EXTRUSION LINESLaboratory machines for theprocessing of polymersSmoothing Calender Vario G 168Extraordinarily flexible – unequalled for flexibility of adjustmentThe ultimate pilot size machine for development and low-volume production of all types of film, sheets and laminates used as:Laboratory Smoothing Calender,Chill-Roll System andEmbossing or Laminating UnitFrom polymer to information

Text: Rainer Braxmaier, Bearbeitung: Y.Rebernach obenzurück

Example of a calender lineLaboratory sheet line with extruder, 45 mm diameter x 25 D, slot die 450 mm on a mobile frame, roll unit in 45° position,motor-driven edge cutting unit, take-off rolls, traversing saw, film winder, edge-strip winder and integrated hot watertemperature control units.Configuration Optionsvertical arrangement 45º-arrangement horizontal arrangementpolishing rolls (PVC) polishing rolls (PET, PC) polishing rollshorizontal arrangementChill-roll (Cast-film) polishing, embossing laminating3

SMOOTHING CALENDER VARIO G 168The laboratory extrusion lineThe illustration shows a completeextrusion line for the productionof film and sheets in all knownthermoplastics.ExtruderThe single-screw extruder, 45 mm x30 D, is fitted with a degassing zonefor processing high performancematerials. The interchangeable barrel elementaccommodates dynamic or staticmixing elements.ControlThe microprocessor controller on theextruder enables all parameters to beset, with up to 30 temperature zones, speeds and measurement displays.Coupling to a host computer is viaan interface RS 485.Extruder heightadjustmentMotorized on a central column, thecomplete extruder can be adjusted inheight. This enables easy positioningwhen changing the die position orconverting from mono to co-extrusion.Melt pumpA melt pump, also adjustable inheight, provides constant feed rateswithout pulsation, even at high pressures.Swivel adapterThe continuous adaptation of the dieto the calender at an angle from 0°to 90° is achieved with the swiveladapter moved together with theswivelling die frame.DiesThe range of slot dies available enablesthe production of all types of filmor sheets in single or multi-layer:• dies for films from 10 µm to1000 µm• dies for sheets up to 6 mm• two and three-layer manifold dies• 2 to 7 layer feedblock systemsFrom polymer to information4

The Calender 168/600Roll unitThe main component is the roll group. This consists of a central fixed rollwith upper and lower swivelling rolls. The roll width is either 400 or 600 mm.The rolls are designed with doublewalls for uniform temperature regulationusing cooling water or externaltemperature control units. The surfaceof the rolls is hardened, surface finished, chromium platedand polished. The roll group can be arranged as• a stationary unit to be used on adefined task,• swivelling unit with height adjustmentfor universal application.Gap adjustmenta) A hydraulically operated swivelmovement on the upper andlower rolls provides a rapid safetyopening of 50 mm on each roll.b) Fine adjustment is by mechanicallyadjustable setting elements.DrivesThe three rolls are each driven by anindividual DC-geared motor. The takeoffrolls and the winder each have aseparate DC-drive. This enables finesetting of the optimum speeds.Roller section and take-offA roller section with a length of1200 mm and a pair of rubbercoveredtake-off rolls follow theroll unit.WinderThe winder device is available asa centrally-driven or surface-drivenwinder.ElectroniccontrollerA central microprocessor controllerenables the digital setting anddisplay of all speeds, currents andtemperatures as well as a link toa host computer by an interfaceRS 485.Machine frameThe complete unit is built on a strongsteel frame. The temperature controlunits can be mounted into the frame.5

SMOOTHING CALENDER VARIO G 168Accessories for the calenderA wide range of optional componentsand devices lend variability andadaptability to the calender in pilotplant applications. These include:1. Drives with selectable speedfor use asa) calenderb) cast-film system2. Embossing rolls for producingembossed sheets3. Rubber-covered pressure rollsfor laminating and embossing4. Take-off stations for supportingthe fabrics for lamination5. Edge cutting, alternatively• with blade cutting for film,• with rotating, motor-driven,circular cutter for thick filmsEdge cutting with motor-driven circular blades.6. Edge-strip winder with quickchangespools and traversingdevice7. Corona treatment stationsfor surface treatment, e.g. forpreparation for printing8. Traversing saw for cutting sheetsof up to 6 mm thickness to length;with built-on swarf extractiondevice9. WindersThese are offered in various forms, such as:• surface-driven winder for soft, thin film• centrally driven winder for thickfilm• clamping of the winding shafts viaaxial clamping cones or into hingedbearings• friction winding shafts for narrowfilm stripsTake-off with winder for film or traversing saw for cutting sheet. From polymer to information6

The slot diewithswivel frameThe slot die for film or sheet is theheart of a calender system.Positioning with respect to the rollgap is simplified by a swivel framewhich enables setting from 0° - 90°in 15° steps. The feedblock needed for co-extrusionis mounted on the die and can alsoswivelled. The swivel adapterThe adapter represents the couplingpoint between the extruder and thedie. A swivel adapter is used toprovide free adjustment of the dieat angles from 0° to 90°.The drawing shows the mostcommon variations:• Horizontally arranged die withvertical calender unit• Die and roll unit each in a 45°position• Die vertically above horizontalroll unitThe photograph shows the central part of a sheet line with the last extruder cylinder zone, melt pump –also adjustable in height, swivel adapter, slot die with swivel frame and roll unit in the 45° position.7
