PROJECT SPACE: ON VIEW THROUGH MARCH 29, 2009touch sensitive:anthony campuzanoKnown for his use of found language, Philadelphia-based artistAnthony Campuzano activates texts from a variety of sources—newspaper headlines, Wikipedia entries, the covers of paperbacknovels, trivial cultural events, common clichés, pop song lyrics—indrawings that couple intense color with the tangible presence of theartist’s hand.Like his journalistic sources, Campuzano’s use of languagecondenses—he distills language into succinct phrases thatexpress a particular mood, recall a personal anecdote, orecho a national headline. What is removed textually is replacedvisually through bold color and the blocky, erratic shapes of hisletters, defying the formality of the printed page, and its capacityfor endless reproduction, with the deliberate imperfectionof the hand. Campuzano dubs his obsession with color andlanguage “abstract journalism.” As the sentences dip and dodgethrough the composition, the act of reading alternately slowsor quickens; sometimes lines are reread, sometimes skipped.Regardless of the route taken, the performance of the textbecomes central. In the Project Space, Campuzano will exhibit several new textbasedworks. Specifically for the ICA presentation, his first museumshow, he has fabricated two large freestanding bulletin boardscollaged with hand-drawn text.Anthony Campuzano (b. 1975, Philadelphia) has had solo exhibitions atFleisher/Ollman Gallery, Philadelphia, and White Columns, New York, andhas been included in group shows at Franklin Parrasch Gallery, New York;Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Bellwether Gallery, New York;and Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York. This exhibition is organized by Curatorial Assistant Kate Kraczon, and isaccompanied by a brochure publication.EXHIBITIONSOPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 6–8PMBackground: AnthonyCampuzano, DomesticAffairs/Foreign Affairs (P.Mondrian, Pier and Ocean,1915), 2008, colored pencil, ink, acrylic and graphiteon board, diptych, 20 x 30inches, each. Borrowingstrategies of destabilized perception from Op art—a traditioncondemned by formalist criticism—and adding narrative andmulticultural inflection, Odita both embraces and critiques themodernist tradition. His vast, animated expanses of fractured, rhythmic planes, equally informed by television test band patterns,African textiles, post-colonial discourse, sensory overload, and digitaltechnology, speak to a contemporary experience of dislocation anddecenteredness. Third Space, a symphony of irregularly shaped, fractured planes in 115 shades of housepaint, takes full advantage ofthe Ramp’s soaring, sloping architecture.Born in Nigeria and raised in Ohio, Odili Donald Odita (b. 1966,Enugu; lives Philadelphia and New York) has been developing hisrhythmic abstract paintings since 1999, when he was engaged, withcritic Olu Oguibe and curator Okwui Enwezor, in bringing African anddiasporic art practices to critical attention through the journal ofcontemporary African art, NKA. Odita has had numerous exhibitionsaround the world, and was included in the 52nd Venice Biennale in2007. He is associate professor of fine art at Tyler School of Art atTemple University. This exhibition is organized by Whitney Lauder Curatorial Fellow StamatinaGregory, and is accompanied by a brochure publication.ICA acknowledges primary sponsorship of the William Penn Foundation forthis project.
