Padraig Harringtonwill relish thechallenge of battlinghis way back to topform in 2012.The triple majorwinner turned 40 lastAugust and, as thisfeature highlights, age is no barrier tosuccess in golf.4 | BACKSPINAs he prepares for his first full year ontour in his 40’s and the challenge ofreviving his flagging career, PadraigHarrington is well equipped to bounce backand return to winning ways. His determination, work ethic andstrength of mind are phenomenal and if heneeds further inspiration he could reflecton many amazing achievements by otherseasoned Irish performers over the years.Christy O’Connor Snr was competitiveinto his 50’s and was just a few monthsshort of his 65th birthday when he playedall four days in the Carrolls Irish Open atPortmarnock in 1989.Des Smyth created history at theMadeira Islands Open in 2001 by becomingthe oldest player to win a European Tourevent at the age of 48 years and 34 days. And last summer, at the age of 42 yearsand 337 days, Darren Clarke became theoldest winner of The Open Championshipsince 1967, just a month after a young buckalmost half his age won the US Open atCongressional! At a time in his career when Clarkemight have been giving thought to a lesshectic schedule, suddenly he finds himselfwith opportunities galore and a whole newgame plan for the next few years. Victory inThe Open enabled Clarke to soar 68 placesin the World Rankings, from 98th to 30th,and climb 81 rungs from his end of 2010position.

If Padraigrediscovers his mojo, maintains high levelsof fitness and staysinjury free there isno reason why hecannot be a potentforce well into his40's and beyond.Harrington’s immediate focus is to gethis career back on track at the top level. He was a late bloomer, winning his firstmajor at Carnoustie in 2007 shortly beforehis 36th birthday. Within thirteen monthshe was a three-time major winner and hewas ranked 3rd in the world.Last year his tumble from that loftyperch gathered momentum at an alarmingrate. He ended the 2011 season languishingin 85th position in the World Rankings.Yet, as he seeks to arrest his slide, heremains one of the most dedicated anddetermined golfers on the planet. And if herediscovers his mojo, maintains high levelsof fitness and stays free of injury there is noreason why he cannot be a potent force wellinto his 40’s and beyond. For a classic example of longevity in golfat the top level, he only has to rewind to thefinal round of the 2008 Open at RoyalBirkdale when he partnered 53-year-oldGreg Norman. The Australian icon wasgunning for his third major title and carrieda two-shot lead into the final round, but hegot caught in the crossfire as Harringtonproduced one of the greatest last ninecharges in major championship history. On the subject of outstanding finishes inthe majors, perhaps the greatest of themall was Jack Nicklaus’s spectacular finalround charge to win his sixth MastersGreen Jacket at Augusta National in 1986at the ripe old age of 46.Left: Padraig Harrington is oneof the most successful golfers ofthe modern era with three majorchampionship victories.Photo courtesy of FTI Consultingcontinued...BACKSPIN | 5

He was beaten in a play-off for TheOpen Championship at Turnberry in 2009just prior to his 60th birthday and heproduced another fine Open display to tie22nd at Royal St. Georges last July.Just ask rising star Tom Lewis aboutTom Watson. They were paired together forthe first two rounds at last year’s Open. Itwas an incredible experience for the20-year-old English amateur, who grabbedthe headlines with an opening 65. Howeverby Sunday evening he found himselftrailing three shots behind the 61-year-oldfive-times Open champion!Indeed, a study of last year’s majorsmakes interesting reading if you feel thatgolf is a young man’s sport.Fred Couples (51) was tied 15th atAugusta...Davis Love (47) was tied 11th atCongressional...the top-25 in The Openincluded eight players in their 40’s, one inhis 50’s and one in his 60’s...and AndersHansen, Robert Karlsson, David Toms andScott Verplank - all in their 40’s - finished inthe frame at the USPGA Championship. In fact, American Steve Stricker, whoturns 45 this February, was one of the mostconsistent performers in last year’s majors. He was tied 11th at Augusta, tied 19th atCongressional and tied 12th in both TheOpen and USPGA Championship.

Equipment FocusGreat response toi20 rangePING’s innovative engineers havebeen setting the standard interms of game improvementtechnology for over fifty yearsand the new i20 range has beenreceiving excellent reviews.PING’s new i20 driver, fairway woods, hybrids and irons bring anexciting new dimension to game improvement for golfers of allstandards. This stylish new line relies on innovation and customengineering to ensure that every design attribute helps to optimiseperformance, right down to the colour of the clubs’ finish.“In the i20 series, we’ve combined workability, distance and forgivenesswith the goal to make any golfer a more versatile and complete player,”saysJohn A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “We’ve engineered the i20swith a solid feel and generous forgiveness but also a degree of workabilityfor the player who wants full command of the clubface for controllingtrajectory and shot shape. Anyone who is passionate about their game isgoing to be very confident and capable with this game-improvementtechnology.”The matt-black finish of the driver, woods, and hybrids is eye-catchingand there’s a real performance benefit. John A. Solheim explains: “Thenon-glare finish absorbs light, allowing the player to focus withoutdistraction. Our tour pros are very enthusiastic about the finish – buteven more so about the i20s’ performance. Players are able to executeany shot they want with confidence.”The 460cc driver head is highly aerodynamic to reduce drag, whichgenerates clubhead speed and ball velocity for maximising distance.“The i20 driver is incredibly long but also highly accurate,” Solheimsays. “We gave the fairway woods and hybrids the samematt finish, and their designs offer the highlaunchingforgiveness that makes them reliablefrom all turf conditions and from the tee.”Play Your Best.In the multi-metal irons, a progressive set design features long irons that areslightly larger, high launching and more forgiving. The smaller short irons featureless offset and provide exceptional control.“Distance control, a key to consistent iron play, was a priority in the irons’design,” Solheim says. “The stabilising bars and the thicker face offer great feeland ensure that golfers can hit to precise yardages. Distance control is an absolutemust for better players, but precision is going to help anyone lower their scores.”To emphasise the importance of a proper fit with any i20 product, PING offerstwo stock shaft options. In the driver, fairways, and hybrids, golfers can choosePING’s TFC 707 series, or the Project X Black from True Temper. “Both shaftsdeliver a solid, stable feel and consistent performance,” Solheim explains. “OurTFC series is slightly heavier, stiffer and generates lower launch and less spinthan Project X Black.” In the irons, PING’s CFS (Control, Feel and Stability) shaftand the TFC 169i are available.View the complete range of PING equipment, clothing and accessories at...www.ping.comBACKSPIN | 25
