116 IMMORTALITY.the cause, it has gone on evolving, is manifesting itself,becoming grosser. But the question of immortalityis notsettled here still. What have we got ? We get this, tttateverythingin this universe is indestructible. There isnothing new ;there will be nothing new. The same seriesof manifestations are presenting themselves alternately ,like a wheel, coming up and down. All motion in thisuniverse is in the form of waves, successively rising andfalling. Systems after systems are comingout of thefiner forms, evolving themselves, taking the grosser forms,again melting down, as it were, and going back to thefine forms. Again they rise out of that, rising for acertain period and slowly going back to the cause. So withall life. Each manifestation of life iscoming up, and thengoing back again. What goes down? The form. The formbreaks to pieces, but the same form comes up. In onesense the body even is immortal. In one sense bodies andforms even are eternal. How ?Suppose we take a numberof dice, and throw them. Suppose the dice fall in thisratio 6 5 3 4. We take the dice up and throwthem again, and again ;and again ;there must come atime when the same number will fall again ;the samecombination must come. Again let them fall, and thesame combination comes, but after a long while. Noweach particle, each atom, that is in this universe I take forsuch a die, and these are being thrown out, and combined,again and again. This is one combination ;all these formsare before you. Here is the form of a glass, a table, a pitcherof water, all these things. This is one combination ;thenext moment it will all break. But there must come atime when exactly the same combination comes again, whenyou will be here, and this form will be here, this subjectwill be talked, and this pitcher will be here. An infinite
