Upgrading of Facilities of the<br />
DOST Research and Development<br />
Institutes in Support to Research<br />
and Development (R&D) and<br />
Scientific and Technological<br />
(S&T) Services, On-going<br />
In the pursuit of upgrading the facilities of<br />
the DOST’s research agencies, the project<br />
continuously provided advanced equipment<br />
and maintained the existing equipment and<br />
laboratories to support excellent R&D and<br />
S&T service delivery.<br />
In its third year of implementation, the<br />
project started the upgrading of the<br />
Open Source and Grid Laboratories.<br />
The Open Source Laboratory acquired<br />
software licenses that will enable software<br />
benchmarking and graphic development.<br />
Meanwhile, the Grid Laboratory obtained<br />
computing nodes, 12TB Adaptable Modular<br />
Storage, server rack, and other computing<br />
facility peripherals to enable more reliable<br />
grid computing. The laboratory also<br />
obtained pen tablet for graphic designing<br />
and marketing purposes.<br />

The project’s Year 3 is also the<br />
continuation of upgrading the Embedded<br />
and PREGINET Laboratories which started<br />
in 2008. The Embedded Laboratory<br />
acquired RFID System Development<br />
Kit and Robotic Development Kit for<br />
prototyping and embedded systems<br />
designing. It also acquired Pro-E CAD<br />
and Desk Proto Full CAM which are used<br />
for industrial designing. The additional<br />
laboratory fittings that the laboratory<br />
obtained will enable advanced testing<br />
of circuit boards and components as<br />
well as 2D/3D design analysis and<br />
modeling which are very useful for product<br />
conceptualization and realization. On the<br />
other hand, the PREGINET Laboratory<br />
received rack mounted servers to further<br />
improve its web hosting and video<br />
streaming services. Some of the procured<br />
equipment like the media converters<br />
will enhance the network’s capacity to<br />
interconnect PREGINET partners. In<br />
improving the uptime of the network in<br />
times of power outages, a big investment<br />
was made on PREGINET’s power continuity<br />
system for its Network Operations Room.<br />
The Open Source, Grid, Embedded and<br />
PREGINET Laboratories were given more<br />
books for reference and further reading<br />
which are helpful in enhancing the staff<br />
knowledge. The four laboratories together<br />
with the Research and Development<br />
(R&D) Division received additional office<br />
equipment and furniture to improve the<br />
work output and working environment.
