warrants, and a PEO has none of the trainingneeded to handle these situations. Why don’t the police patrol the school field? The school field is private propertyand is analogous to one’s own backyard. If the police drive by and see suspiciousactivity while passing the school or anyresidential property, they can enter theproperty and investigate. However, theycannot come on the property uninvitedfor no reason. The responsibility for peaceand order rests with the property ownerand the school like Concordia Collegeand Lawrence Hospital, must supplysecurity if deemed necessary. Why is there a school crossing guard atMasterton Road and not near the libraryor at the intersection of Midland Avenueand Pondfield Road? The Village adheres to Federallypromulgated safety standards recognizedby the State and Federal HighwayAdministration to guide us in all areas oftraffic and pedestrian safety.Crossing guards should only be placedat an intersection that has a high volumeof children, is a significant distance fromthe nearest intersection controlled by atraffic light and the route the childrenwould have to take to reach that trafficlight intersection is without proper sidewalkssuch as the condition along CrowsNest Road. Hence, the need for a guard toMasterton Road.Crossing guards are never to be placedat an intersection controlled by a trafficlight due to the dangerous confusion thatcan be caused when a driver sees perhapsa green light but then a guard wavinga child across the intersection. Thedualing authorities make for a potentiallydangerous situation.Message from the MayorClean-up of the Waterfront BeginsBy Peter SwiderskiWe are pleasedto announce thatthe clean-up of thesouthernmost fourteen acres of the waterfrontwill commence next week. Afterseveral decades of discussion, we willfinally begin the long process of cleaningthe waterfront of pollution and preparingit for eventual reuse. The southern third of the waterfront, owned by Exxon, Chevron and Uhlich, has a considerably lower level of contaminationthan the northern portion, whichis owned by BP Arco. Contaminants aremostly a by-product of the fuels and paintdyes that were stored or manufactured atthe site. It should take about three years todecontaminate this portion of the waterfront.(Work on the northern portion willnot start for a couple of years as we workthrough remediation design with theDEC and BP, and will take longer.)The first step involves placing airmonitoring equipment at two locationsthis week, one at the site and one atRiverview Park on Warburton Avenue,to develop baseline statistics before theclean-up begins. Why aren’t police officers on foot moreoften? The department would very muchlike to have a foot patrol officer both tomeet and greet residents and conservefuel costs. However due to our minimummanning levels, a third officer on a shiftis an extra that has major budget implications. Two cars are on patrol at all times, but these officers cannot park the carand walk because valuable time would belost in an emergency if they had to walkseveral blocks back to their car beforebeing able to respond. Why don’t we think of having speed bumpsor humps, rumble strips or rough roadsplaced throughout the Village to reducespeed?Again, we follow State and Federalstandards on the use of any traffic calmingdevices. Before any speed hump or bumpis installed, a traffic engineering studymust be undertaken to determine both itsnecessity and proper location with verifiabledata on traffic volume, speeds andaccident rates. Incorrectly installed bumpshave opened municipalities to significantliability. For example, a bump too closeto a curve in a road does not provideadequate warning to the unfamiliar driverand can result in increased accidents atthat location.Even after it is determined a speedbump would be helpful, a series of signsmust be placed in both directions andthe bump and the road markings leadingup to it must be brightly painted. Speedbumps that you see without this signageand paint are incorrectly installed, thusNext Monday, crews will mobilizeon the Exxon portion of the site, whichborders the river. Some vegetation overpolluted areas will be removed, and thenExxon’s contractors will jackhammerand remove concrete pads in place at thesite so the DEC can sample the groundbeneath. About 35 truckloads of pollutedsoil will be removed from the site. Thetrucks will only run on weekdays and notduring the school rush hours. This entireprocess should take less than a month. Itwill be monitored by the village and independentengineers.Once Exxon has completed this firstphase of remediation, Chevron will thenclean their portion of the site. (We don’tyet have a time line for that work but willshare it with you when we do.) Next year, exposing a municipality to additionalliability. As for rumble strips or roughing ofthe road, there is no study that has proventhey are an effective traffic calming device. Also the noise made by the autos crossingthese rough spots is extremely loud andincessant to neighboring dwellings. Can construction projects be operating onthe weekends in the Village? If the particular activity required abuilding permit from the Village, theterms of the permit allow work to be donefrom 8AM to 6PM on weekdays only. Ifthe activity is one that a permit was notrequired, for example painting a house, work can be done on weekends. However, even work acceptable to do on weekendsmust respect the Village’s noise ordinanceand not create an undue disturbance.Villagers can call the police departmentwith any noise concerns. Why don’t we employ a “no loitering” lawto discourage the large groups of teens fromcongregating at various locations in theVillage?Simply congregating is not loiteringaccording to the New York State PenalLaw. Loitering is only when someoneremains or wanders about a public placefor the purpose of begging, gambling orsoliciting or engaging in sexual conduct. However, in recent weeks we have issued88 tickets, many for public disturbanceviolations under our noise ordinance.Mary C. Marvin is the Mayor of the Villageof Bronxville.Exxon will begin “bioremediation” of theremaining pollution using bacteria nativeto the soil, prodded to bloom in greatquantity, to consume the remaining volatilechemicals over a two-three year period. We are grateful to the NY Departmentof Environmental Conservation for itsefforts on the waterfront, our fire departmentfor its supervision, our municipalemployees for their work all through theprocess, my colleague Trustee Quinlanwho has been instrumental in proddingforth activity, and, not least, Exxon andChevron for living up to their obligationsand carrying through on the clean up.This is, indeed, a historic momentfor Hastings: we can begin to visualize awaterfront one day open to all residents.Peter Swiderski is the mayor of the Village ofHastings-on-Hudson.

Page 6 The Westchester Guardian THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010Ed Koch Movie ReviewsBy Edward I. KochMovie Review: “Heartbreaker” (+)September 13, 2010French, frothy and frolics galore with a little slapstick andshtick thrown in for additional humor. There are no belly laughsin the flick, but there are plenty of smiling faces in the audience. The movie even has an old Hollywood ending which I haven’tseen for years – two lovers run toward one another for what lookslike a kilometer. (0.6 miles.)The opening scenes take place in Morocco and the closingones in Monaco. The two principal actors, whom I have neverseen perform before, provide very skillful and amusing moments.Alex (Romain Duris) is a professional lover (not a gigolo)usually hired by families to end a romantic relationship in whichtheir daughter is involved. Alex gets the woman to fall in lovewith him but never becomes intimate with them which wouldviolate his contract with the family. He is assisted in his businessby his sister, Melanie (Julie Ferrier), and her husband, Marc(Francois Damiens). The action focuses on Juliette (Vanessa Paradis) who isengaged to Jonathan (Andrew Lincoln), a rich Englishman herfather doesn’t want her to marry. It all becomes complicated whenAlex and Juliette fall in love. The plot is often trite and sometimes perilously close tobecoming a soap opera or sitcom, but it ultimately adds up toa modestly entertaining film. I personally much prefer a Frenchfilm noir to an English trifle dessert. (In French, with Englishsubtitles.)I saw the movie at the IFC Center located on Sixth Avenueand West Third Street.Movie Review: “Animal Kingdom” (+)September 13, 2010Notwithstanding Stephen Holden’s Times review, this movieis not as terrific as it could have been. Holden is smitten by theacting which I agree is good but not as good as he conveys withone exception: the role of Smurf Cody played by Jacki Weaver.Smurf is the mother, grandmother and pillar of strength to afamily of crooks living in Melbourne, Australia. One of her sons,Pope (Ben Mendelsohn), is feared by his brothers and Smurf ’s17-year-old grandson, J Cody (James Frecheville), who lives withhis relatives. J’s mother died from a drug overdose. In a voiceover,he tells the story and fills in the missing facts to completethe narrative. Another of Smurf ’s sons, Darren (Luke Ford), whoappears to be mentally challenged, is not certain about his sexualorientation. The plot involves police corruption and a police executionof a family member with a comparable retaliation. The numberof killings should satisfy anyone’s need or interest in viewingviolence, but they don’t. The movie certainly doesn’t meet thestandards set by Quentin Tarantino in his scripts. Other drawbacksfor me were the low decibel level of the film and the factthat the Australian accents were sometimes difficult to understand. So, while those who like the genre will enjoy this movie, itcould have been much better. I saw the picture at the Landmark’sSunshine Cinema on East Houston Street in Manhattan.

The Westchester Guardian THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010Page 7Ed Koch Movie ReviewsBy Edward I. KochMovie Review: “The American” (+)September 7, 2010George Clooney is a fine actor. To his credit most of his films,in which he plays the same role over and over, have been verysuccessful. The most recent example was “Up In The Air,” whichwas a light, romantic box office hit.“The American” is a morose, silent, and slow-moving picturethat includes full frontal female nudity. Everyone in this movie iseither extremely beautiful or very handsome. Indeed a prostitute,Clara (Violante Placido), is absolutely off the charts in beauty. Inone water scene she reminded me of Hedy Lamarr when she firstcame on the Hollywood scene so many years ago.George Clooney, who goes by several names in this film, mostly Jack, is an assassin. When we meet him early on, he is inSweden with another beauty, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten), where amurder takes place. Jack, who has to flee for his life, is directed byhis handler, Pavel (Johan Leysen), to go to Italy. He ends up ina small mountain town, Abruzzo, 100 miles northeast of Rome. The scenes of Italy – villages, highways, mountains and localpeople -- are gorgeously photographed.Although this is one of the slowest paced films that I canrecall seeing in a long time, and nothing in it is clearly stated, itis well worth watching and figuring out what is happening. I sawit at the AMC Loews Kips Bay Cinema on Second Avenue at31st Street.Henry Stern said: “This was a movie about assassins, so asyou can imagine there was a substantial body count. The photographywas beautiful and the characters were enigmatic. If therewere an Oscar for the movie with the fewest spoken words, ‘TheAmerican’ might win it. The best parts of the film were the viewsof rural Italy and its mountains, which look as they did centuriesago, except for the cars and guns. Consider the movie a travelogue;from your seat you can admire the scenery and observethe people, especially the priest, without the danger of freezingor being shot. Of course you would miss the sex with beautifulItalian women, but you can’t do that from Kips Bay.”Visit the Mayor at the Movies website to view and read MrKoch’s archive chock full of reviewsLet me know your thoughts at eikoch@bryancave.com.The Honorable Edward Irving Koch served New York City as its105th Mayor from 1978 to 1989.

The Westchester Guardian THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010Page 13POLITICSCurrent CommentA Redundant Choice, A Wasted Opportunityby Larry M. Elkin, CPA, CFP®President Obama could have sent anexciting message to the business communitylast week by choosing, as his topeconomic guru, someone with a deepunderstanding of how the private sectorworks.Instead, Obama looked no furtherthan his own inner circle to selectAustan Goolsbee to chair the Council ofEconomic Advisers. The president is, of course, entitled toseek advice from anyone he wants. Anypresident wants to lean on somebody hetrusts and respects. In announcing theappointment at a press conference Friday,Obama called Goolsbee “one of the finesteconomists in the country,” and said hehad complete confidence in Goolsbee’sability to do the job. What troubles me is the suspicion thatif the two men simply traded places – if itwere Obama’s job to advise Goolsbee oneconomic matters – the president wouldgive the same advice he can expect to getfrom Goolsbee. Rather than opening thepresident’s mind to new ideas and alternativeapproaches, or even just presentingcontrasting opinions in terms the presidentcan readily understand, Goolsbeecan be counted upon to reinforce the chiefexecutive’s existing beliefs and biases. The two have a longstanding andclose professional relationship. Goolsbeewas Obama’s economic spokesman inthe 2008 presidential campaign, and hasknown him since his 2004 run for the U.S.Senate. Although they didn’t meet there, the two men overlapped in their timesteaching at the University of Chicago, from which Goolsbee is currently onleave. Though the university is betterknown for its conservative economists,Goolsbee himself is considered a liberal. And Goolsbee already is a memberof the CEA. This means his promotionto chair the council will not requireanother round of congressional confirmation, which the administration probablysees as a bonus. Jack Lew is still awaitingconfirmation as Obama’s budget directorto replace Peter Orszag, who left the postin July. The Obama economic team is stuffedwith academics – like Goolsbee, LawrenceSummers and Christina Romer, theUC-Berkeley economist whom Goolsbeewill replace as head of the CEA – andby technocrats, like Treasury SecretaryTimothy Geithner. The president’s ownprofessional experience seems to makehim most comfortable with people fromthat milieu.Experts with a private-industry backgroundare conspicuously absent at theadministration’s high levels. This mayaccount for the president’s unfortunatetendency to diagnose “greed” and otherevils in those who disagree with himand for his apparently genuinely surprisewhen business executives respond lessthan enthusiastically to his initiatives, including but not limited to the healthcare overhaul.Of course, most private economistswork for financial firms, which may beone reason the president shuns them. After years of demonizing “Wall Street”and blaming that ancient New Yorkright-of-way, together with Republicans, for all the country’s ills, Obama may lackthe desire or the political courage to letthe enemy’s camel get a nose inside theadministration’s economic tent.Whatever his reasons, Obama hassignaled that he plans to forge aheadwith his current approach by selectingGoolsbee. As Obama himself said in hisrecent speech in Ohio, the country should“keep moving forward with policies thatare slowly pulling us out.”And, in an election year in which heand the president never seem to agree onanything, House Minority Leader JohnBoehner, R-Ohio, said much the samething when he panned the Goolsbeenomination. “Unfortunately, the appointmentof Austan Goolsbee to be thepresident’s chief economist represents acommitment to more of the same failed’stimulus’ policies,” the would-be Housespeaker said Friday. The president’s selection of Goolsbeeis business as usual in Washington. That’s too bad. Page 14 The Westchester Guardian THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010ED KOCH COMMENTARYTolerance Must Be a Two-Way StreetBy Edward I. KochWhat should we do to deal withpeople like Pastor Terry Jones whothreaten to burn the Koran?Having the President and othermembers of the administrationpublicly and privately plead withthem, as was the case with Jones,is foolish and, indeed, counterproductive.Never reward bad behavior. When this current dingbat Jones isout of the limelight, we can be surethere are others who are waiting tostep into his shoes and get telephonecalls from the White House and thePentagon. Then there are the talking headsin the media. Last week on MSNBC’searly morning show, “Morning Joe,”I heard the guests propose thatthe President do whatever it takes, legal or not, to shut the pastor upor remove him from the scene. Onespeaker, Pat Buchanan, proposed thatPresident Obama do what PresidentTruman did to a steel company during theWorld War II era – remove the company’spresident during a strike and take over thecompany. Buchanan added, in effect, sowhat if a court two years later finds thatthe action was illegal and sets it aside – asit did. After all, he conveyed, the emergencyhad been dealt with. Wrong. ThePresident should not knowingly violate thelaw to establish leadership or anything else.I suggest that the President call theleaders of Muslim countries and askthem to explain to their people that inthe United States, we truly have freespeech and that burning revered objectssuch as the flag is an act of free speech.Further, President Obama should bringto their attention that, although theU.S. population is 70 percent Christian,Christians do not riot when someonecommits an act of sacrilege or blasphemy. For example, when one artist placeda crucifix in a vat of urine and anothersplattered a painting of Mary, Motherof Jesus, with elephant dung, there werepeaceful protests and boycotts, but noviolence against the artists or thosepresenting the art to the public. Then, I suggest the President proclaima day of meditation and teaching respectfor all religions and with his Cabinetand the clergy of the major religions --Christianity, Judaism and Islam -- makea pilgrimage to a church, synagogue andmosque in Washington, D.C., or hold ajoint event. As the President has often said, we arenot at war with Islam. The vast majorityof Muslims are decent people who meanus no harm. But we should not be afraidto call Islamic terrorists and all otherterrorists by their rightful names, whichhis administration regrettably is unwillingto do, whether out of fear or misguidednotions of political correctness.Just as it is important for thePresident and other political and religiousleaders throughout the nation to standup, speak out and fight the ugly face ofhate, whether it be directed at Muslims,Christians, Jews, women, blacks, homosexuals, etc., it is incumbent on Muslimpolitical and religious leaders to denouncefellow Muslims who kill or support thekilling of other Muslims and Westernersin the name of Islam. There are significantnumbers of Muslims who still applaudthe terrorist act of 9/11 and the deathsof near 3,000 innocent people, and revereal-Qaeda and bin Laden. We also cannot accept discriminatoryand repressive practices being carried outin parts of the Islamic world in the nameof Islam or Islamic law ( Sharia). Witness, for example, the recent death sentenceby stoning carried out on a couple inAfghanistan. A New York Times article ofAugust 16th reported:Witness also the denial of an educationto girls in a number of Islamiccountries, with the horror magnified bythe use of poison gas in Afghanistan inan effort to close girls’ schools. The Timesof August 31st reported, “Blood tests haveconfirmed that a mysterious series of casesof mass sickness at girls’ schools across thecountry over the last two years were causedby a powerful poison gas, an Afghan officialsaid Tuesday…But he emphasized that howthe gas was delivered — and even whetherthe poisonings were deliberate — remained amystery…Many local officials had dismissedthe cases as episodes of mass hysteria provokedby acid and arson attacks on schoolgirls byTaliban fighters and others who objected totheir education.”Of course, religions like Judaismand Christianity which are thousands ofyears old, at one time engaged inoutrageous actions which would bedeplored today. For example, theconcept of an eye for an eye wasgiven up eons ago in the Jewish andChristian world. Not so in someMuslim countries. Recently, asreported in The Times of August19th, in Saudi Arabia, the literalconcept of an eye for an eye wasinvoked. The article reported, “ASaudi Arabian judge has asked severalhospitals in the country whether theycould damage a man’s spinal cord aspunishment for his attacking anotherman with a cleaver and paralyzinghim, the brother of the victim saidThursday.”We also cannot accept that anact of blasphemy permits an Islamiccourt or member of the clergy toissue a death warrant, directing allMuslims to kill the blasphemer. That has happened on several occasions, the most prominent being thedeath sentence imposed on the writerSalman Rushdie, who has needed theprotection of British law enforcementauthorities ever since. A more recentexample is the death warrant issued byIslamic clergy at a Danish cartoonist wholampooned a number of religious figures, including Mohammed. Riots and deathsoccurred in Muslim countries because ofthe publication of the cartoons. Probablyout of fear of the repercussions, the greatNew York Times refused to republish thecartoons. Did Muslim leaders and clergydenounce the worldwide Muslim reaction?I believe not. These and many other issues mustbe addressed by the American-Muslimcommunity and Muslims throughoutthe world. The U.S. is not at war withIslam. Page 16 The Westchester Guardian THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010Shifting GearsSmart ForTwo: When Half a Car Is Still a LotBy Roger WitherspoonIt was a small parking spot, even byNew York City standards. The man walking his Scottie pausedand looked, with obvious incredulity, as Idrove the SmartForTwo into the gap with room tospare. He walked around the car twice, stopping at one point to hold out botharms and noting his wingspan was aboutthe length of the vehicle.“How fast can this thing go?” heasked.“The top speed is 90 miles per hour,” Isaid. “And I’ve had it at about 85 miles anhour going uphill on the highway.”“Really?” he asked, quizzically. “Whatkind of engine fits into that little thing?“It’s got a three cylinder enginepushing about 70 horsepower,” was theanswer.the Smart ForTwo, which is designed forone main purpose – commuting aroundthe city. Which means the shelf behindthe front seats has enough room for abriefcase, some groceries, or an instrument– though not a bass fiddle – and littleelse. Despite its diminutive size, however, the front seats are more than adequatefor a six and a half foot tall, 350 poundpassenger whose legs were stretched out,not doubled around his chin. The Smart is not, however, a traditionallydesigned sedan which had anunfortunate encounter with a buzz saw.Its style can best be described as perky, with a painted on curve around the doorswhich resembles a rolling smile. As mightbe expected, the three-cylinder vehicleis slow to accelerate, taking almost 13seconds to go from zero to 60 miles perFrench-German bordertown of Hambach. In theUS, it is solely distributed by the PenskeAutomotive Group and sold by Smartdealers. Some of these are affiliated withexisting Mercedes dealerships. The engine is in the rear and is matedto a five speed, automatic transmissionwith an electronic manual mode operatedby paddle shifts behind the leatherwould leisurely drive acrossthe country. It is comfortableenough for the trip, but there is no roomfor your luggage. But if you want a car justto get around town or get you to and fromwork, it might be a smart car to look into.2010 Smart ForTwoMSRP: $13,990EPA Mileage: 33 MPG City;41 MPG HighwayPerformance / Safety:Top Speed: 90 MPH0 – 60 MPH 12.8 Seconds1.0-Liter, 3-cylinder, aluminum engineproducing 70 horsepower and 68 pound/feet of torque; 5-speed automatic transmissionwith electronic manual mode withpaddle shifts; lower wishbone, McPhersonstrut, front suspension; DeDion axel, coilspring rear suspension; disc brakes; electronicstability and traction control; rackand pinion steering; 15-inch aluminumwheels, driver and passenger airbags, head/thorax side airbags.Interior / Comfort:Tilt, leather wrapped, 3-spoke sportssteering wheel with shift paddles; AM/FM radio; 6-disc CD player; MP3and iPod connections; 2-speaker andsubwoofer sound system; heated seats;fold flat passenger seat; roll-back softroof; removable roof rails.Wm. Roger Witherspoon’s career hasbeen in the news business, working as afull time reporter, editor, columnist, orproducer for a variety of media companiesincluding newspapers (The Record, N.J.;Star Ledger, N.J.; NY Daily News; AtlantaConstitution; Dallas Times Herald;Journal News (N.Y.); Westchester Herald(N.Y.); and Yonkers Tribune; television (CNN, KNBC and NBC Network); andradio (WCBN, MI.).“Three cylinders? Seventy horse? That’s just half an engine,” he snorted.“Well, yeah,” I replied. “But look at it.It’s only half a car. Half an engine worksjust fine.”And so it goes for the Smart ForTwo,the ultimate urban vehicle. The $14,000car was designed to comfortably hold twolarge people and little else. As an exampleof the scale, the Smart ForTwo is just 106inches long, which is just a shade overeight feet, and weighs 1,808 pounds. Thespeedy Mini Cooper S, with a 185-horsepower,four cylinder engine and a topspeed of 138 miles per hour, is 146.2inches long, or just over 12 feet. Themore staid Honda Civic Coupe, with a140-horsepower, four-cylinder engine, is175.5 inches, or about 14.5 feet. In short, you can fit two Smart ForTwo cars in thestandard parking space. But the Civic and Mini are intendedto be full time, go everywhere cars withadequate trunk space for extendedgetaways. There is a different mission forhour. But once it gets rolling, it has nottrouble keeping ahead of the normalhighway pack. And in city driving, wherespeed is impossible anyway, the maneuverabilityof the little Smart is an asset. In addition, the car has an EPA rating of33 miles per gallon in city driving, and 41miles per gallon on the highway. On city streets, motorists and pedestriansdo a double take when the see thesporty half-car. On the highway, somemotorists find it hard to accept the factof being passed by something little biggerthan a colorful riding lawn mower. Amotorist in a Mercedes E-350 was startledwhen the Smart passed him at 85miles an hour, and immediately changedlanes to follow. When I exited at a gasstop he pulled up alongside and yelled“what is that thing and who makes it?”“It’s a Smart ForTwo,” I said. “And it’smade by the same guys who make yours.”Smart is a division of MercedesBenz, with German precision engineering, though it is assembled in thewrapped steering wheel. The PassionCoupe model is a two part convertible. Atthe touch of a button, the soft top can rollback along a set of roof side rails. It can beopened or closed while at full speed withno problems.Of, if one wants a completely convertiblelook, the roof rails over the windowspop out at the touch of a button and storein special slots in the trunk door. If theweather turns ugly, you will have to pullover to reinsert the rails, but the processtakes seconds. And the car comes withfog lights for the road, and heated seats tokeep you comfortable.Inside, the Smart is not barren. It haspower windows and there is an option fora factory installed navigation system. It hasjust AM/FM and no satellite radio, butthere is a six-disc CD player and jack inputfor an MP3 or iPod. There are only twospeakers and a sub woofer, but that is morethan enough for the small passenger cabin. The Smart ForTwo is not the car you
