IntroductionChambers ofCommerce andIndustryEuropean Chambers of Commerce and Industry are the oldest in the world, in somecases the biggest in the world – and as a group - certainly among the most diverse in theworld! While dating back to 1599 and proud to boast 400 years of support to the businesscommunity, European Chambers are today engaged in the promotion of the most moderntechnologies, the best management practices, and providing the most up-to-dateservices.EUROCHAMBRES represents national chamber associations from 44 countries that formthe European network of chambers, which represent 18,6 million enterprises of which 17million are in the EU and 99 % are SME’s.36% of our members have compulsory membership (16 countries), more than 95% of thecompanies are based in the EU and 56% of the chambers. A large percentage (96,6%) ofthe member companies is made up of small companies meaning 1-49 employees. 2,4percent of the Chambers are medium sized companies. MEMBERS OF EUROCHAMBRES – HISTORICAL & STATUTORY INFORMATIONEUROCHAMBRES WAS FOUNDED 28 FEBRUARY 1958 AS THE CONFERENCE PERMANENTE DES CHAMBRES DECOMMERCE ET D’INDUSTRIE DE LA CEE BY SIX THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE EU. THE MISSION WAS TO PROMOTETHE VIEWS OF THE CHAMBER ORGANISATIONS ON THE UNIFICATION OF NATIONAL LEGISLATION AT A EUROPEAN LEVEL,AND TO FORM OPINIONS REGARDING MODIFICATIONS TO BE MADE ON COMMERCIAL LEGISLATION. AN IMPORTANTOBJECTIVE WAS TO BRING NATIONAL COMPETENCES TOGETHER TO PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF EUROPEAN COOPERATIONOF THE HIGHEST QUALITY LEVEL.THE CONFERENCE PERMANENTE HELD ITS FIRST ASSEMBLY IN STRASBOURG ON 28 FEBRUARY 1958. IN 1961 THEFIRST TECHNICAL COMMITTEES WERE CREATED AND 4 NEW MEMBERS JOINED. A PERMANENT SECRETARIAT WAS SET UPIN 1977 (BEFOREHAND THE VARIOUS MEMBER COUNTRIES PERFORMED THE TASKS IN TURNS).EUROCHAMBRES, THE ASSOCIATION OF EUROPEAN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY HAS BEEN ANINTERNATIONAL NON PROFIT ORGANISATION IN BELGIUM (AISBL - ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONALE À BUT NON LUCRATIF)SINCE 1985.
