Proudly stated, I was responsible for originating and organizing theFriends of the Library. In brief, with the assistance of The American Library Association, and advice from Marcia Wiswell of the Lynnfield Public Library, I recruited PollyCarter and Winnie Hodges to help in organizing the Friends. In brief, the Friends of the Library was founded to raise funds to provide the librarywith equipment and programs that would benefit the community, but are not covered bythe library budget. It was on the evening of Friday, May 11, 1971, the Friends of the Nahant Librarywas officially organized and launched. The original officers and members of the Friends of the Library, I served as President,Winnie Hodges, Vice President, Phyllis Wooden, Secretary, Barbara Kostick,Treasurer, and Jean Smith, Membership Chairperson. The individuals, who attended that historic meeting to help establish The Friends ofthe Library: Marilyn Barisano, Anne Bertorelli, Barbara Brownlie, Ruth Brownell,Carmen Burell, Edith Bruce, Polly Carter, Claire Collins, Anne Cote, Mary and HoratioCowan, Edna Doran, Barbara Duggan, Mary Ann Evaul, Conover Fitch, PatriciaFitzgerald, Peggy Hinricks, Carmel Langin, Sarah Larson, Harriet Magro, BerniceMcLaughlin, Sarah McLaughlin, Mary Morgan, Annie Murphy, Trinity Pappas, MargaretSnell and James Wong. Bless her!Truth About Mother’s DayThe charming Janet Benkert, of Maolis Road, reminds us of the origin of Mother’sDay. In brief, it originated in 1907 in Grafton, West Virginia. Through the efforts of MissAnna M. Jarvis, she arranged a special church service marking the second anniversaryof her mother’s death in 1905. She requested that those attending the service wear whitecarnations, which she supplied. The first formal observances of Mother’s Day were heldin Grafton and in Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. The custom spread rapidly until, by1911, every state in the Union was participating in Mother’s Day exercises, held on thesecond Sunday in May.The electrifying Ed Poulin, of Irving Way, says, “Another Mother’s Day that’sauthentic, but not authorized, is the day school reopens in September.” Ed’s stunningwife, Gayle, says,”To the mother of young children, there’s a time and place for everything, except rest.”Cal Hastings, of Nahant Road, says, “God could not be everywhere, so he mademothers.” Cal’s alluring wife Marrit, says, “A mother is a housewife, whose idea ofleisure is the free time she has to indulge in other domestic chores.”Sheila Hambleton, of Kenney Avenue, says, “There is nothing like the joy ofmotherhood, especially when all the children are in bed.”Call me for a freemarket analysis.Cell:781.799.7777Judi MocciaOffice:781.592.0075judi.moccia@coldwellbanker.comWe sell new tanks anddispose old tanks20 lb tank -*If you purchase a new tank, wewill dispose 1 old tank FREE50 BENNETT ST• LYNN 781-593-4620Donna’s Treasures Jewelryis NOW On-the-Beach atKENNEDY STUDIOS402 Humphrey Street, Swampscott781-592-1033The fashion forecast for summer calls for neutralshades of tan, beige, cream and white.
