PARTING SHOT from the Editor...Course designer Jack Nicklaus welcomed the opportunity toreflect on his work at Mount Juliet when informed that it had beenvoted Ireland’s top parkland course for a third time by BACKSPIN.The late Dr. Tim MahonyJack Nicklaus has a specialaffinity with Irish golf havingdesigned two of our world classparkland courses, Mount Julietand Killeen Castle. Elsewhere in thisissue he expresses his delight with theperformance of both courses inBACKSPIN’s 3rd biennial Irish golfcourse rankings poll.Mount Juliet was his first coursedesign commission in Ireland and ithas gained a reputation as one of thefinest parkland courses in creation.Mount Juliet was unveiled in 1991and staged the Amercian Express WGCChampionship in 2002 and 2004.Nicklaus has designed manywonderful courses around the worldand he retains fond and vivid memoriesof the challenge he undertook at MountJuliet.It was soon after he celebrated hissixth Masters triumph and 18th majorvictory as a 46-year-old at Augusta in1986 that the Golden Bear set abouttransforming the late Dr. Tim Mahony’svision for Mount Juliet Estate inKilkenny into glorious reality.He recalls, "Tim was a wonderfulman who worked tirelessly to do thingsthe right way. It's difficult to believethat close to 25 years have gone bysince Tim first approached me toMOUNT JULIETdesign a golf course for him inKilkenny, in the beautiful setting thatwas and is Mount Juliet. It was a gentlyrolling piece of woodland property withmagnificent trees and, of course, theRiver Nore that runs through theproperty provided us the opportunity tocreate water features throughout thecourse."I got a great deal of pleasure inwatching the 'old' Mount Juliettransform into the modern and elegantversion it has become. And it'sgratifying to know that others haveenjoyed this transformation, be it inthe tournaments played there or asguests of the resort.Nicklaus added, “Mount Juliet wasour first work in Ireland and we havesince had the opportunity and pleasureto design Killeen Castle outsideDublin.
