Lambton Facility UpdateMonday, September 26, 2011On-site Control MeasuresClean Harbors Canada, Inc.’s Lambton facilityexperienced odour complaints from the nearbycommunity and the Company has taken measures toreduce these odours in an effort to ensure that theproblems are minimized in the future. Recenttesting indicates that emissions from the site arewithin the Ministry of the Environment healthstandards. The source of the intermittent odour emanatingfrom the facility is leachate that has pooled at thebase of the active landfill excavation and is storedin leachate ponds. The facility is activelyaddressing this problem by applying additionalodour reagents and neutralizers, covering theleachate pond, and conducting activities duringfavourable meteorological conditions. The Company purchased a specialsurfactant/enzyme combination that emulsified theleachate to eliminate the odours coming from theleachate pond. In addition, a custom made tarp wasinstalled over the pond to further encapsulate theodours.Aggressive efforts are ongoing to significantlyreduce the volume of leachate and leachate surfaceareas before year end. This work includes landfillcapping, stormwater diversion, and modifiedleachate handling practices. A combination of theaforementioned work activities coupled with thecooler seasonal temperatures, will substantiallyreduce the potential for odours over the wintermonths. Our goal is to have this odour issueresolved as quickly as possible.Mitigation measures to reduce off-site odourimpacts to date include:• Since the beginning of summer, on aweeklybasis, the company has added approximatelyone pail (13 litres) of odour suppressing reagentby the name of XP200 to the leachate in thelandfill and the leachate pond areas.• During the month of July, the frequency of XP200 was increased to one pail every Mondaymorning in anticipation of the commencementof weekly landfilling activities. Applicationswere added during the weekdays dependingupon leachate activities or off-site odourcomplaints and every Friday afternoon in orderto provide weekend coverage.• Starting August 7 in response to daily off-siteodour complaints, the frequency was increasedto daily and the daily application amount variedfrom 1 to 3 pails per application.• On August 17 a site visit by ECOLO OdorControl Technologies Inc. was arranged todetermine a site treatment plan to reduce odours.During that site visit ECOLO installed threeportable misters around the south leachate pondin order to suppress the airborne odours. Theproduct used for this application wasAirSolution 9204.• On August 18 four drums of EcoCare 250Ywere ordered. This product is a speciallyformulated concentrated liquid developed tocontrol odours emanating from leachate.• On August 19 two on-site portable mister unitswere placed in locations downwind of the activelandfill area adjacent to the berm in attempt toneutralize the landfill leachate odours.• On August 24 ECOLO came to the site andinstalled and applied the following:4090 Telfer Road • Corunna, Ontario N0N 1G0 • 519.864.1021 • www.cleanharbors.com

Lambton Facility UpdateMonday, September 26, 2011o One drum of BioStreme 222 PondX,a chemical reactant, was addeddirectly into the south leachate pondto reduce odour levels.o An automated 30 nozzle midpressurehydraulic mist system wasinstalled around the leachate ponds. The product used for this system wasAirSolution 9204.• During the week of August 22 Conestoga-Rovers Associates conducted an on-site odourassessment of all odourous sources (e.g. TDU,tank farm, leachate areas, LDR building, etc). Acondensed preliminary report on their findingsis scheduled for September 30, 2011 and thefinal full version is scheduled for November 15,2011.• On August 31 two drums of EcoCare 250Ywere applied to active landfill leachate area.• On September 1 two drums of EcoCare 250Ywere applied to the south leachate pond and theactive landfill leachate area.• On September 7 one drum of BioStreme 222PondX was applied into the south leachate pond.• On September 9, after extensive on-sitelaboratory testing, two drums of Zymeflow wereadded to the south leachate pond.• On September 10 ten additional drums ofZymeflow were added to the south leachatepond and totally neutralized the odours.• On September 10 a custom-made tarp (60 by 60metre) was installed over the south leachatepond to contain any future odours from theneutralized leachate pond.Presently, it appears that the Zymeflow and the tarphave been effective in eliminating the predominantodour source at the south leachate pond. CurrentlyClean Harbors is investigating and testing a numberof other odour control methods for the activelandfill leachate area. These leachate odourcontrols include the following:• Obtaining drums of Paratene D740 for on-sitelaboratory testing. Paratene D740 is acombination of two surfactants and hydrogenperoxide.• On-site there are two drums of Captoban thatwill be undergoing on-site laboratory testing. This product is a combination of a surfactantand a fragrance and is similar to Zyme-Flow.• The company is considering a full-scale sitewide misting system and has requested ECOLOto prepare a budget price, requirements, concept, and time frame for a full site odorcontrol system.• Foam systems have been identified as anotheroption by covering the pond and landfill activeareas to reduce odor. The company iscontacting suppliers to review foam systems fortheir applicability.• The company is reviewing our method ofleachate injection into the incinerator in order tomaximize the amount of our incinerator leachateburn rate.4090 Telfer Road • Corunna, Ontario N0N 1G0 • 519.864.1021 • www.cleanharbors.com
