REALIZATION.If WILL read to you from another of the Upanishads.W This is one of the simplest, but, I think, one of themost poetical. It is called the Katha Upanishad.Some of you, perhaps, have read the translation by SirEdwin Arnold. In our last we saw that the enquiry whichstarted with the origin of the world, and the creation ofthe Universe, failed to obtain a satisfactory answer fromwithout, and how it went inward. And this book psychologically takes up that suggestion, questioning into theinternal man. They were asking who created the externalworld, how it came into being, and so forth, and now thequestion is,what is that in man which makes him live andmove, and what becomes of it when the man dies. Theyhad taken up, as it were, the material substance, and triedto follow it out, and at the best they found a personalGovernor of the Universe, a human beingitmay beimmensely magnified, but yet to all intents and purposes ahuman being. And that cannot be the whole of truth ;at best it can only be partial truth. We see this Universeas human beings, and our God is our human explanationof the Universe.Suppose a cow were philosophical and had religion, itwould have a Cow Universe, and a Cow solution of theproblem, and it would not be necessary that it should seeour God. Suppose cats became philosophers, they wouldsee a Cat Universe and have a cat solution of the problemof the Universe, some Cat ruling the Universe. So we
