TOPIC 13: MANNERS OF TRAVELLING:One of the many blessings of Allah to Prophet Sulaiman was that he had controlover the wind. He would sit on his carpet and command the wind to take himwherever he wanted to goOnce when Prophet Sulaiman on his carpet was floating through the air beingcarried by the wind, a pious man saw him and said "Glory be to He, who hassubjected this to Sulaiman."Allah liked this praise so much that he sent an angel to Prophet Sulaimantelling him that a certain person had praised Him in such a beautiful mannerand pleased Him greatly.Prophet Sulaiman turned back and went to the man to ask him what he hadsaid, and the man told him.Allah says in the Holy Qur'an,"….Glory be to Him who subjected these to us,because we were not able to do so ourselves."The above Ayat tells us that Glory belongs to Him who has allowed for us tohave power over certain things and without this blessing we would not be ableto. This is why it is recommended to say this Ayat before travelling, as it isdue to the blessings of Allah that we have such wonderful means oftravel.Other things recommended to do before travelling are:- Take out Sadqa- Walk under the Qur'an as you are leaving you house.- Carry ½ of Sura Ikhlas, with the other half left at home (We are told thatthese two halves will come together again).- Recite the above ayat from the Holy Qur'anWhen we go on a journey, we usually take with us something calledImam Zaamin – which is some money tied in a cloth. This tradition probably started during the time of our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar-Ridha (A), when people wanted to carry the coins because it had the Imam’sname on it.Akhlaq Page 4.31 www.madressa.net

A STORY ABOUT IMAM ALI AR_RIDHA (A) – IMAM ZAAMIN:The king at the time of our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) was MamoonRashid son of Haroon Rashid.Mamoon Rashid had forced Imam Ar Ridha (A) to take the position of his heirapparent (i.e. Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) was supposed to take over as king afterMamoon Rashid); because Mamoon wanted to be accepted by the Shias.Although Imam (A) did not want to take this position, he said yes and thenmade full use of it to preach Islam openly. To show to the people how much he thought of Imam (A), Mamoon Rashidhad new coins made with Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A)’s name on it.EACH IMAM (A) IS REMEMBERED FOR A SPECIFIC THING: E.G.:- We remember and ask our 4 th Imam (A) to pray on our behalf when weare ill.- We remember and ask our 6 th Imam (A) to pray on our behalf for ourdaily requirements.- And in the same way, we ask our 8 th Imam (A) to pray that our journeyis goes well and that we return safely to our homes. Our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) is also called as Imam-e-Zaamin.When Muslims go on journeys they take with them something called Imam-e-Zaamin (A). Zaamin means "The Guarantor".One day, when Imam Ar Ridha (A) was on a journey, from Madina to Marw),while in a jungle, he came across a hunter, who was about to kill a deer. The deer was trying to get away and when she saw Imam Ar Ridha (A), shesaid something to him.Our 8 th Imam (A) asked the hunter to free the deer so that she could go andfeed her little baby deers who were very hungry.Imam (A) also told the hunter that once the deer had fedher babies she would come back. The hunter allowed thedeer to go because Imam (A) had told him to, but he didnot think the deer will come back.Imam (A) waited with the hunter until the deer returnedwith her young ones. The hunter was amazed on witnessing this miraculous event and he set thedeer free as a mark of respect for Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A). It was after thishistorical event that our 8 th Imam (A) became known as Imam-e-Zaamin (A)Akhlaq Page 4.32 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 14: HASTEHaste means to do something in such a hurry that you are not thinking as clearly asyou could do. When you are hasty, then the chances are that you will makemistakes. If you take your time, and do things at a steady pace, then you will have a chance tothink about what you are doing, and so you will do it properly. But when you are in arush, then your mind is working very fast, and you might forget something, which willcause a lot of problems later on.There is a saying in English, that "Haste is waste."This means that if you rush something, then you may forget a small point, which willcause you even more bother than if you took your time and did the job properly in thefirst place. One of the most important things which you should never rush is your prayers. If youhasten your prayers, then you will not be paying attention to Allah, and this showsthat you are ungrateful. Hurrying prayers also means that you will not gain as muchbenefit from it.Always take your time to do things. Think before you act. Do not take so much timethat you don't get anything done, but at the same time do not be so hasty that youforget something, and then have to do it all again. The main thing that you SHOULD makehaste in, is rushing to say prayers on time,or Namaze Jamaat. If you hear Adhaan, then you should rush to join the prayers. What should you do if:1. You are in the middle of yourprayers, and your cousins comehome to play.2. You are doing your homework in your room, and you know that the FA CupFinal is going to come on television in 10 minutes.3. You are eating your food at the table, with your family, and your friend calls onyou to play. What would a hasty person do in the above, and what could the results be.What would a hasty person do in the above?Akhlaq Page 5.18 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 4: RESPECT TO PARENTSRespect means to listen someone, and have regards for them. It also means to thinkthat someone is important, and pay attention to them without making faces or feelingbad.Allah explains in Qur'an (2:83) to Obey Him and respect our parents. This showshow important it is to listen and obey the wishes of your parents. There is a hadith that"Heaven lies under the feet of your mother."This means that a person who pleases his mother, and makes her satisfied with him, will find heavenmuch easier to get to.Our Holy Prophet (S) explains thatWhomsoever displeases their parents, their Ibadaat (prayers) are not accepted. This hadith tells us that Allah will not accept a person'sprayers, if that same person displeases his parents.Since one of Allah's greatest commands is to obey ourparents, how can we go against that?Children brought up in a western society do not seerespect shown to parents around them. After marriage,it is normal to leave parents alone and send them to oldpeoples' homes.Islam tells us that this is not the right thing to do. Oneshould always help their parents, and never leave themalone in hardship or trouble. When you wake up in the morning, one of the first things you should do is to go andsay "Salamun Alaykum" to your parents.Duties to Parents1. Never raise your voice to them.2. When they first enter a room, stand up if you are sitting.3. Do not interrupt them when they are speaking.4. Do not correct their mistakes in front of others.Allah loves the person who respects his parents so much, that he is blessed withThawaab.Akhlaq Page 5.8 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 5: THINK THE BEST OF OTHERS:Allah is the only judge as He sees everything and is aware of everything. We have no right to judge other people whether they are Muslims or not.Imam Zainul 'Abideen (A) said:You should think more of a personyounger than you as he has hadless time to do bad deeds. You should think more of a personolder than you as he has hadmore time to do good deeds. You should think more of a personthe same age as you because youdo not know what he has done butyou know exactly what goodand bad you have doneThe above saying teaches us that we should always think the best of others.Prophet Ibrahim was very fond of guests. He knew how much Thawaab onegets for looking after a guest. He liked to invite travellers to his house for food and a bed to sleep in.Every morning Prophet Ibrahim stood by the main road near his house andwaited for travellers to pass so that he could invite them to his house.Once it so happened that no traveller passed on that road for 3 days. Thismade Prophet Ibrahim very sad..Then on the 4 th day an old manpassed along that road. ProphetIbrahim was very happy and invitedthe man to come to his house forsome food. The old man agreed.Akhlaq Page 4.10 www.madressa.net

When they sat down to eat, ProphetIbrahim said "Bismillah" before startingto eat but the old man did not sayanything.Prophet Ibrahim asked the old manwhy he did not begin in the name ofAllah, as it was Allah who hadprovided this food for them. The old man replied that he did notbelieve in Allah, instead heworshipped fire.Prophet Ibrahim was very angry and asked the old man to leave his house atonce. As soon as the old man had gone the angel Jibrael came to Prophet Ibrahimfrom Allah and told him that Allah had been feeding this unbelieving old manfor 70 years.Could Prophet Ibrahim not tolerate him for just one meal?Prophet Ibrahim was very sorry and ran after the old man and persuaded himto return to his house so that they may eat together.Moral:- Do not judge anyone - only Allah can do that.- Everyone has rights whether they be Muslims or non Muslims- Allah loves for you to take care of guests.Akhlaq Page 4.11 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: THINK THE BEST OF OTHERS:Write the saying of Imam Ali Zainul Abideen (A): You should think more ofsomeone:1. Younger than you because:2. Older than you because:3. Same age as you because:Akhlaq Page 4.12 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 6: TO BE MERCIFUL AND TO BE GENTLETo be merciful means to be kind and good.We say that Allah is the MOST Merciful. This means that Allah is the Kindest andalways helps us when we need it.We should always help anybody when they ask. If somebody does something wrongtowards us we should forgive them and be kind towards them, this is what mercifulmeans. It is good to help someone when they ask for it, but it is even better to help someonewho is in difficulty, without them having to ask. Some people have dignity, whichmeans they have self-respect. If they are in a problem, they will not ask since theydo not want people to feel pity for them. It is up to you to keep your eyes open, andsee when people need help.If you can help them, then you should do so. If you cannot help them, then try to findsomeone who can.To be gentle also means to be kind towards somebody. If someone did something you did not like, you should not get angry and shout, butyou should be polite and explain until they understand what they did wrong. How should you behave in the following places:1. You are playing with your friends, and one of them falls down and getshurt. All your friends start laughing.2. You are playing, and someone you do not know falls and gets hurt. Allyour friends start laughing.3. You are on the way to school, and you see a bird which has had itswing broken, what should you do.4. You see a little boy being bullied by others, how should you react?Akhlaq Page 5.10 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 7: TRY AND TRY AGAINAllah says In the Holy Qur'an:"And that there is nothing for man exceptwhat he tried, And that his efforts shall soon be seen,Then shall he be rewarded to the fullest measure"The above Ayat tells us that we will not get anything unless we try to get it.Constant effort is the key to success. If at first you do not succeed then try and try again until you do.You should never give up.And if for some reason you do not succeed even after trying again and againremember you will have earned the Thawaab for all your effort - as Allah haspromised in the Holy Qur'an in the verse written above.Amir Timur was a great Mongolian king, who was well known for his bravery. He had conquered nearly half of the world known at that time. He said hissuccess was all due to an ant, who had taught him never to give up.Once long ago before he had become such a great warrior he was fighting abattle and was losing. He decided to run away and hide himself in the mountains. Here he satquietly, when he noticed an ant working. The ant was carrying a grain of ricemuch bigger than itself. With this grainthe ant was trying to climb a wall. The grain fell, and the ant came down for the grain once again. Again thegrain fell and again the ant went down to get it. The ant tried and tried againnever giving up. The King counted that the ant tried 33 times until it finallysucceeded in taking the grain up the wall.Seeing the effort that the ant put into getting what it wanted the king wentabout collecting his run-away soldiers and rebuilt his army. After this event with the ant the king never gave up in any battle and becamea great warrior.Moral: To succeed in anything you have to try and try again.Akhlaq Page 4.16 www.madressa.net

STORY ABOUT NEVER GIVING UP:A man woke up early in order to go and pray his Fajr(Morning) prayer in the Masjid (Mosque). He got dressed, made his Wudhu and was on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, the man fell and his clothes gotdirty. He got up, brushed himself off, and headed back home.At home, he changed his clothes, made his ablution, and was, again, on hisway to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, hefell again and at the same spot! He, again, got up,brushed himself off and headed home. At homehe, once again, changed his clothes, made hisablution and was on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, he met a man holding alamp. He asked the man of his identity and the man replied "I saw you falltwice on your way to the Masjid, so I brought a lamp so I can light your way."The first man thanked him profoundly and the two were on their way to theMasjid.Once at the Masjid, the first man asked the man with the lamp to come in andpray Fajr with him. The second man refused. The first man asked him acouple more times and, again, the answer was the same. The first man askedhim why he did not wish to come in and pray. The man replied "I am Shaitan (Satan)."The man was shocked at this reply.Shaitan (Satan) went on to explain, "I saw you on your way to the Masjidand it was I who made you fall. When you went home, cleaned yourselfand went back on your way to the Masjid, Allah forgave all of your sins. Imade you fall a second time, and even that did not make you stay home, but rather, you went back on your way to the Masjid. Because of that,Allah forgave all the sins of your family. I was afraid if I made you fallone more time, then Allah will forgive the sins of the people of yourvillage, so I made sure that you reached the Masjid safely."Moral:Do not let Shaitan (Satan) benefit from his actions. Do not put off agood that you intended to do as you never know how much rewardyou might receive from the hardships you encounter while trying toachieve that good.Akhlaq Page 4.18 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 12: NABUWWAT (PROPHETHOOD)Nabuwwat means Prophethood. It calls for the belief in the Prophets sent by Allahfrom time to time to guide the people.Allah sent 124,000 in all.Prophet Adam (A) was the first prophet and Prophet Muhammad (S) was the lastprophet sent by Allah. When Allah created us, it was so that we should worship Him. If he had not sentdown Prophets (A) to guide us, how would we have known what to do to pleaseHim? TOPIC 12: IMAAMAT (SUCCESSORS OF THE PROPHET)Aimmah = Plural of ImamAfter the death of Prophet Muhammad (S) the duty of guiding the Muslims was theresponsibility of the Aimmah (A).Allah chose 12 Aimmah (A).Imam Ali (A) was the first and Imam Mahdi (A) is the last Imam. By the will of Allahhe is still alive today. He is the Imam (A) of our time. One day a man made a very clever machine. Many people found the machineuseful and used it all the time. Before he died, the man taught his student how to fix the machine if it ever gotspoilt. After his death, whenever the people had any questions about theirmachines, they would go to the student, and he would always answer theirquestions.Similarly, although the Prophet (S) had brought all the laws of Islam, after his deaththere needed to be someone who could answer the peoples’ questions. Thesewere the Aimmah (A), who were chosen by Allah to carry on with the Prophet’s (S)work.EXERCISE 12: IMAAMAT:List the names of all our Aimmah in order. How would the boy face his family and friends in themosque? He could not sleep at nights as he worried about everybody finding outabout his stealing. What a strange boy! TOPIC 11: ADAALAT (JUSTICE OF GOD)Adaalat means that Allah is Just. He is not a tyrant. He will reward everybodyaccording to his or her deeds. Those who obey His commands will be awarded aplace in Paradise and those who disobey Him will be sent to Hell.Sometimes we think that Justice means fairness and injustice means unfairness. This is not completely correct. When the word Justice is used for Allah, it means that He keeps a balancebetween the needs of all His creatures.EXERCISE 11: ADAALAT:Whenever we pray to Allah to forgive us for our sins, we are taught to askAllah to judge us through His Mercy and not through His Justice.Discuss it with your teacher, family and friends and write down in your ownwords what you think.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Fiqh Girls Page 5A.26 www.madressa.net

Both men and jinn served him faithfully3. He could order the birds to carry out his commands byspeaking to them in their own language. As a result of these special blessings, Prophet Sulayman's (A) kingdomwas very powerful and many countries were under its control. When the army ofProphet Sulayman (A) marched on a mission, it was an awe-inspiring sight. The Holy Qur'an describes one such episode as follows:Sulayman's army consisting of men, jinn and birds were gathered togetherin his presence in ranks. When they arrived in the valley of the ants, an antsaid (to the others), "O ants, enter your dwellings lest you are crushed bySulayman and his army by mistake." Naml, 27 : 17,18Prophet Sulayman (A) heard the warning of the chief of the ants and asked it to comeforward. He said to it,"Did you think that a Prophet of Allah would ever harm any of His creatures?"The ant replied,"No I did not, but I was worried that when my fellow ants would see the grandeurof your army, they would underestimate their own bounties from Allah andbecome ungrateful. It is for this reason that I asked them to hide out of sight."QUESTION BOXHow did Prophet Sulayman hear and understand what the chief ofthe ants said?Tareekh Page 5.46 www.madressa.net

One day Prophet Sulayman (A) noticed that his messenger bird, Hud Hud (a Hoopoebird) was missing. The Holy Qur'an says:And (Sulayman) inspected the birds and said, "How is it that I cannot see HudHud. Is he absent? I shall certainly punish him severely or slaughter him unlesshe has a good reason (for his absence). Naml, 27 : 20,21It was not long before Hud Hud appeared, saying,"I have been to a country about which you may know nothing. The country isSaba (Sheba) and it is ruled by a woman who has complete control over herpeople. Her throne is especially grand. However, they all worship the sun andhave forsaken Allah."Prophet Sulayman (A) sent a letter to Bilqees, the Queen of Saba, saying,"In the Name ofAllah, theBeneficent theMost Merciful. Donot rebel againstme and cometowards me insubmission toAllah."When Bilqees received the letter, she asked her ministers about their opinion on thematter. They replied that they had powerful armies and they were not afraid to go towar, but the final decision was in her hands.Bilqees wanted to settle the matter peacefully so she sent her messengers to ProphetSulayman (A) with costly gifts and waited for his reaction. When the representatives ofSaba arrived in the kingdom of Prophet Sulayman (A), they were amazed to see thesplendour of his buildings and palace.Prophet Sulayman (A) welcomed them and asked for the reply to his letter. When theypresented him with the gifts, he impatiently put them aside, and told them,"What are these riches? I have been given such bounties from Allah that arepossessed by none. Return to your country and inform your Queen that I amsending such an army towards Saba that no one will be able to withstand."When Bilqees received this message and the report about Prophet Sulayman's (A)power, she decided to submit herself before him and accept his invitation to embraceIslam.Tareekh Page 5.47 www.madressa.net

When Prophet Sulayman (A) learnt that she was coming tohis kingdom, he turned to his people and said,"Who amongst you can bring me the throne of theQueen of Saba before she herself gets here?"One jinn said,"I will bring it before you rise from your place."But Asife Barqiah, who had been taught thespecial Name of Allah by Prophet Sulayman (A),said, according to the Holy Qur'an:Said he who had some knowledge of the Book, "I will bring it to you before youreye blinks", and when he (Sulayman) saw the throne settle beside him, he said,"This is by the Grace of my Lord so that He may test whether I am grateful orungrateful...Naml, 27 : 40(Part)RESEARCH BOXAsife Barqiah is described in the Quran as the one who had someknowledge of the “Book”, which book is the Quran referring to?In preparation for the arrival of Bilqees, Prophet Sulayman (A) had ordered a palace ofglass to be built. The Holy Qur'ansays:She was told, "Enter the palace."; but when she saw itshe thought there was a pool of water and bared herlegs. (Sulayman) said, "Indeed this is but a place ofglass." (She) said, "My Lord! verily I have been unjustto myself. I submit with Sulayman to Allah, the Lordof the worlds." Naml, 27 : 44Bilqees was fooled by the appearance of water and hitched up her dress to her kneesto save it from getting wet. When she realised her mistake, she at once understood thesubtle point that Prophet Sulayman (A) was making to her.He was showing her that things are not always what they seem, and even if the sunshe worshipped was the most powerful force she could see, there was another, morepowerful, Force behind it.Tareekh Page 5.48 www.madressa.net

Since he was dealing with a Prophet, Shaitan requested Allah for powerover Prophet Ayyub's (A) affairs and said,"O Allah, while Ayyub enjoys your blessings he remains grateful to you. But giveme control over his affairs and I will make him turn away from you."Allah was fully aware of the patience and steadfastness of Prophet Ayyub (A), but as atrial for His Prophet and as a lesson for mankind, he granted Shaitan's request.Shaitan came down to earth and caused: the destruction of all Prophet Ayyub's (A) animals His property He killed his children as well. However, Prophet Ayyub (A) turned to Allah with even greater intensity than before. When Shaitan saw his plot defeated, he caused:1.
