It has beena long summer, and Beefmaster breeders everywhere are ready to make improvements to their breeding programs.The 2012 <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Revolution</strong> is a production sale representing four distinguished and individualbreeding programs. The sale offering is diverse making sure every breeding philosophy is represented, withcattle of popular, promoted, bloodlines, with show ring eye appeal, and data and performance information to berivaled by none. Each animal is classifiedaccording to BBU’s Standards of Excellence.Any bull or female in the “U” category will be sodesignated on the BBU Certificate of Breeding along withthe date and initials of the BBU field representative. I would like to thank my good friend Clark Jones and his ranch manager JustinWilliams for the use of his spectacular new sale facility. This will be the second <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Revolution</strong> sale wehave held, and we plan to make it a Beefmaster tradition. We designed this sale to offer our many friends inthe Beefmaster breed, the opportunity to market their cattle in a production sale atmosphere, along with otherbreeders who share a similar breeding philosophy.When you study the sale offering you will notice a majority of cattle all come from popular and provenclassic Beefmaster cow families. Proven genetics are an important part of the equation, but not the whole picture.Serious commercial cattleman throughout the Southeast and central states require reliable performancedata and information on the cattle they purchase. 50% of our total product is bulls, and in order to cash flow ouroperation, we need to sell a high percentage of these bulls. Ultrasound evaluation has allowed us to guage ourprogram making sure the sires we are using on our pedigreed Beefmaster cattle are truly improving our herd.Upon implementing an annual ultrasound program, we have seen a steady increase in our ultrasound results,mainly by identifying the sire who offers the most.Most performance programs tend to only focus on performance, forgetting there are other attributes requiredfor selling purebred cattle. Our program prides itself in producing show quality cattle, capable of winning futuritiesand halter shows. It is our goal to produce quality Beefmaster cattle with reliable performance to improveany program it is introduced into; that are functional, and have show ring eye appeal. All of these cattle arederived from the popular and respected cow families our breed is built upon.Weights and measures are another important tool utilized in our herd. Accurate weights, turned in at theappropriate times, are the only means our breed will ever have to offer a reliable EPD base. We depend onEPDs as much as pedigree and conformation when making mating decisions on our cattle. When mating cattlewe pay attention to all the EPD numbers. We desire cattle with low birth, high weaning, high yearling, and highmaternal traits. Not always is the perfect sire available, but we choose the sire with the most to offer, to improveour cattle.Herd health is also an important factor, our cattle are all vaccinated and wormed twice every year, using amodified live virus vaccine, and rotating spectrums of wormer. In addition to herd health, nutrition is equallyas important. Our cattle are given a high quality free choice mineral, and high quality forage.
