16 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 5, 2009SAVVY SENIORDear Savvy Senior,Are generic medications as effectiveas brand-name drugs, andf so, why are they so much cheapr? Also, how can I find out whichedicines are available in genericform.Brand-Name BuyerDear Buyer,Generic drugs are just as effectivend safe as their brand-name counerpartsbecause they're virtually theame – except for the price of course.ere's what you should know.Copied drugsApproved by the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA), generic drugscontain the same active ingredients, dosage and quality as their brandnamecounterparts. The only differencesbetween them are the name (genericdrugs are usually called by theirchemical names), shape and color ofthe drug (U.S. trademark laws don'tallow generics to look exactly like thebrand-name drugs), and price (whichis between 30 and 90 percent less).Cost differenceThe reason generic drugs are so muchcheaper is because their manufacturersdon't have the hefty start-up coststhat the original creators of the drugdo. When a pharmaceutical companycreates a new drug, it spends millionsof dollars on the research, developmentand clinical testing phase. Then,if it gets FDA approval, it has to turnaround and spend even more money tomarket the drug to the public, pharmacies, health insurance companiesand doctor's offices. The total cost canrise into the hundreds of millions bythe time the drug is in the hands ofconsumers. In an effort to recoup their investment, the brand-name drug makerscharge a premium price, and are givena 20 year patent protection, whichmeans that no other company canmake or sell the drug during that periodof time. After those twenty years are up,however, other companies can apply tothe FDA to sell generic versions. Butbecause generic manufacturers don'thave the same research, developmentand marketing costs, they can selltheir product much cheaper. Also, oncegeneric drugs are approved, there'sgreater competition, which keeps theprice down. Today, more than half ofall prescriptions are filled with genericdrugs, and according to the CongressionalBudget Office, generic drugssave U.S. consumers an estimated $10billion a year.Look genericSince not all brand-name drugs havegeneric alternatives, the easiest wayto find them is to ask your doctor orpharmacist, or check the FDA onlinedrug catalog at www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda. Betteryet visit www.rxaminer.com, a greatWeb site that lets you easily search forbrand-name drugs and their genericalternatives, if they exist. If they don't,it provides other low-cost alternativemedicine options, if available.2009 genericsEvery year, a number of brand-namedrugs lose their protective patent andgo generic. Among those to watch forin 2009 include the migraine drugImitrex (sumatriptan), ADHD drugAdderall XR (amphetamine), antiseizuredrugs Topamax (topiramate) andLamictal (lamotrigene), allergy drugClarinex (desloratadine), the herpesantiviral drug Valtrex (valacyclovir),GERD drugs Prevacid (lansoprazole)and Aciphex (rabeprazole), and enlargedprostrate drug Flomax (tamsulosin).Shopping tipsMany chains like Wal-Mart, Target,Costco, Kmart, CVS, Walgreens andSafeway offer great deals on manygeneric drugs. Wal-Mart for examplecharges only $4 for a 30-day supplyand $10 for a 90-day supply with no eligibilityrestrictions.
