The poor horses themselveshave been left to the elements becausethe fences and gates were damaged andleft open. One horse was ill and anotherheavily pregnant, they were found roamingnear by. As yet, they have not found theculprits. So Rodeo Girl and dancers havespent over a year raising funds for sheets, towels, blankets and bric-a-brac, to sell ina local Charity shop for them. Our Fridaynight class held a special fundraising nightrecently and raised £55, another dancerhad homemade jam to sell and raised £15.Rodeo Girl added £30 to this to round itup to £100 in total. Over the year we haveraised over £500 for the sanctuary and thequest goes on. Some donations have beenoffered from far afield even aid from somecaring people from the USA. What we neednow is to catch the people responsible forthis crime, then we can get the sanctuaryback on track. Rodeo Girl and the sanctuarywould like to thank all who participated andare grateful for all donations.”Since they started teaching Line dancing12 years ago Maureen and Michelle havebeen followed by their ‘Line Dancing DinnerLadies’ who attended their first class. Oneof the dinner ladies, Janet, turned 60 in Julyand there were celebrations throughout theclasses as well as week long celebrationsfor Janet with family and friends. Gay startedLine dancing in 2000 when she joined JustFor Kicks in Arborfield and was in theirdemo team for several years. When JFKbecame Steps ‘n’ Stetsons, Gay was oneof many original members who becamesteadfast supporters of the new club, becoming one of the support team, helping decorate the hall for socials andcollecting the money on the front desk(which she loved because it meant shecould talk to everyone). The photo showsGay surrounded by two of her closestfriends (from left to right Wendy, Gay andJill). Gay loved dancing from the momentshe started, enjoyed all the weekendsaway and was always ready to take partin everything. In class she always lovedthe ‘sing-along’ dances and in particularCome Dance With Me. Gay’s joy was herfamily but the service held in her memoryshowed how much she affected manyother people. The chapel was crammedfull with family, members of the book clubshe belonged to and the choir she lovedsinging with, her Line dance friends andof course many friends that she had metalong her 64 years. She will be sadlymissed but she will be rememberedas someone who (as the minister said)“loved life.”Jubilee Demo“Here is a picture taken of the Easy StrollersDemonstration Team who danced at aResidential Home in Clevedon for their JubileeStreet Party, the street had to be insidebecause of the rain,” Val Vella told us. “Wedanced Dancing in the Dark to ‘Singing inthe Rain’, London Rhythm Swings, Caballeroto ‘I Can’t Tell A Waltz From A Tango’, ‘I SawLinda Yesterday’, ‘Crepes and Drapes andDrainpipes’, ‘Just A Memory’, finishing up withTil Forever, our favourite dance.”14 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com

TheDiamond Jubilee was another achievementthat we wanted to celebrate and celebratewe did! It took us over a week to decoratethe hall, hang bunting, collect tables to usefor our indoor street party. We were alsohelped with our preparations when RadioLancashire rang up to link our party withtheir popular Saturday morning show.Everyone arrived dressed in Red WhiteAnd Blue and were seated at their table inour street. When I first readit I was really cheering, I identified with so much of what she was saying. Iso often find myself selling a new dance to my class: “it’s wonderful music, you’re going to love it, easy steps and there’s only one little tag...” (thenI get drowned out by groans!) And of course, we learn the steps, put themusic on, and we are all thinking about where the tag or restart will be,listening for it, counting walls, and (I confess, I sometimes mess it up), I thinkit does mar the overall enjoyment. Yet, when doing Commitment recently, Ifound myself doing Elvis knees, which were not at the ‘weak at the knees’section of music and thinking, this doesn’t quite fit, it could do with a restartin here somewhere! We like dances to fit to the music but with the diversityof music and styles that tends to mean we rely on our choreographers todo that thinking for us. Class favourites in recent years have been GalwayGirls, Burlesque, Wonderland Waltz, Blue Night Cha and Toes. These aredifferent and full of a particular style (Irish, Tango, Waltz, Cha). So while Iadmire those of you who can dance 96 counts with two tags and restarts,I don’t plan to work my way up to Advanced level. My group like a little bitof a challenge but mostly what they like is character and enjoyment. If wecan find that in 32 counts with no tags or restarts, so much the better. I’ll becheering alongside Dot for those. I say this fully appreciating the wonderfuljob the choreographers do, many are great at remembering that manydancers are not as talented as they are!Sarah Cleaver, Laughter in Line (South Gloucestershire)Here is an extract of a poem written by Val Hamby of Blue Velvet Linedancers.“Will you chasse a little faster?” said Val to Phil.“There’s a dancer close behind us, and she’s treading on my heel.See how eagerly Bev & Kath’s folks have lined up in advance! They are waiting on the shingle – will you come and join the dance? There are no tags and just one restart ...But you’ll hear it in the music, so come and join us in the sea!”But Phil replied “Too long, too many steps!” and gave a look askance –Said he thanked Val kindly, but he would not join the dance.“What matters it how far we go?” his instructor friend replied.“There is another wall, you know, upon the other side. The further off from England the nearer is to France -Then stand not still, beloved Phil, but come and join the dance.Bang Up To DateBrilliant First in Line, congratulations to everyone involvedand we have one every week to look forward to, you havebrought the Line dance world bang up to date, well done.Audrey WatsonBack To BasicsI take great care to teach my classes the correct way toexecute dance steps and I was quite dismayed when I sawthe video in Watch & Learn of ‘Dance With Me Tonight’.The steps clearly marked in the script as toe heel strutsare being danced as toe bounces and then the whole footbeing stepped down on. Perhaps it would be a good ideato do a feature on the correct way to do basic steps.John LibbyReply: Thanks John for suggesting this, we are always open tonew ideas and maybe we will consider this for a future project. We do however, have a Linedancer Beginner DVD which isa very good learning tool and it is available on our websitewww.linedancermagazine.comWhere To GoWe have recentlyreturned from a verypleasant holiday inTenerife. One evening wetook a walk looking for abar hopefully playing oursort of music, thinking wecould sit, with a beverage and watch the world go by. Whatwe did find was a place called the Marco Polo Restaurantat the Salytien Commercial Centre, just outside of Playa, with live music playing Line dance tracks to a small packedfloor of about 12 ladies. The chap singing was Steven JTowers, he is a fantastic singer with a fabulous range, whowill sing requests in most genres but seems mostly happywith Country and the more melodic style of music (he willhave a go at anything, sometimes with hilarious results).Steven accompanies himself on an acoustic guitar and, being a guitar player myself, I can only marvel at his skilland repertoire. We went back a few times and always hada good time. His great singing and playing and his relaxedstyle was a very pleasant change from the karaoke stylesingers of other bars and we would strongly recommendanyone going to Tenerife to pay him a visit.Chris and Mac Bennettwww.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 17

Line dance choreographer, instructor and dancer ChrisHodgson is dedicated to herlove of dance. In this interviewwith Laurent, Chris tellsLinedancer how she works, rests and plays...Can you tell us about you, whereyou live and your life at homeI live in Formby on Merseyside andhave done since I was married. I’mmarried to Richard and have onedaughter Kim and a Son-in-Law Rob.We have a beautiful Border Collienamed Blade who we walk in thepinewoods and on the beach everyday, which is very relaxing. I love to tendmy garden and enjoy growing fl owersand vegetables, I grow all my owntomatoes. I am a lousy cook, the onlything that comes out of my kitchen aremy dances. I seem to have a busy lifewith all the things I enjoy doing. Richardand I are also big Formula One andathletics fans, so we are really lookingforward to the Olympics this year. How did you discover Line dance?I discovered country music whenI met Richard as he was a big fan.One evening, about 18 years ago, hesuggested we went to the Riverside inSouthport as they had country bandson there. Well, that was it...I saw Linedancing and just got up and followedthem all. What were your first impressionsand how did you get from dancer toinstructor to choreographer?Wow....great stuff. I thought, I cando that, so I did. As I had beenchoreographing and teaching my ownfi tness routines since 1984, it was nota problem for me to put Line dancestogether and as it happened, I was quitegood at it...(she laughs). Are things different now than whenyou started out?Yes very, it was all country music thenand the dances where a lot simpler and18 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com

we danced them over and over again,as Line dancing was fairly new andeveryone was so keen. The diversity ofthe music now, for me, is better. It tooka while for me to accept non countrymusic for dancing, I resisted for along time but, as with everything, onehas to move on and I grew to love thedifferent types of music. Had it stayedall country, I most probably wouldnot be Line dancing now. I also feelthat although the level of dances hasincreased somewhat, they are muchharder now and more complicated...ahhh the good old days when they wereso easy. Having said that, they were noteasy at the time. How do you feel today about Linedance?Love it...love it...love it. I’ve dancedall my life, in one way or another andLine dance just suits me fi ne. To teachAbsolute Beginners and see themprogress is so wonderful, even thosewith two left feet. What do you feel are your greatestachievements in Line dance?Having one of my dances danced allover the world and seeing people happyand smiling whilst they are dancingsomething that came out of my kitchen...ha ha...and of course winning UKChoreographer of the Year in 1999...andthen Improver Dance of the Year in 2008for Galway Girls. How busy does Line dance keep younow?Fairly busy, although I don’t travel asmuch now but with the organisation for myown classes, there are all the new dancesto look at, choose which ones I think theywill like, which music will they love or hate!It is time consuming but enjoyable. I havetravelled so much around the world Linedancing and have met so many wonderfulpeople. It’s fantastic to share an interestwith people in all these different placesand of course I have made many goodfriends along the way.How do you choreograph a dance?I choose the music first, I reallyhave to love a track to be able towrite to it. I break the music downinto verse-chorus-tag-restart etc....then put the music on and just dancearound my kitchen doing a few stepsand see which feel good to anypart of the track and sometimes themusic inspires me to do a particularmovement. I then start to build itup, so that everything fits into eachsection of music, sometimes I amhappy straight away and other timesI have to change things around as Ifeel they are not quite right and wouldflow better another way. I get myinspiration from the music becausesometimes the music tells me whatto do.Any plans for the near future? To keep on dancing and teachingand enjoying my classes as long asI possibly can.www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 19

Norwegian musician,Morten Harket, bestknown as the leadsinger of the bandA-ha whose first single,‘Take On Me’, becamea huge hit, presents hisnew solo album‘Out Of My Hands’.No other band from the mid eightieswas able to continually develop theirfusion of rock and electronic musicso successfully over the course of 25years as did A-ha. This outstandingposition has been significantly definedby Morten Harket.Morten grew up in Asker, Norway.Asker is notably a coastal area withmany beautiful beaches but it is also aplace of hills and woods and with theexpansion of Oslo has resulted in itsbecoming an affluent suburb. Harket’searly musical influences includedUriah Heep, Queen, Johnny Cash,Toto, Elton John, David Bowie, andPeter Gabriel. “The spirit of A-ha isdeep inside me,” says Morten. “I feela great respect for what has happenedover the years.”Out of My Hands is his fifth studioalbum. “Some songs originateddirectly in my house at the Oslo fjord, when in the middle of the night, somechords were buzzing through myhead. The next morning, I phoned Erikand we recorded the first outlines ona piano. Within 30 minutes, we hada structure.” He assembled a teamof ‘well-tried’ and ‘new’ colleaguesaround himself. Norwegian poet OleSverre Olsen, a long-time friend ofHarket, assisted with the lyrics. Thetour keyboardist and bassist ErikLjunggren counts among the coproducers, alongside Peter Kvintfrom Sweden and Englishman SteveOsborne (who already contributedto the A-ha album ‘Foot Of TheMountain’). Together with Ole SverreOlsen and Peter Kvint, Harket haswritten the striking one-liners for theuptempo hymn ‘I’m The One’. It is apoetic all-or-nothing game betweenlove song and the big questions of life.Harket describes the creative processof ‘Out Of My Hands’, “Overall, it wasa reciprocal process that evolvedinto a close interaction of differentminds and inspirations,” On the single‘Scared Of Heights’, Harket’s uniquevoice is floating through a featheryuptempo arrangement by Norwegiansongwriter Espen Lind. The range covers melancholy balladssuch as ‘Quiet’ with its finely spundialogue of semi acoustic guitar andwarm synth tones as well as the livelymarching ‘Lightning’, in which thesound wall continually rises up to thechorus. ‘When I Reach The Moon’ onthe other hand combines a distinctiveguitar riff with Harket’s unmistakablefalsetto.Morten Harket has found a newbalance and his energetic solopresentation will be presented duringan extensive live tour this year. Thistravelling marathon will take him fromRussia through Europe and later toSouth America.Morten Harket is known for hisextraordinary vocal range, whichsome sources have claimed spansfive octaves, although Harket himselfsaid in 2009, “I’ve never counted, quite honestly”. His voice is said to becapable of the “greatest falsetto in thehistory of pop music ever...”www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 21

I am writing to share with you the pleasure that Line dancing can give to all abilities.I was asked to try a Line dance class, initially for three sessions, with a day centrefor people with learning disabilities. Beinga BWDA trained instructor I thought I couldteach most abilities, the only problem wasthat I had no experience with any formof disability. I went for a visit to meet thehelpers and to see for myself the extentof their problems. What amazed me wasthe poor range of ability, both mentaland physical and the wide range of agesinvolved. The disabilities range fromblindness to extreme mental problems tobeing wheelchair bound but the one thingthey have in common is their love of music, any music. It was clear from the outset that thecommon range of movement was limited,as was the mental capacity to rememberthe steps. The first consideration was rangeof movements that I could incorporate. All dances had to be one wall as turningwould disorient most of the class. Danceshad to be single count dances, as faststep changes such as ‘and counts’ wouldresult in possible accidents and maybebeyond the ability of most of the class.Crossing steps were out and ‘kick-ballchanges’were ‘kicked into touch’. Withsome ingenuity ‘vines’ and ‘weaves’ couldbe replaced with ‘Chassés’, ‘jazz boxes’replaced with ‘rocking chair’ and so on.Tags and restarts were also unsuitable asbeing too confusing. The second consideration was length ofdance, speed and type of the music andnumber of counts. I decided early on torestrict the count number to 32, so thatthe dance could be taught in four blocksof eight counts. The chosen speed hadto fit the type of steps written comfortablybut I had decided that if I had to vary thespeed of the music I would do so. Thetype of software I use, allowed me to dothis without altering the pitch of the music. It was obvious that the teaching wouldhave to be paced correctly with emphasisplaced on repetition. The staff reassuredme that they would be assisting andguiding the students, as I had raised anissue about my back being turned a greatdeal of the time during the teaching. Aftershortlisting a few of the ‘oldies but goodies’I decided to write a very basic dance. Themusic I decided on was ‘I Feel Lucky’ byMary Chapin Carpenter, with a strong beatand dividable into 32 counts without theneed for tags or restarts. This was to be myfirst teach and my second teach was to bea modified ‘California Freeze’ with chasséinstead of the vines and doing away withthe quarter hitch turn at the end.The first day arrived and after a briefintroduction from the staff I set about thetask in hand. The warm up and initialteach went as expected but when I put themusic on to dance for the first time, thingsseemed to come alive. Their love of musicand movement seemed to take over andalthough, in the words of Eric Morecombe,“they knew all the steps but not necessarilyin the right order” their enjoyment wasevident. They didn’t need perfection, theyjust wanted to move to music. We did thedance again it was greeted with the sameenthusiasm as the first time. I was elatedto see the enjoyment in their eyes. Wethen went through ‘California Freeze’ moresuccessfully and I even heard them singingsome of the words as they danced. I sawsomething of the enjoyment I felt whenI went to my first class many years ago.It was then that I decided this wassomething I wanted to carry on with, if theywould have me.That was over a year ago. We now haveover fourteen dances either modified orespecially written that we do and over 100different tunes to dance them to. Of coursethey need a refresh before every dance buttheir dance memory is improving. Theirenthusiasm has never decreased, nor hasmine. We always end every session with adance in a circle to steps I wrote to DaveSheriff’s ‘Best of Friends’ and the wordsbrings home to me the reason that we meeteach week, to enjoy each other’s companyand to move to music. If anyone is able todonate some time to helping to encourageLine dancing with day centres, care homes, etc. I can thoroughly recommend it. Believeme, you will get as much from it as yourstudents. If you are interested in the verybasic scripts we use, you can contact mevia the magazine. Thank you for allowingme to share my enthusiasm.Rushden, Northantswww.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 23

Ronnie really enjoys, having writtenmany dances, her favourite one is ‘JustShine’, the track ‘Shine’ by VanessaAmorosi was given to her by her goodfriend Lyndon Foster just days before hedied and he was the inspiration for that. This dance is still enjoyed by many andwas used as a competition dance at TheCWDC European Championships.Ronnie, now 68, lives a life of dance andhow lucky is that. The Valley Stompershave made wonderful memories for somany people. New faces have joinedover the years, some sadly have passedaway but will always be remembered.Strong friendships have formed and it’sall down to Line dancing. When she isnot dancing, Ronnie is never happierthan being outside in all weathers withher beloved miniature ponies, or ridingacross the National Park on her horse, yet even then there is usually a dancerunning through her head.www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 25

Judging by the crowdsof young (and not soyoung) women wantingto be photographed withthe handsome youngman, one might thinkhe’s the new hot, pop orfilm star heartthrob! Butno, he is in fact, <strong>Daniel</strong><strong>Trepat</strong> the hottest youngDutch dancer, instructorand choreographer of themoment and MaureenJessop recently met him.26 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com

<strong>Daniel</strong> is in great demand in France andCBA goers have been able to appreciatehis talents in recent years, however, Imet him for the first time at the FFCLDNational Encounters weekend in Issoudun(Central France) where he was teachingworkshops, giving private technicalclasses and judging the Masters TeamsCompetition. I found him to be a charmingfun loving young man at ease witheveryone, regaling us with stories of thepranks he played when he was a teenagecompetitor in the Dutch championships, even going so far as to wink at Kelly Gellettethe formidable judge. This ploy didn’t workon her and she severely reprimanded him!In Holland there is one name that standsout from all, Roy Verdonk. Roy noticed<strong>Daniel</strong> when he was competing and hegave him the opportunity to start instructingand travel all over the world with Roy. Thiswas a wonderful opportunity for him andhe later joined Roy’s team ‘The Kids’ whichwon many titles in competition.Pim Van Grootel and <strong>Daniel</strong> are greatfriends and it was together that theydecided to participate in the TV showHolland’s Got Talent in 2010. The panel ofjudges smirked when the guys announcedthey were Line dancers but the smirkssoon changed to amazement when thepair launched into their funny, acrobaticnumber based on Mario the Nintendogame hero. The public votes brought themup to the quarter finals and the voutubevideo has had over a million hits!<strong>Daniel</strong> now 25, has been dancingsince the age of 10 and competing since2000, culminating in the WCDF title ofMegastar in 2011, the highest level inLine dance under this organisation. Hebegan teaching at his mother’s danceschool in 2004 and eventually turned tochoreography. His dances such as AllSummer Long choreographed with Pimhave become great favourites. At Issoudun he taught four of hisdances, Red Camaro, I participated in thisworkshop and found that he was able totransmit the steps in a way even I couldfollow adding humour and a few wordsof French! Other dances he taught wereFun Machine, Don’t Gimme That andArizona Cowboy. This talented young manhas many strings to his dance bow. Afterturning professional two years ago he nowhas his own dance school Funky DanceFactory offering classes in WCS, couplesand funky as well as Line. He also teacheschildren in primary schools. He is nowmaking his name as a private coach forcompetitors and social dancers alike.<strong>Daniel</strong> currently coaches one of France’sChampion dancers, Laura Bartholomei.Laura tells me that <strong>Daniel</strong> knows just howto teach and coach her so she understandsprecisely what he wants of her. He will, however, take into consideration her ideasand may adapt routines to suit her style ofdance. His international renown has beenrewarded by nominations as InternationalInstructor/Choreographer of the Year inmany countries, including the CBA, anevent that suits his fun loving personalityperfectly. He loves the event but addsmischievously that he hopes to win aCrystal Boot one day!Watching the young man dance wecould imagine that he spent years learningall styles of dance – but no – he claims theonly dance form he practised was Line!Other forms he picked up by watchingvideos and of course he benefited bythe expert guidance of Roy Verdonk,Raymond Sarlmijn, Darren Bailey andAnthony van Egmond ‘They taughtme everything I know now’. With the release of Kenny Chesney’s 13th studioalbum, ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl’, Kenny opts toput the pedal to the fl oor in what’s destined to be amilestone chapter in an already historic career.Chesney calls Fishbowl the “mostemotional” record he has everrecorded. With so many songs thatalready form the soundtrack to somany people’s lives, that in its self saysa lot. But more than that, Fishbowl’s 12songs showcase one of country music’smost important artists at their peak, blending confi dence and vulnerability, bravado and longing, in a way fewartists could master, regardless ofgenre. Longtime fans and newcomersalike will fi nd Chesney’s Fishbowlboth familiar and adventurous, withsurprises around every corner andinsightful observations at every turn. This is Kenny challenging the listenerwhile providing an unforgettable ride.Produced by Chesney with longtimecollaborator Buddy Cannon, Fishbowldelivers great songs penned by bothChesney himself and a diverse mixof top-shelf songwriters. Kenny saysthat in making the album he felt “solidin his skin” in his roles as songwriter, producer and interpreter of songs. “I’dbeen through a lot emotionally sincethe album ‘Hemingway’s Whisky’ cameout and I think that’s refl ected in thisrecord,” he says. “My main goal whenI went into the studio was to be honestwith my fans and myself as a songwriterand a creative person. I do feel likeI’m comfortable at being authentic, wherever that leads me. That’s why I’mproud of this record. In an era when many albums comeoff as collections of unrelated songs,Fishbowl is conceived as a body ofwork and is sequenced to perfection, with heart wrenching lows expertlybalanced against thrilling highs.Listeners will surely relate to the barelycontained urgency of ‘Come Over’,celebrate with the delightfully nonjudgmentalthrowdown of ‘Feel Like ARock Star’ (with Tim McGraw), revel inthe quirky social commentary of the titlecut and see themselves in the smartlyobserved ‘I’m a Small Town’. Sportingmemorable melodies and charismaticvocals, ‘While He Still Knows Who I Am’and the haunting ‘Sing ‘Em Good, MyFriend’ are two of the more emotionallycharged songs Chesney has ever cut.Chesney says, “When you’ve been asblessed as I’ve been with all the songsI’ve had on the radio, it would be reallyeasy to internally get complacent,”Chesney says Fishbowl, “defi nes mewhere I am right now and I’m happyabout that. Getting to this spot hasbeen years of work, I didn’t just wakeup one day and say, ‘I’m gonna startbeing honest with my fans and myself.’It takes some time to be that vulnerableas a person, especially when you’re inthe public eye.”Kenny welcomes both veteran fansand newbies. “I’m excited about thepeople that have been on this train withme a long time, listened to my music, dreamed this dream with me and saweverything that has happened” hesays. “If ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl’ istheir fi rst Kenny Chesney record, I’mreally glad that this is their fi rst one.I’m that proud of it.” Welcome to theFishbowl is unmistakably Kenny. Carol Craven gives us her insight report on thisunique event…the Line dance Marathon iscelebrating its twentieth anniversary next year andJean Garr aided by Scott Blevins works incrediblyhard to ensure that each event is better than last ….Here Carol looks back on a very successful eventand some of the dances she particularly liked.I was a little nervous about theMarathon this year. I’ve gone formany, many years and wheneveranyone wanted to change things,Jean’s answer was always, “It’s TheMarathon!” You see, the Marathon isdifferent enough but this year therewere some welcome changes. Sono, we didn’t have a zillion lessonsa day in multiple rooms, no, peopleweren’t there to teach only their ownchoreography, no, we didn’t startin the early-morning hours, no, wedidn’t have demos first thing in themorning, no, we didn’t have a paradeat midnight and no we didn’t have paidworkshops ( just some of the goodthings that happened this year) -- andyes, I think Jean was very happy withthe changes. I think Scott was animportant part of letting Jean knowthat this would be a good direction totake the Marathon after talking to manypeople and encouraging his friends tobe supportive and give this a serioustry this year -- and give it a try they did.The DJs took their responsibilityof truly setting the tone of an eventseriously and they were all fabulous.Thank you, Louie, JP Potter, and JillBabinac for doing such a great job andkeeping the floor full all day and night. There was a wonderful turnout andthe atmosphere was fresh and happyand it became a marathon of fun andcamaraderie. This is the event thatstarted our weekend adventures manyyears ago and the off springs that havecome after have each developed theirown personalities and grown from theirinfancy to world-class events, manywith the advice and help of Jean, I trulythink the dance world would not havebeen the same without the inspirationof the Marathon. The hotel lobby and bar area aresituated so you check in and socialisethe very first moment you arrive. Thereare shouts of greetings and hugs allaround. The staff are wonderful, asis the desk staff, the cafe staff, therestaurant staff, the bar staff, the giftshop owner, and every other personwho works there sporting a smile anda greeting because I truly think they doenjoy our stay and show it.Registration started promptly at noonon Thursday followed by workshopsbeginning at two. There were someexcellent dances taught during theweekend. Some of the most populardances being done before the Marathonstarted were chosen for the opening day,People Like You by Joey Warren, LoveTrouble taught by Lou Ann Schemmel.Scott taught his Hurt Me So, very popularthis weekend. Nigel Amon taught theenergetic Fake ID, Maurice Rowe taughtone of his new ones, M & M’s Lullaby.Guyton Mundy taught his beautifulFaithfully, Lou Ann taught Infinity AndBeyond by the winner of the EuropeanChoreography Championships andJohn Robinson taught Without Fire andthis is Thursday afternoon before thelargest crowds even arrived.www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 51

Friday started off at 8:15 withCardio Linedance taught by Brackenand she repeated this Friday andSaturday mornings for the earlybirds. Um, I wasn’t up for that one.Lessons started at 10am every day.It was so nice to get up and havea leisurely breakfast and chill untillessons started. I loved startingat that time. The most mentioneddances that I heard about on Fridaywere Hurry Up And Wait, HoochieCoochie, Straight To Memphis(this is a very easy contra dancethat Scott taught and it absolutelyfilled the floor). Michael Barrretaught the classic American Pop.What a great dance! Nancy Morgantaught a cute beginner dance calledEasy Does It and Michele Burton’sMidnight Train is to a lovely songthat I have always loved. Scotttaught Naughty Baby and peoplereally liked this one. Brackenbrought back another great dance,Give It Back. Love this one, too.Friday late afternoon was the CookieParty. I always am nervous aboutdoing the Cookie Party just becauseI like to be invisible. We alwayshave fun, though, and this year Iwas so grateful to Dancin’ Terry andher friends for doing a Chair Dancedemo. What a great idea for peoplewho aren’t able to dance or if theyare in a nursing home or for somereason aren’t able to stand up anddance and it was really fun. Shedid Beach Bop Boogie (Beginner)and Proud Mary (Intermediate) andeveryone joined in laughing and justhaving fun.Once again, the previews ofSaturday and Sunday dances wereat 7:30 and then the evening dancebegan. The dances I noticed onSaturday (or people told me about)were Dark Side. This has beenaround a little while but it got a lotof attention this weekend. MauriceRowe’s dance, Mamma KnowsBest and Debbie McLaughlin’sdance, Solid Ground, were doneone after the other in the sameroom to the same music. I reallyliked Maurice’s and took that lessonand Debbie’s was popular on thefloor and looked good too. BonnieMatthews taught a cute Beginnerdance to a Maverick’s song calledWhat A Thrill. Will Craig’s How YouGonna is a good dance. Brackentaught an easy soul-type dancecalled The Voice Of Soul to theSoulman music. Johnny Two-Steptaught a cute, easy Charleston-typedance called Hey Boy. Scott taughta new one called Nice And Slow.Brian Barakauskas taught twotechnique classes that were verywell attended. I was happy to see himteaching a technique class becausehis are excellent. I think it’s sadthat some people dance for manyyears but never work on techniqueso it’s basically just learning stepsand not so much how to do them. Ireally hope that everyone will takeadvantage of these classes whenthey are offered, not only by Brianbut by others teaching them. Theyare well worth the time and effortand you just learn so much in sucha short time to make you look betterand dance safely. Nancy Morgan52 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com

taught two cute easy ones calledEz Skillz and That Girl. You knowI think Nancy is really talented atdoing fun, easy dances. I reallyliked John Robinson’s In The MoodFor The Blues, a really cute, soulfuldance that he does so well. One ofmy faves of the weekend was ColdBlooded Lover by Joey Warren. It’sa fast waltz similar to The Smell ofYour Sweet Perfume but I love bothof those dances. Neville Fitzgeraldtaught What Am I To You and KissThe Stars, which I had heard alot about and the floor was quitefull for both of these. Guyton’sFairy Tales And Love Songs...Whatever was mentioned to mea lot. Bryan McWherter broughtback one of my all-time favourites,Phloor Philla. It was fun to try toremember. Johnny Two-Step taughtan upbeat, easy dance called JustEnjoy. Michael Thompson taughta country Beginner called KeepMy In Mind. I wanted to take WillCraig’s Worldwide but was not inthe building for that one, I loved themusic. Rona Kaye taught her newone called What’s The Point? I wasalso gone for this one but it lookedgood in the previews. The show onSaturday night was FABULOUS. Oh,my goodness, you just had to bethere. There was a 50/50 raffle and lotsand lots of passes and gifts givenout by event directors and vendorsat the event. Guyton also did araffle of his artwork with half of theproceeds going to the Boys andGirls Club of Florida. There was alsoa best costume prize for the Vegastheme. I left early on Sunday to getback home and I would definitelyhave taken Junior’s (the boy is on aroll, I tell you) Samba In The Sun. Imight have to teach this one myself.Other dances taught on Sundaywere Mirror taught by Nigel Amon,Turn To You, taught by MichaelThompson, Born For Leavin’ byNeville, Back In Black And SickOf Me taught by Junior, SearchThe Whole World taught by JulietHauser, Late Night Bimbo and LeaveYour Mark by Debbie McLaughlin,Creepin Up On You (a really darlingdance by Peter and Alison) taughtby Lynne Martino, who was theabsolutely fabulous star of the showon Saturday. I think she would winthe Academy Award of Dance forthat performance. Bonnie Mathewstaught It Happened In Montereyand Beach Thang. I’ll have to waitfor feedback on these dances orwe’ll see which ones do well onthe survey in the upcoming weeks.Needless to say, I had a blastseeing everyone and dancing andjust spending a weekend havingfun at THE MARATHON. There isonly one event like this and I hope itcontinues for many years to come.Next year is the 20th Anniversary,so plan your trip to be in Raleighbetween May 30th and June 2nd of2013 to do it all over again. Thanksso much to Jean and Scott and allof the volunteers who made THEMARATHON such a success onceagain. I heard nothing but nicethings about it and I’m alreadyreading that people are booking fornext year.www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 53

What are the festival goers like? Are they any different in theirappreciation of music and dancethan anywhere else? The festival goers in Mirande werefull of fun, the sun was shining and soeveryone was in a great mood. Theyall had a fantastic time and many metup with friends they only see a coupleof times a year and so it was like a bigget together. How did you find the languagebarrier? It was quite daunting at fi rst butdance is a universal language so wemanaged with no problems at all. Iused hand signals and if I pointed ina specifi c direction everyone knewwhat that meant. Many dance termsare not even translated by the Frenchinstructors, they just use the Englishterms and so I didn’t need to worry toomuch. However, I do like to attemptsome French and so have a coupleof directional words I know and cancount a dance in French which isoften a help. The dancers are veryunderstanding and I bet the little bit ofFrench I do try and speak is appallingbut they never say that! How about the French dancers? What were their preferences? Didyou see a change in their style ormusic choice compared to lastyear?Mirande is a country music festivaland so the music choices arepredominantly country based, as youwill fi nd all over France. The have avery big country music scene in Francehowever there are other infl uencescoming in – they love Irish music andthere are some pop songs they love. How many dance floors are there atthe event? There are two dance fl oors. Onefl oor is an instructional and socialfl oor and the other is used forchoreography competitions, countrydancecompetitions and specialistworkshops. The main fl oor was thebusiest I have never seen a dancefl oor in my eighteen years of dancingwith hundreds of dancers standingshoulder to shoulder.Who was there chorographer wise? There was an excellent selection ofFrench instructors and the overseasguests this year including myself wereMarlene De Preez from Belgium andBenny Ray from Denmark who wasvery well received indeed. He is anexcellent instructor, a pleasure to workwith and he seemed to really enjoy hisfi rst time at the event. What did you teach? You penneda dance yourself and how did it godown? There were four days and theworkshops are an hour and a halflong so you do have a fair amountof time with your dancers. I taught acouple of winning dances from thisyear’s Crystal Boot Awards includingSkinny Genes and BittersweetMemory and also my own danceShopping. I also choreographed alittle cha cha especially for the eventcalled You Know Cha and it seemedto go down very well. I am interestedto see how many dance fl oors itreaches, if any! What is the main thing dancers lookfor in Mirande do you think? It is a really fun event and is allabout meeting up with friends andhaving a great time. This is whatdancers do the world over - enjoydancing together. Finally, if you had to describeMirande in just a few words, whatwould you say?A fun, friendly country carnival.www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 55

The Social Side of WorldsIn my last feature about the UCWDCCountry World Dance Championships, Italked about the competitive side of theevent. Today, I want to highlight the socialelement of Worlds. First time director,Randy Shotts is no stranger to thecompetitive country dance world havingbeen an original masters competitor, withhis wife Rhonda, when the organisationwas formed back in the early 90’s.Shotts is eager to embrace the socialaspect more than it has been in the past.“We want people to know that our goal isto be a more social dance friendly eventand not just about competition anymore”,says Randy.A few new changes that have beenadded to the agenda include:• A variety of event passes which willallow social dancers to come for as littletime as a single night of dancing all theway up to the full week.• Social dance contests will continueto be offered for those that are soinclined to participate. There will still bethe UCWDC sanctioned popular swingJack n’ Jill, plus there will be the newlyformed organisation, the Country TwoStep Tour (CTST) sanctioned two stepJack n’ Jill.• The very popular open lobby Linedance floor will return again with avariety of developing activities to takeplace at that location as well.• There will be plenty of nighttimedancing each with it’s own dedicateddeejay and hardwood floor. There willalso be another Line dance room, swingroom and new this year...a countryroom. Also, there will be no waiting untilthe competition is over to dance.• Lots of workshops, all levels, all dances(country, Line, swing) with a large varietyof the best instructors in the world.56 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com

In his second look at the wonderfulWorlds, Barry Amato leads usthrough an important element of theevent…its social side. All of this and more, to be announced, will take place in a concentrated area ofthe beautiful Gaylord Opryland Hotel.Perhaps you want to take a small socialbreak from the dancing action? There is plenty to do in the picturesqueMusic Valley area that you can takeadvantage of including restaurants, museums, shopping at Opry Mills andthe world famous Grand Ole Opry.Gaylord Opryland hotel guests alsohave access to a free shuttle service todowntown Nashville. They will drop youoff in the heart of where all of the dancingand entertainment action is in Music Cityand bring you back. What’s not to like?My next feature on worlds will highlightall of the extra curricular activitiesand happenings that are still beingdeveloped. There will be a lot of greatnew changes that will take place allowingyou to live your own fun, new dancingmemories at Worlds. For more information on the event, go towww.UCWDCWorlds.com and check backoften as updates are made on the site.Remember, the dates for the event areDecember 31st, 2012 - January 6th, 2013.www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 57

If you are looking for inspiration or newmusic, this is where you will fi nd it.We give you the low down and the buzzon some of the new albums about tobe released in our occasional series.BEHIND CLOSED DOORS-WHERE COUNTRY MEETS SOULVarious ArtistsThe 23 tracks in this new compilation provide a superb illustrationof what can happen Behind Closed Doors...WhenCountry Meets Soul. Most of the artists featuredhere would have heard country music in theiryouth. Most of them recorded in the southernstudios and often used pickers from the pool ofmusicians who worked on country sessions inMemphis, Nashville and Muscle Shoals. It’s nosurprise that they all sounded as at home with a country song asthey did with a straight-ahead slice of soul. Here you’ll hear some ofthe biggest soul artists of their time on some of the biggest countryhits of the 60s and 70s. Candi Staton does Patsy Cline, James Carrcovers Mel Tillis, Millie Jackson sings Merle Haggard, Brook Bentontips his musical hat to Jerry Lee Lewis, Al Green pays homage toHank Williams, and so much more besides. Unlike similarly-themedcompilations, this CD features only 100% authentic country songsand 100% authentic soul singers. It may not be the first of its kindbut it is undoubtedly the best of its kind to date.NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL A NO. 1Various ArtistsReleased to celebrate 60 years of the OfficialSingles Chart, Now That’s What I Call a No. 1features some of the biggest hits in pop musichistory. Highlights from this three-disc box setinclude tracks from Adele, Robbie Williams,Abba, Kylie Minogue, Celine Dion, Oasis,Coldplay, Rod Stewart and David Bowie.Spanning across the decades, it’s the perfect compilation for afamily get together or street party celebrations.LATINOMilosHaving won Gramophone Magazine’s “Young Artist of the Year” andachieved sales of over 150,000 copies worldwide with his secondalbum The Guitar, Milos will have high hopes forfollow up effort, Latino. The album includes newsolo guitar and string orchestra arrangementsof popular Latin hits such as Gardel’s ‘Por unacabeza’, Piazzolla’s ‘Libertango’ and ‘Oblivion’, andthe folk hit ‘Quizás, Quizás, Quizás’. With his newalbum Latino, Milos’ inspiration moves from theMediterranean to the sultry sounds and passion of Latin America ...TRULY YOURS-THEIR FIRST MOTOWN ALBUMSpinnersThe latest in a prestigious series of Motown collections spotlightsthe Spinners (or the Detroit Spinners, as they areknown in the UK), one of the most polished groupsto emerge from Berry Gordy’s fabled recordingempire. The first dozen tracks here comprisetheir debut album, The Original Spinners.Released in 1967, the LP featured the Spinnersfirst three hits That’s What Girls Are Made For,I’ll Always Love You and Truly Yours and pretty much served astheir best-of up to that point. Of the 14 contemporaneous bonustitles, 10 are previously unissued, all freshly transferred from theoriginal Motown masters. These include ballads such as Darling, which displays the Spinners doo-wop roots and a handful of topof-the-rangestompers. Gee Whizz! This has been a tough month for us all ….With our new weekly magazine and all the deadlines inherent to such aproject, it has been hour after hour of getting video files produced, put in theright format (why oh why are there so many variations of video and audiofiles…), researching and writing features, planning, interviewing, speaking toPR’s etc etc…But you know working for Linedancer Magazine always underlines how greatthis community is. Onlinedancer Weekly depends very much on dancers allover the world.Take our popular First In Line section… From our amazing talentedchoreographers who give us their dance, their time and are happy to justleave their ‘baby’ with us for weeks (it takes between four to six weeks foreach dance to come from script to release), to the wonderful team headedby Juliet Lam and Walt Hsu who are getting an international and deservedreputation for their excellence of quality and are constantly badgered by yourstruly to get weekly videos done, (Walt does all of the artwork and titles in trueHollywood style) to the amazing Glenn Rogers and his team providing us withthe soundtrack for our subscribers. These two pages are all dependent on theteam work from many people, all living away from one another and all withone common goal….delivering the very best product they can.The same applies to Vivienne Scott who works relentlessly to bring us hervaluable Focus On section, providing dancers with real databases andsuggestions on levels, choreographers and styles of dances that we all, toooften, get stuck in finding.Grapevine International is also an amazing feat every week with videos andpictures and texts coming in from all over the world. Clubs wanting to sayhello wherever they are to friends they will probably never meet but want tosalute and share their passion with! And what about Big Dave Gastap who gives valuable tips on dances to lookout for and does so every week, without fail. I very well know Dave does notjust pick three dances out of his hat… He loves Line dance and dancersfar too much for that and he gives us some REAL tips on what is about tobecome a big hit on dance floors all over the world. A valuable contribution forus all.Onlinedancer Weekly is a tall order, make no mistake. We knew that beforewe started it but thanks to our incredible worldwide team of players, thanksto their generosity, their patience (with me mainly!) their kindness and theirexcellence, dancers all over the world can and do enjoy a fabulous productthat we are proud of. And they do that every week.So today I salute every one who works for us for keeping you and I interestedand amazed every single issue. To all, thank you.82 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com
