DESCRIPTIONPharmacy technicians, under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a licensed pharmacist, assist in the various activities <strong>of</strong> thepharmacy department. Pharmacy technicians function in accordance with standard written procedures, guidelines,and state and federal regulations.2. QUALIFICATIONSAll pharmacy technicians must possess abilities and a thorough knowledge base, understanding, and level <strong>of</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>iciency to assure adherence to the procedures and objectives <strong>of</strong> UK Healthcare Ambulatory PharmacyServices.2.1 Possess a high school diploma or certificate <strong>of</strong> equivalency.2.2 Completed one year <strong>of</strong> previous work experience (related experience is highly desirable).2.3 Must be able to read, speak, understand and be understood in English.2.4 Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods <strong>of</strong> time.3. RESPONSIBILITES3.1 Obtains and maintains appropriate knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> the UK Healthcare AmbulatoryPharmacy Services. This knowledge includes the values, policies, and procedures <strong>of</strong> the Chandler RetailPharmacy related practice settings.3.2 Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> the duties and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the positionto which he/she is assigned including:3.2.1 Filling prescriptions.3.2.2 Operating the point-<strong>of</strong>-sale system.3.2.3 Answering telephone calls / screening calls.3.2.4 Collecting patient’s personal information from the patient, family member or staff member, inperson, over the phone or via the electronic health record.3.2.5 Educate patients on and facilitate enrollment in the UK Healthcare Ambulatory PharmacyServices’ mail order program.3.2.6 Repackaging, labeling, manufacturing, handling, and storing pharmaceuticals.3.2.7 Entering accurate patient insurance and prescription information into the UK Healthcarecomputerized systems, PM (Health Quest) and RX3000, using the correct UK medical recordnumber.3.2.8 Processing charges for prescriptions, both adjudicated insurance claims and billing to UK internalaccounts.3.2.9 Appropriately uses and maintains equipment and facilities.3.2.10 Preparing prescription products and dosage forms for geriatric, adult, pediatric,


and neonatal patients , both commercial products and compounded products.3.2.11 Collecting prescriptions and delivering medication orders to and from individual patient roomsacross the UK Medical Center campus.3.2.12 Demonstrates good time management skills.3.3 Uses and understands appropriate pharmaceutical-medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols common toprescribing and dispensing.3.4 Maintains a working knowledge <strong>of</strong> the general chemical and physical properties <strong>of</strong> drugs handled in thepharmacy department. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying medications that are light sensitive,requires refrigeration, are caustic, or poisonous. Is able to utilize reference books and on-line resources tolocate and apply stability information or material safety data sheets.3.5 Carries out the calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solutions preparation usingweight and volume equivalents in both the metric and apothecary systems.3.6 Performs the essential functions related to drug purchasing and inventory control.3.7 Maintains a working knowledge <strong>of</strong> all aspects <strong>of</strong> pharmacy services identified below:3.7.1 Medical terminology and abbreviation3.7.2 Drug names and classification3.7.3 Medication order and prescription interpretation3.7.4 Prescription computer order entry and billing.3.7.5 Preparing prescription products and dosage forms for geriatric, adult, pediatric,and neonatal patients , both commercial products and compounded products.3.7.6 Pharmaceutical calculations3.7.7 Federal and State Laws governing the practice <strong>of</strong> pharmacy and the distribution <strong>of</strong> controlled andnon-controlled substances3.7.8 Medication error prevention methods3.8 Labels and packages drug products appropriately.3.9 Performs various functions associated with an outpatient pharmacy. This includes, but is not limited to:3.9.1 Entry <strong>of</strong> prescriptions into the pharmacy computerized records including appropriate billing.3.9.2 Repackaging, labeling, manufacturing, handling, and storing pharmaceuticals.3.9.3 Delivery <strong>of</strong> prescription orders and completion <strong>of</strong> dispensing records.3.9.4 Collecting payments and recording payments through the point-<strong>of</strong> sale system.3.10 Participates in the training and/or orientation <strong>of</strong> new pharmacy employees.3.11 Interacts effectively with other members <strong>of</strong> the health care team on a regular basis. Maintainsattentiveness to the rights and respect <strong>of</strong> patients. Maintains confidentiality <strong>of</strong> all patient information.3.12 Operates automated technology (telephone, computers, etc.) in accordance to policy, procedures andmanufacturing instructions.3.13 Performs the essential functions related to opening and closing <strong>of</strong> the pharmacy.3.<strong>14</strong> Participates in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kentucky</strong>'s staff development program - Performance Evaluation (PE)3.<strong>14</strong>.1 Works to meet departmental, pr<strong>of</strong>essional, and personal goals.3.<strong>14</strong>.2 Understands major job responsibilities (MJRs).Drug DistributionCustomer ServiceAttendanceQuality Improvement3.<strong>14</strong>.3 Understands performance factors/behaviors that help meet MJRs.Key Factors: Sense <strong>of</strong> UrgencyTeamworkAccountabilityInnovationRespect
