"""258 THE COSMOS: THE MACROCOSM.ning. If that is so, take this whole evolutionary series, frdmthe protoplasm at one end to the perfect man at the other. This whole series is one life. In the end we find the perfectman, so in the beginning, it must be the same. Therefore, that protoplasm was the involution of the highest intelligence. You may not see it,but that involved intelligenceis what is uncoiling itself until it becomes manifested inthe most perfect man. That can be perfectly mathematically demonstrated. If the law of conservation of energyis true, you cannot get anything out of a machine until youputit therein first. The work that you get out of an engine is exactly what you have put into it in the formof water and coal, not one hair s breadth more or less. The work I am doing now is just wliat I have put into me,in the shape of air, and food and other things. It is onlya question of change and manifestation. There cannot beadded in the economy of this universe one particle of matter or one foot-pound of force, nor can one particle ofmatter or foot-pound of force be taken out. If that be thecase, what is this intelligence ? If it was not present inthe protoplasm, it must have come all of a sudden, something coming out of nothing, which is absurd. It, therefore, follows absolutely that just as we see in any otherbeing, where it begins there it ends, only sometimes it isinvolved, at other times evolved. The perfect man is theone end of this link the free man, the God-man, who hasgone beyond the laws of nature, transcended everything. No more has he to run through this chain, birth and death ;that man, theChrist-man," as the Christians call him, theBuddha-man," as the Buddhists call him, theFree,"the Yogis call him, that perfect man is the one end, and thateverybody involved was in this very cell of the protoplasm. Now what becomes of this universe ? THE COSMOS: THE MACROCOSM. 259s^e in the end of this universe ? Intelligence, is it not ?The last to come in this universe is intelligence. And asthe last in order of creation, according to the evolutionists, intelligence must also be the Lord of creation, the cause. What is the last idea each man has of this universe ? It isintelligence, the adjustment of part to part, and so forth, the ancient design theory, the display of intelligence. Thisis tht^last to come, we admit with the modern materialists. It is the last in the order of creation. Very good ;butthere when millions of years before man was born, whenthere was no intelligence ;that is to say, there was nomanifested intelligence, but there was unmanifested intelligence ;and the end of this creation is intelligence, man.The beginningis what therefore ? Intelligence. At thebeginning that intelligence becomes involved, and in theend that intelligence gets evolved. The sum- total of theintelligence displayed in the universe must, therefore, bethe involved universal intelligence unfolding itself. Thisuniversal cosmic intelligence is what we call God. Call itby any other name, it is absolutely certain that in the beginning, was that infinite cosmic intelligence. The cosmicintelligence got involved and became fine, and that veryintelligence manifests, evolves itself, until it comes to theperfect man, the the "Christ-man," "Buddha-man." Thenit comes back to its own source. That iswhy all theScriptures say, Him we "In live, and move and have ourbeing."That is why all the Scriptures preach that wecame from God, and go back to God. Do not be frightened by philological terms ;if terms frighten you, you arenot fit to be philosophers. This is the cosmic intelligencewhich the theologians call God.I have been asked many times, why do you usethatold word God ? Because it is the best word to use ; you
