MARAUDER MEN’S BASKETBALL 2012-13John Taylor becamethe Marauders’head men’s basketballcoach for the2010-11 season, andfor the first 10 gameswas both men’s andwomen’s head coach. In that season, justas in 2011-12 heguided the Maraudersto another 20 winseason, and madeplayoffs. In 2011-12 he didwhat only one othercoach in Californiahas ever done -coached a team to thestate final four forboth the men’s andwomen’s. His Marauder women’s team played in the final fourin 2007.In his 10 plus seasons as women’s coach, Taylor’s accomplishmentsincluded both state and school prominence. In 2008 he added “Giant Killer” to his already impressiveresume. The win over the top team last season was added to other accomplishmentsthat included becoming thefirst Marauder women’s basketball coachto get 200 wins on the way to the team’s seventhFoothill Conference championship -- their fifth inthe last seven years. He also won his 350th careergame as a head coach.Last season’s Elite Eight performance also pointsto a remarkable career for Taylor at AVC, where heis now in his 10th season as head of the women’sbasketball program.Taylor led the No. 17 seeded Marauders toa 73-63 win over the No. 1 Orange Coast Pirates-- the first women’s team seeded lower than 16thto pull the upset against the top seeded team instate history. Intriguingly, Taylor almost accomplishedthe feat against Ventura when he coachedLA Valley in 1998. The Monarchs lost by a pointon a buzzer beater after six seconds were put on theclock after time expired.Last season he led the Marauders to their seventhFoothill Conference championship and theirfifth in the last seven years, while becoming the first Marauder women’sbasketball coach to get 200 wins. He also won his 350th career game asa head coach. In the 2004-2005 season, Taylor put together the best team AVC hasever had.The Marauders’ theme for the season -- “HistoryMade” -- was appropriate. AVC ended with a schoolrecord 31 wins on the season. At second in the state, they had their highest ranking ever. They also had theirhighest seeding ever. In 2004-05 AVC won 10, 20 and30 games faster than any Marauder team in history. AVCopened the season with a school record seven straightwins. These seven included AVC’s first-ever tournamentchampionship (SD Mesa), AVC’s first tournament MVP(Shalonie Hutchinson) and AVC’s second tournament win(Glendale). AVC won their third tournament of the seasonby winning the Clear Channel Holiday Tournament,JOHN TAYLORmarking the first home tournament win.All this surpassed a 2002-03 team that crafted aschool record 25 wins, which included a 17-game winningstreak and undefeated Foothill Conference championshipteam. Taylor won his 200th community collegeHead CoachSecond Season - 64-26The Taylor Eragame as a head coach during the 2002-03 season, and was named theFoothill Conference Coach of the Year. The 2007-08 season was the Marauders’ sixth straight 20-win seasona record, and marked the eighth straight playoff appearance for AVC.In 2006-07, Taylor not only became the winningest women’s basketballcoach in AVC history, beating El Camino for win 143, but alsopicked up win 300 in his overall career -- against Chaffey at home. The 2004-05 Marauder team became the first to play in the statesemifinals, also a first for Taylor. Another first for Taylor was beingnamed the State Coach of the Year.Taylor was hired in 2002 as a full-time physical education facultymember after coaching two 19-win seasons, including two trips to theplayoffs, and the inauguration of the Clear Channel AVC Holiday Tournament. In 2007, Taylor finished his tenure as President of the CaliforniaCommunity College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.Taylor came to the Marauders after spending seven seasons as thehead coach of the LA Valley women’s basketball team. He crafted a144-93 record with the Monarchs, and led them to an Elite Eight berthin the state playoffs in 1999, losing to the eventual state champion. Theyear before, LA Valley dumped the Marauders out of the playoffs, 70-65,in the first round, then lost by a point to the eventual state championVentura. In fact, Taylor’s teams have played in the playoffs 11 straightseasons, including a school record last six seasons with AVC, and threetimes the Monarchs played for a chance to play in the Elite Eight, makingit once. The Monarchs won the 1995-96 Western State Conference championship, and was runner-up three times. MARAUDER MEN’S BASKETBALL 2012-13WHAT IS A MARAUDER? -- And other Frequently Asked QuestionsWHAT IS A MARAUDER?A marauder is one who marauds (I know, the Language Arts folksare rightly peeved by now, read on). The term has been attached toseveral peoples over the years, butespecially the Marauding Hordesand Bedouin Marauders. Bothgroups attacked from the north andlooted and pillaged (a good definitionof maraud) whatever civilizationthey might run into. Since theMarauding Hordes came fromthe northern Asian areas and theBedouin Marauders were the dwellersof the northern African deserts,AVC has decided to honor those ofthe desert nature, while ComptonCollege (Tartars) decided to identifythemselves with those of the Asian group.WHY IS IT ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE’SMASCOT?The Marauder was selected as the mascot for Antelope Valley Collegesome time during the 1938-39 academic year. However, the exactorigins of the mascot and its development over the years have apparentlybeen lost beneath the dust of the years.“I’ll be damned if I can understand now or remember how we cameup with the name,” says Walt Primmer, a former athlete from AVC’sclass of 1940. Other college graduates from that time were equally at aloss as to the origins of the name. The earliest written mention of Marauders that can be locatedby researchers is from the 1939 Antelope Valley High School Yuccayearbook. The yearbook, which included a special section for what wasthen known as Antelope Valley Junior College, made reference to the“Maroon Marauders.” Previously, college students who shared facilitieswith the high school were simply referred to as “JCs” in the Yuccayearbooks. One thing for certain is that the Marauder image certainly fit in wellwith their namesakes - the marauding desert dwellers of Africa and Asiafrom earlier times. Some of the students from the early days of AntelopeValley College must have felt like marauders as they left their homes indistant reaches of the region to live in dorms at the college. At the time the name “Maroon Marauders” surfaced, so did a“Maroon Marauders” emblem that appeared on some sweaters orderedby the mother of student Jack Reynolds, according to Primmer. Theemblem consisted of a large circle with a scimitar - a curved saber usedmostly by Turks and Arabs - running through the center of the circle. The college’s initials of “A.V.J.C.” appeared on the scimitar. The Marauder name quite possibly served as motivation for a playwritten and produced by the college students in 1940. The play, “AKnight in Baghdad,” also known as “Harem Scarem” was described asan original musical comedy. Photos from the play show one performerin Middle Eastern dress and carrying a scimitar. Another performer wasdressed in armor, thus the play actually had a “knight, to fit in with thetitle.WHAT ARE THE SCHOOL’S COLORS? HOW DIDAVC COME BY THEM?Maroon and Silver. As discussed above, the Marauders were onceknown as “Maroon Marauders,” though through the years, “maroon” wasdropped from “marauders.” Maroon remains one of the school’s colors, along with silver. Over the years gold has been added to the colorscheme, but that has been phased out over the last 10 years. White andblack are now used to help accent the maroon and silver.OK, IF THE MARAUDER AT AVC IS FROM THEDESERT, WHY DOES THE MARAUDER MASCOTTHAT DANCES WITH THE CHEERLEADERS LOOKLIKE JACK SPARROW?A mascot was eventually developed. What is believed to be theoriginal official Marauder was depicted as a chubby-cheeked, comiccharacter with a handlebar moustache and goatee. The character wasdressed in baggy pants and pointed-toe shoes, like one would envision agenie. The Marauder also had a turban with a scimitar running throughit, in the same way an old cowboy would wear a hat with an arrow runningthrough it.Attempts had been made to upgrade and toughen the Maraudermascot image for more than 10 years before 1990. At least one studentcontest was held to develop a new mascot and various artists have lefttheir mark in coming up with new Marauders. However, some have lostsight of the original desert dweller in favor of a swashbuckling high seasmarauding pirate. Because of that, AVC’s mascot was represented firstas a duck, then a parrot and now -- the popular Jack Sparrow.WHAT IS THIS “NEW” LOGO?It’s not a logo at all. Athletic departments require different looks fordifferent purposes. The circular trademarked logo developed 15 yearsago (top left on this page) reamins the Marauder logo. But like mostathletic departments, AVChas another “identifier” -- inthis case AVC being crossedby a simitar -- which is usedto represent the departmentwhen the logo does not makegraphic sense.ARE THE WOMEN’S TEAMS CALLED“LADY MARAUDERS?”No. Marauder Athletics chooses to differentiate only by sport, notby sex. Therefore, Marauder Athletics uses the nomenclature “Marauder”before any of their sports (i.e. Marauder Football, Marauder Soccer, MarauderWomen’s Basketball). If Marauder Athletics hosts the same sportfor both sexes, the correct use is to use the genderal description before thesport (i.e. Marauder Men’s Track, Marauder Women’s Track). If only onesex is offered participation in a sport, the genderal description is dropped(i.e. Marauder Volleyball, Marauder Soccer, Marauder Baseball). AVC’slogo image is unique in that it is a silhouette, thus it can be identified witheither men or women athletic teams. The old Marauder was strictly seenas a male figure, which was acceptable 40 years ago when there were nowomen athletic teams at the college.47
