All have majorimportance in the realm of opera,Verdi and Wagner having virtuallydefined that genre for the 19thcentury, and Britten revitalizing Englishopera in the 20th. Peter Van De Graaffwill devote this year’s Tuesday NightOperas to the complete stage worksof all three composers. He beginsJanuary 8 with Verdi’s seldomheardfirst opera, Oberto, Re di SanBonifacio, continuing January 15with Wagner’s Die Feen (The Fairies)and January 22 with one of Verdi’sonly two comic operas, Un Giorno diRegno. On the 29th the rarity will beBritten’s Paul Bunyan, first producedin the United States when thecomposer briefly lived in this country, then shelved for years until revived atBritain’s Aldeburgh Festival in 1974.Tuesdays, 8:00 pm22 JANUARY 2013

In the SpotlightJane GloverMusic in Chicago:Jane Glover and HaydnChicago’s Music of the Baroque oftenextends its reach into 18th-centurymusic by performing works by Haydnand Mozart, as the group did this pastfall with two Mozart symphonic worksand Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass underthe baton of Jane Glover. This workfor vocal soloists and chorus alsofeatures an orchestra with unusualscoring: trumpets, tympani, strings, and organ (no woodwind instruments). It dates from 1798 and was originallysubtitled Missa in Angustiis (Massin Time of Distress), reflecting theera of the Europe-wide NapoleonicWars. The title Lord Nelson, honoringthe British naval hero, was acquiredlater on. For MOB’s performance thequartet of soloists was led by sopranoSusanna Phillips. Writing for ChicagoClassical Review, Lawrence A Johnsonsaid: “Glover showed she has thefull measure of this work, drawinga vital, boldly projected, and richlyexpressive performance the benefitedimmensely from stellar vocalism bya first-rate lineup of soloists andthe MOB Chorus. One could hardlyimagine a more rousing sendoff toGlover’s 10th-anniversary season.”Ansermet. In the SpotlightMax NewmanA Childhood in BerlinJon Tolansky draws on theautobiography of the late MaxNewman to re-create for radio aJewish child’s experience of growingup in Berlin between 1927 and 1938.The readings relate in plain, raw, andchillingly unemotional detail how ahappy and carefree childhood wasturned upside down as friends, neighbors, scoolmates, and teachersrejected and persecuted the boy’sfamily when Nazi policies beganto take effect. Also revealed is theremarkable philosophy of those familymembers who managed to escape, including Max Newman himself. MrNewman never returned to his firstBerlin home until 2008. Tolansky hasadded music, based on Mr. Newman’smusical references throughouthis book: excerpts from classicalmasterworks, Jewish folksongs, and popular songs from the time. This documentary will be broadcastin observance of InternationalHolocaust Remembrance Day.Sunday, January 27,12:00 pmWall Street • J Strauss JrWaltzes, On the Beautiful BlueDanube, Op 314 – Vienna Phil/Zubin Mehta.
