What is <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Retention</strong>?<strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Retention</strong> is “the deliberate holding andprotecting of existing trees, shrubs, or plants on thesite according to established standards as provided inthe <strong>Cecil</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> Conservation TechnicalManual.”


What Can I do in a <strong>Forest</strong><strong>Retention</strong> Area?


You can use yourforest retention forpassive recreation!Wlki Walking trails and horsetrails are permitted in forestretention areas! Just becertain not to remove trees orput down impervious area inthe path!


FirewoodThe removal of trees forthe use of firewood ispermitted on a limited basis.You may be asked to installseedlings to make up for the treeslost for firewood purposes.Please contact the Planning andZoning Office before removing anytrees!


Wildlife management is permitted underthe guidance of a qualified manager


TreeRemovalSometimes tree removal ispermitted within forest retentionareas.Trees may be removed if it reducesthe threat of wildfire to theproperty.Trees may also be removed if theyare dead, d dying, or diseased d andpose a potential health hazard tothe forest.Timber harvesting, with anapproved plan is also permitted.Please contact Planning andZoning for details before removingany trees!

Can I put a shed in my <strong>Forest</strong><strong>Retention</strong> Area?No. Buildings are notpermitted in <strong>Retention</strong><strong>Areas</strong>. The weight of thestructure compacts thesoil thus harming theroots. Compaction cankill the crown of the treeup to ten years after thestructure has been built!


Can I use my <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Retention</strong> forpasture land?No. Grazing activitieswould be harmful to thehealth of the forest andtherefore, are notconsistent with theintent of <strong>Forest</strong><strong>Retention</strong>.


Can I hunt in my <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Retention</strong>Area?Yes! Hunting and otherpassive recreation aresuitable uses.Permanent tree stands,however, are notpermitted. No structureor signage can beattached to the treeswithin a <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Retention</strong>Area.
