Victory Over Sin 7understand, and above all, how could a merciful God expect a man to slay his ownbeloved son?Of course, you know how the story ended. Abraham passed the test; the angel ofthe Lord prevented him from stabbing his son. Notice God’s evaluation of the incident –“Now I know that you fear [reverence] God, since you have not withheld your son, your onlyson, from Me” (Genesis 22:12).How do we know Abraham loved God? Because he chose to say, “Yes” when all thepowers of hell and the passions of his soul were crying, “No!” This fierce temptation gaveAbraham a striking opportunity to prove his love for the Almighty.Let’s consider the situations mentioned earlier: What about the woman whoseemingly could not resist falling in love with another man? Or the alcoholic temptedby his friends to revert back to his old habits? Or the young man surrounded by thewrong crowd? The question was, “Why doesn’t God shield these individuals from thesecircumstances that bring such strong temptation?”The answer is simply that – because we are free-will individuals – not robots thatoperate on mechanics; or animals that live by instincts – but we were created “in theimage of God” – therefore, God allows us the luxury of difficult choices so that we canprove our love to Him, to our self, and the whole universe. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Everytemptation leaves us better or worse – neutrality is impossible! That’s way God doesn’t exterminate the devil. Admittedly, the presence ofwicked spirits in the world does make our choices more difficult. But think of whatsuch agonizing choices mean to God. We prove our love for God when we say “Yes” toHim, even when the deck appears to be stacked against us.What it boils down to is this: Do we value the pleasure of the world or those thatcome from God? The opportunities for sin that pop up around us – the sinful naturewithin us – and – the demonic forces around us – give us numerous opportunities toanswer that question.2. Transformed PassionsA second reason God does not make our choices easier is because temptation isHis character development program. Sinful habits are a millstone about our necks – a
