<strong>Act</strong>ivities of <strong>Food</strong> Policy and Programs BranchMonitoring Compliance with the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Act</strong> 2001The <strong>Food</strong> Policy and Programs Branch conducts sampling surveys of various foods that are of public health concern,or to confirm compliance with the compositional and labelling requirements of the Code.The surveys completed by the branch in <strong>2009</strong>–10 include:I. Microbiological Quality of Bakery ProductsXI.Additives in Cheese ProductsComplete reports for the surveys can be found in Appendices I to XI.Past and current surveys listed above can be found on the branch website at www.health.sa.gov.<strong>au</strong>/pehs– click on ‘<strong>Food</strong>’.South Australian participation in National <strong>Food</strong> Surveys – ISC National Coordinated Survey PlanThe ISC national coordinated survey plan consists of surveys which are selected to gather information on currentnational issues of food safety and compliance. The <strong>Food</strong> Surveillance Network, consists of representatives fromF<strong>SA</strong>NZ, States and Territories. During this reporting period the department participated in surveys for BreadFortification Monitoring Program and Iodine in Beverages Survey. Sampling has been completed and analysis hascommenced. Findings are due to be presented within the next reporting period.Investigation of serious issues <strong>2009</strong>–10During the year <strong>2009</strong>–10, a number of significant issues were investigated and are summarised below. Incidents and/or issues can be notified from a variety of sources including routine food surveys conducted by the <strong>Food</strong> StandardsSurveillance Section, complaints from members of the public, reports from the food industry itself, Environmental<strong>Health</strong> Officers in local government, other regulatory agencies, or laboratory notifications from the CommunicableDisease Branch (CDCB).Incidents investigated as the result of outbreaks identified through epidemiological studies conducted by CDCB arereported separately and can be found on page 30.Investigations initiated as a result of reported illnessIn all, 26 serious incidents involving reported illness were investigated; 16 of these incidents required collaborationwith other agencies including interstate <strong>au</strong>thorities, local government and other regulatory agencies in SouthAustralia. The remaining 10 incidents were investigated, environmental assessment (including hygiene, preparationand handling practices) and microbiological swabs and sampling was conducted.
