IntroductionChambers <strong>of</strong>Commerce <strong>and</strong>IndustryEuropean Chambers <strong>of</strong> Commerce <strong>and</strong> Industry are <strong>the</strong> oldest in <strong>the</strong> world, in somecases <strong>the</strong> biggest in <strong>the</strong> world – <strong>and</strong> as a group - certainly among <strong>the</strong> most diverse in <strong>the</strong>world! While dating back to 1599 <strong>and</strong> proud to boast 400 years <strong>of</strong> support to <strong>the</strong> businesscommunity, European Chambers are today engaged in <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most moderntechnologies, <strong>the</strong> best management practices, <strong>and</strong> providing <strong>the</strong> most up-to-dateservices.EUROCHAMBRES represents national chamber associations from 44 countries that form<strong>the</strong> European network <strong>of</strong> <strong>chambers</strong>, which represent 18,6 million enterprises <strong>of</strong> which 17million are in <strong>the</strong> EU <strong>and</strong> 99 % are SME’s.36% <strong>of</strong> our members have compulsory membership (16 countries), more than 95% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>companies are based in <strong>the</strong> EU <strong>and</strong> 56% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>chambers</strong>. A large percentage (96,6%) <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> member companies is made up <strong>of</strong> small companies meaning 1-49 employees. 2,4percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chambers are medium sized companies. THE MISSION WAS TO PROMOTETHE VIEWS OF THE CHAMBER ORGANISATIONS ON THE UNIFICATION OF NATIONAL LEGISLATION AT A EUROPEAN LEVEL,AND TO FORM OPINIONS REGARDING MODIFICATIONS TO BE MADE ON COMMERCIAL LEGISLATION. AN IMPORTANTOBJECTIVE WAS TO BRING NATIONAL COMPETENCES TOGETHER TO PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF EUROPEAN COOPERATIONOF THE HIGHEST QUALITY LEVEL.THE CONFERENCE PERMANENTE HELD ITS FIRST ASSEMBLY IN STRASBOURG ON 28 FEBRUARY 1958.
