TSETransmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) areinfectious diseases of the brain caused by altered prion proteins.These altered prions are extremely resistant to heatand chemicals. The diseases cause a slow degeneration ofthe central nervous system, which inevitably leads to death.Three forms of TSE are distinguished in small ruminants:classical and atypical scrapie, and BSE.Why test small ruminants for TSE?Small ruminants can be infected with BSE under natural circumstances.While scrapie is thought to be non-infectiousto humans, it is unclear whether BSE in sheep and goatscould cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, analogousto BSE in cattle. Small ruminant testing programs initiatedby the European Community to identify the incidence ofTSE in sheep and goats are ongoing. The Prionics®-CheckPrioSTRIP SR is an excellent tool to monitor the incidenceof TSE in small ruminants.
