The group aimed to promote a coordinated approach to the relevant aspects of shipscrapping with the aim of avoiding duplication of work and overlapping of roles,responsibilities and competencies between the three organizations and identifying furtherneeds. EPA – USAEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) jointly develop guidance recommending<strong>environmental</strong> best management practices (BMPs) to be used in the preparation ofdismantling vessels. It also responds to provide national <strong>environmental</strong>ly based bestmanagement practices for the preparation of dismantling vessels.An interagency workgroup, chaired by EPA, was established to develop the BMPs. Theworkgroup included representatives from the EPA, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, MARAD, U.S.Army Corps of Engineers, <strong>National</strong> Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service.The BMPs are based on the IMO/ILO/BC conventions.8.
