The essence of the Srutis, or of theUpanishads, is hard to be understood, seeing that thereare so many commentators, eacH one trying to interpretin his own way. Then the Lord Himself comes, He whois the inspirer of the Srutis, to show us the meaning ofit, as the preacher of Gita, and to-day India wants nothingbetter, the world wants nothing better than that methodof interpretation. It is a wonder that subsequent interpreters of the Scriptures, even commenting upon the Gita,many times could not catch the meaning, many timescould not catch the drift. For what do you find in theGita, and what even in modern commentators ? Onenon-dualistic commentator takes up an Upanishad, thereare so many dualistic passages, and he twists and tortures them into some meaning, and wants to bring themall into his own meaning. If a dualistic commentator comes,there are so many non-dualistic texts which he begins totorture to bring them all round to dualistic meaning ;butyou find in the Gita there is no attempt at torturing anyone of them.
