This disease strikes about 3,000 Americans annually, including 100-125 on college campuses, leading to 5-15 deaths amongcollege students every year. Consequences include: death (in 18-24hours), permanent brain damage, coma, hearing loss and blindness, patches on skin, vomiting, light sensitivity, stiff neck, confusion andsleepiness, nausea, lethargy, seizures. The more symptoms, the higherthe risk; seek attention immediately.Symptoms include: High fever, sever headache, rash or purple patcheson skin, vomiting, light sensitivity, stiff neck, confusion and sleepiness, nausea, lethargy, seizures. The more symptoms, the higher the risk;seek attention immediately.Diagnosis is made by a medical provider and is usually based on acombination of clinical symptoms and laboratory results from spinal fluidand blood tests. Early diagnosis and treatment can greatly improve thelikelihood of recovery.Transmission occurs when people exchange saliva (such as by kissing,or by sharing drinking containers, utensils, cigarettes, toothbrushes, etc.)or come in contact with respiratory or throat secretions.Antibiotic treatment, if received early, can save lives and chances ofrecovery are increased. Vaccinations are available and are required forcollege students under 30 years of age.Vaccinations are effective, but do not protect against all types ofmeningitis.
